favorite wrestlers of all time

CAEL. Before him it was Gable. Nate Carr was up there too. I have enjoyed watching Nolf more than any wrestler since Cael, and I only enjoyed Cael more because he was a Cyclone.

Tommy Wildfire Rich, Ted Dibiase (pre-WWF), Junkyard Dog, George The Animal Steele, Terry Bam Bam Gordy, Terry Funk, Verne Gagne.

Possibly even a little more than a smidgeon. I was at Munich in 1972 and actually spoke with Gable about 45 minutes before he beat the Russian for the gold medal. That was after a few years in college, so it should give you an idea of my chronology.
About what I thought. Maybe 7-8 years older.

As an aside, NoVa and I talked with Gable in 2013, at the Big Ten Championships in Champaign for half an hour or so. He was leaving the next day, I believe to Geneva, Switzerland, to do his part to save wrestling as an Olympic Sport. He is one passionate guy, loved talking with him.

I won’t dispute it till we see it. But I think young David could be special. He nearly beat Frank last month.

Freestyle, yes possibly. David is Nates son, correct? Nate seemed to be best all around, Jimmys specialty was definately FS. Hard to say about Solo.

I am going pre Cael as there are a few during his time but precael I’m going with
Jeff Prescott
Sonny Abe
Kolat

The Sanderson family hasn't been too shabby, nor the Smith clan.
The Carrs may have been the greatest Pennsylvania wrestling family.

When I first moved from Wales to the good ol' USA in 1993, some of my new American friends had implored me to join the wrestling team because of my absolute disdain for basketball. Begrudgingly, I accepted their invitation to go to some place called Rec Hall to work out. I had no idea what I was in for...

I had never seen a wrestling match, and was only vaguely familiar with the sport at all (rugby sevens and football are the biggest sport in Wales). I had no skill, but I was willing to learn and after several practices at the high school gym, I felt ready to join the team at Rec hall for a Sunday workout.

I could not have been more incorrect. I got busted up almost immediately, and had no intention of going much further with this wrestling idea.

As I was contemplating what I had gotten myself into, a small Japanese man put his arm around me and he said "you can't quit, you haven't even started yet." He said that with such conviction that, even though I didn't know this guy at all, I knew I couldn't let this man down. I was determined to finish the practice...and I did! And I was damn proud to hang in there.

I was never a good wrestler, but I kept going to practices at Rec Hall with our team, always seeking out that same man for my workout partner. He could have said 'no' to the skinny Welsh kid, but he always took time out of his workout to show me moves and techniques.

For that reason, Sunny Abe will always be my favorite wrestler.
After reading this story, everyone's favorite should be Abe. This is one of the greatest wrestling stories I have ever read. Thanks Reslo!!

Second generation wont hold a candle.

Time will tell the story. I have been lucky enough to watch David practice and compete, and I will more surprised if he isn't a National Title contender than if he is next year. Speed, skill, and a great mentor growing up all in his favor. Brent Metcalf as a partner doesn't hurt him either. I hope he has a healthy career and let the chips fall where they may.

First I love when you post , always makes me feel young.
Have to say that at 16 was lucky enough to watch the 84 Olympics in LA and quickly became a fan of both Schultz's and Banach's, short time after that as I became more of a fan first PSU wrestler was Jimmy Martin (he wrestled around my time) . Too many favorites after that but always need to mention Ed Ruth.
As for Gable I have mentioned this before I think but my brother wrote for the daily collegian covering the wrestling team and he got to speak to Gable for a while and loved it. He just called him and was surprised that he one picked up the phone and then proceeded to stay on answering his questions.

Dennis Sciabica - I, like Sciabica, was a master of the Figure 4 and Crab Ride. I remember he tied Mike Frick which was instrumental in PSU tying Lehigh in 1975 (I believe).

I will stick to individuals I have seen wrestle on live television or in person.
From the Lorenzo/Fritz era:
Kerry McCoy, Sanshiro Abe, Cary Kolat, Glenn Pritzlaff (He stole my Turkey Hill ice tea at camp)
From the Troy Sunderland era:
Pat Cummins, Aaron Anspach, Phil Davis
Under Cael:
Ed Ruth, Zain Retherford, Jason Nolf

Outside of PSU:
Cael, Greg Jones, Lincoln Mcilravy, Stephen Neal, Jon Trenge

curious, why no DT?

King Kong Bundy (R.I.P.).
King Kong Bundy aka Chris Paillies (sp), went to the NJ high school state tournament but did not place. I think Bam Bam Bigelow out of Neptune took fourth. Year was around '73 or '74, maybe '75. Same era as Bruce Baumgartner who was in NJ state tournament during those years.

I sure remember Sciabica - great leg rider. Two vivid memories of him that are still clear in my mind. The first was when he threw a figure 4 and power half on Don Rohn who was an NCAA champion for Clarion. He had Rohn stretched out for almost a full period and Rohn had to use everything he had to keep from getting pinned. My second memory was watching him come out of the door of The Phyrst while competing in the highly decadent Phi Psi 500. He bent over and almost threw up on the sidewalk and then started running again.

Like AgSurfer, I remember him well too. We were at PSU during the same years. Untimely passing in 2008, rip.

I wonder if we know each other. I was at Penn State at the same time. I had attended Elizabethtown college for a few years, and after a break, I transferred to Penn State to get my engineering degree. Do you remember John Fornicola or Terry Schultz? They were my friends and workout partners.

I was lucky enough to visit with Willie Miklus who just lost his father on Monday. Willie has become one of my favorite people and a darn good wrestler to boot. It was cool to hear him talking about the positive outreach from current and past opponents. He told me Matt McMcutcheon is one of his favorite people he has ever met in the sport. Please keep Willie in your thoughts and prayers these coming weeks as he is out there with a very heavy heart.

Jim Martin, for introducing me to “The PSU” brand of wrestling.

Kolat, for taking dominance to new heights.

McIlravy, I was kind of scared of him but he was a great talent.

McCoy, for his attitude and how he made the weight class look slow and without skill.

Cael

Then, you know, the gang. Picking one seems like picking a favorite child or single malt or something.

Robbie Meloy for pinning his opponent during Iowa and Gable's first loss in HCA wrestling for PSU. Martin and Meloy have winning records vs. Iowa wrestlers, not bad for a couple of Danville wrestlers.

Know a Tom Fornicola locally, but don't recall John, and don't remember the name Terry Schultz. See they're both from Bellefonte originally, and it appears we have some common friends. As information, graduated '78 in engineering too, the IE variety.

I worked with Tom at my last job great guy and Denny got me started as he took me to many psu wrestling matches as a kid. he used to to work with my father at for senator cormans office

PSU Jason Nolf
Wrestler I saw in high school, Chris Taylor. I remember him just laying on a guy and the guy puked because he couldn't breath. Being a little kid that was cool.

I loved Nolfs interview when he defended Berger. After winning his third title
