Ed Ruth vids

Let’s have a fun thread that doesn’t get derailed. Post vids of the great Ed Ruth

Here’s one against the maddening stall-meister Nick Heflin. This will give you an appreciation for the out of bounds rule. Nick was content to lose by 7 here

That third period takedown, where Heflin bites so hard on Ed's change of direction that Ed's just suddenly behind him.

I had forgotten how much of nothing Heflin actually does.
On feet, true enough.

Once on his back, that's another story. I can't find a video or gif of this, but soccer players don't flop like Heflin did in this match.

I don't have a link to the video, but the finals match where Easy Ed destroyed Amuchamagustamasomethingorother - the Stanford coach must have yelled "Head up" 18,000 times. You might say they were afraid of the cradle.

Weird to post one where he lost, but it was definitely a bucket list match.

Also, exhibit A for my biggest beef with Freestyle's whole "technique vs control" debate. If you're gonna reward somebody 4 points, shouldn't it be super clear who it is that earned it?

Yeah, this match was extremely unsatisfying in helping determine who is the better wrestler. FS is sometimes like that. If they wrestled each other in folk around the same time I don't know who'd have won, but I at least know we'd have a better idea.

Ruth DT remains as intriguing as the Nolf Zain debate, and we'll never really know.

That was it -- thanks!

Another thing this thread reminded me of: often Ed looked like he grabbed a single with his fingertips. Just amazing.
Yeah, so many singles and doubles that start out with what looks like a few fingers around the lower thigh, which you'd think any good wrestler would easily break.

watching that makes me think that Heflin's decision to move to 197 was easy and one that took about 5 seconds to make

Man, did you guys watch the full vid of that warmup between Cael & Varner at the top of Spey's GOAT article? https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/6236561-the-top-10-ncaa-wrestlers-of-all-time

Cael has the same look--and Varner looks as surprised as many of Ruth's victims a couple times. Like "wtf, how'd he scoop that ankle, he barely even touched it?"

I also loved how Varner seemed to slow there toward the end, drifting into "we're just drilling" mode, so Cael pedals the gas just an inch, scoops two more ankles then eyeballs him, until Varner decides to put more energy into his next tie-up.

You guys remember Clay Steadman on the mic during a dual once long ago telling a story that Ed said one of his goals by the end of his career was to finally take out Casey? Anybody ever hear if he ever did?

Man, so many epic mat-room battles, those flies on the way could scalp a pretty damn penny. I wish Lorenzo were here at George Mason or even College Park, cuz I'd be a regular at those open practices. Great thread, Chickenman, love your work!

any word on Ruths little brother Edmond? it was reported at the beginning of summer that he was moving to California --Clovis I think I just read this week he is not enrolled. anyone know anything????
