I agree with some of what your saying but we differ on choice. There has never been an addict who chose to be an addict. Over 80 percent of addicted people start using before age 15. Ego and false pride along with the confidence of youth contribute more to the outcome then we want to give credit for There is no way I believe that any 15 year old ever aspired to be an addict Saying someone chooses to be an addict is like saying someone chooses to have a heart disease. It never happens that way How one lives their life can lead to problems down the road. Poor eating habits can lead to heart disease poor coping skills can lead to drug addiction The point is nobody chooses this life. I've been working in this field for over thirty years and it never gets any easier looking at someone who has lost their freedom behind bars swear to their mother they don't have a problem. Horrible disease and it's a shame based disease where most don't seek help because of that shame
Just to be clear, I never said someone chose addiction, but that they chose to try the drug, either from peer pressure, bad life decisions, etc.

I am glad that this has lead to seemingly productive conversation.

And, hats off to Wayde, he is an awesome person that does tons for our community. He is a role model for facing his addiction, helping others, and for making a fantastic cheesecake (the last is to add some levity, but I do stand by the comment!). He is someone that I proudly call a brother from another mother!!!

I can go over and over this issue, but let's just focus on the kid and getting him help needs to be job one. You make good points and to be clear there IS no right or wrong Answer here...I am in fact not only a recovering addict who has been clean 10 plus years, but drug counseling is actually what I do for a living.

That's awesome!
I recently accepted a role running a kitchen in a new rehab facility. I'm not so good at counciling, so I stick to what I am good at and nourish the body. I shut my mouth and listen to my guests food likes and dislikes. One meal at at time.😉

I always say that EVERY person involved in the healing process of addiction recovery, IS a counselor. If you work in this business, you are part of the situational solution...all the way from lead directors all the way down to night tech. You don't need a CRS cert to be helping an addict get one more day clean.

Great words for me to read.

Are you a CRS?

I don't have the case in front of me, but I know for a fact MOST (not all) counties in Pennsylvania are now turning to long care treatment, over jail time, as a useful resource in non violent, possession cases, so long as the cases are not intent to distribute larger quantities related.
