First Announced Match of the next NLWC Event

Also on Rokfin on 10/17.

Pittsburgh — October 11, 2020 — Three dozen of the best wrestlers in Pennsylvania will battle it out in True Power, presented by PA Power Wrestling, on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The dual meet-style event pits Team Green against Team Black and includes matches featuring junior high, high school and post-graduate level wrestlers with 15 boys’ bouts, two girls’ events and one men’s match on the card. There are 15 folkstyle and three freestyle matches scheduled. True Power will be held in Tyrone but, due to COVID-19 restrictions, it is not open to the public. The only way to catch all of the action is to stream it via the Rokfin platform.

“We’re very excited about this event, which we believe will come to be a staple on the Pennsylvania wrestling calendar,” said PA Power founder Jeff Upson. “The pandemic has limited what the wrestling community can do, given social distancing requirements and crowd-size limitations. We wanted to put on an event that will make the safety of everyone involved an absolute necessity but also give competitors and fans the high-level wrestling that they have been craving. We are confident that True Power will do exactly that.”

The main event is a senior-level freestyle match between Brock Zacherl and Kyle Shoop, a pair of Pennsylvania high school standouts who went on to become Division I All-Americans for Keystone State colleges.

Zacherl was a 2014 state champion at Brookville before moving on to Clarion University, where he went 114-17. He was a four-time NCAA qualifier and was named a second-team All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association after this year’s event was canceled. He is an accomplished freestyle wrestler, having won the Junior World Team Trials in 2015.

“Wrestling in this event is a new start for me,” Zacherl said. “I love wrestling period but freestyle wrestling has always been what I lived for, and this event marks my new beginning there.”

Zacherl, who is now a member of the Clarion coaching staff, has been looking for an opportunity to make a name for himself in international wrestling.

“I’m always excited to compete to show the world how great Clarion University is and what we can do here,” he said. “I love going out and letting it fly – no care in the world about the scoreboard just constant wrestling. When the dust settles, I’ll be on top and have made a lot of mistakes that myself and the rest of the Clarion staff can build on.”

Shoop was a three-time state medalist at Boiling Springs High School and a four-time NCAA qualifier for Lock Haven. He placed seventh at the 2019 NCAA tournament in Pittsburgh and went 131-46 in his career, good for the second-most wins in the history of the long and storied Bald Eagles program.

“Wrestling in this PA Power Wrestling event is a very unique and special opportunity for me,” Shoop said. “After not being able to compete at the NCAA tournament in March, I have waited for a chance to compete. I am thankful that I have a chance to compete against one of the best and represent the Mat Town Wrestling Club! Go Team Green.”

In addition to the All-Americans, the card is scheduled to feature 11 state champions and dozens of state medalists. Coverage starts with weigh-ins at 4 PM and competition will start at 6 PM. Below is the full line-up of matches taking place.

Any word on why Nick Lee isn't wrestling? Is he the person they were talking about re: COVID contact tracing, and having to reshuffle the lineup?

Also, should be nice to see Kerk against a guy who was ranked #8 in the country last year. He beat Jordan Wood last season.

Not sure about Nick Lee. As to Kerk Thomas is not as accomplished as Hemida who Kerk destroyed.

Thomas was a NAIA champ but hasn't really stunned anyone since then except nevils in the clarion open.

Thomas will be an interesting match if for nothing else than his matches typically have more points scored than a traditional HWT. He has pinned Stencil from CMU and lost close to White from OKST in 2019. He isn't a top tier HWT in the Parris, Steveson world but was seeded 7th heading into NCAAs last year.

unfortunately, the match will be called once kerk has a 10 point lead, likely at 10-0.

As a senior he was seeded 7th, but Kerk already teched Hermida, a 2x AA. Just saying.

Verk and terell going.. Could it carry weight into "the season" if 1 wins and the other doesn't??

I'm excited to see Brooks vs Pfarr, to see if Aaron is truly approaching top tier FS. I do not take a "he's jumped levels" from Cael lightly.

Starocci, because I want to see what he's been up to since February 1st at the Edinboro Open. Kerkvliet, for the same.

Call me weird, but the Nolf/Jenkins match doesn't do much for me; Nolf should smash him. Same with Bekzod vs Nestor Taffur; Bekzod is a two-time Worlds medalist. Dr. Valencia should handle Vayle-Rae Baker, too.

The most intriguing match to me, by far, is Beau Bartlett vs Bryce Meredith. Talk about getting thrown into the lions den.

This kid is going to go down as one of the greats when it's all said and done. Can't wait to see him wrestle

This. If he can get on AB's level in terms of mat/body awareness and technical savvy (from neutral), that's going to make a hell of a nasty start to the back half of the lineup. I've been saying this to anyone who will listen: I expect both of them to be in the NCAA finals for the next several years. Carter's got the makings of a Zain when it comes to brute force on top.

Remember, for those yet to sign up, do so through the NLWC, at https://rokfin.com/NLWC?content=NEW. The NLWC benefits FAR more than a generic Rokfin join.

I recognize that overall this is a terrific card and everyone is excited, though don't be surprised with several changes.

The NLWC hopes to build momentum with these events, so hopefully more are signed up this week than watched the first event. Don't be surprised with several more NLWC events this year following this one. :)
