Football GAMEDAY THREAD: Penn State versus Oregon in 2024 B1G Championship

He couldn't get there. Whether it's his speed, the CBs hand on his neck line, or Allar a touch too far, Wallace couldn't get there. He tried to high point it, but out of his reach.

It is what it is. We played better today than vs OSU. That's a positive going into the playoff.
I'm harsher than that. Wallace has to be better. He didn't fight for the ball enough. He caused a pick against OSU too.

The game’s biggest play was the INT returned to the 1-yard line.
That wasn’t on Franklin.
It wasn’t on the ref’s.
Not really on Allar.
Just a bit of miscommunication between QB and receiver, and the DB made the play.

lol--that's your complaint--the threw a 50/50 ball--his WR has to make a play
You all loved Trace for doing that
Trace and his WRs were known for attempting 50/50 balls frequently.
When has this team ever had a reputation for the 50/50 ball?

Every single one of CJF’s bad habits returned in the second half. It’s like a compulsion with him, just has to waste timeouts, call unnecessarily risky playcalls, and psyche the whole team out.
He cannot control his emotions in big games. He panics and tries to do something heroic instead of just staying calm and making the sensible decision.

It wasn't double coverage. They even said "one on one"...the safety was a non factor

The corner could ride Wallace long and on the sideline because he had safety help inside. I've been told all season long Allar has been taught to throw the long ball short.

If the defense and Allar’s two bad decisions are all CJF, then fine. Otherwise dumb take.
If we get even a few of blatant holds, the push off on TE on 4th down, or the illegal lineman downfield then Oregon perhaps does not get two TDs. Allar threw a dart being dragged by LB to keep us in it. We had a 2nd and 1/2 foot, plenty of time and TOs..and CJF dials a pass?? Cmon. That was biggest reason we lost. We had it, just keep marching. Give Nick and Tron the damn ball

But if they would have made it, then they would have been kicking an extra point for the win. After the fact coaching is so easy.
Penn State's two-point conversion success rate is 0.343. Most college teams are successful on two-point conversions about 45–50% of the time.

It was a horrible decision.

Why try to score fast? Oregon just gonna come down for a fg.
Going for a bomb on 2nd and 1 is perfectly fine. Happens all the time, hoping you catch them preoccupied stopping you from getting an easy 1st down … but in this particular case you’d have to expect they’re more likely to not be that worried about a short gainer, conceding the 1st to prevent a TD opportunity and you also don’t take the shot if it’s not there … and you have to make sure you throw it where only your WR can get it. That’s why those are usually middle of the field, where you have more options where to put the ball.

We should have run it right at them. They didn't run blitz.

Just don’t understand why you call that play. I get people saying Drew had to throw it because he’s told to but WHY call that play and put him in that position (although I think he should be able to look at that situation and understand it’s not a good throw to make). I just don’t understand that play call. Coaches are meant to put their players in a position to succeed and that play was the opposite of that. 2nd n 1 and you call that play? Coaches should be the first to answer that. Big games do seem to spook Franklin especially as the game winds down.

If we score and don't convert the 2 we need time
Not kicking the XP earlier killed us

Can't beat a very good Oregon team, the refs and ourselves all in one game. In spite of all of that, these guys only lost by a score.

If you're a Penn State fan you can take this loss one of two ways.

Way 1) Penn State can't still win the big games, there's no hope in the playoffs

Way 2) Penn State went toe-to-toe with perhaps the national championship favorite and if the offense shows up like they did tonight, they can beat anyone.

Interested to see how the reaction is split.

Nope not even close. I call pass there as well on second and a foot. If nothing is there, throw it away and then pick up the first down. But I don’t think my QB throws to a covered receiver who has safety help. Especially when shorter throws were available.

Combination of both. Still concerns over Franklin and the defense. Feel better about the offense and we know we can score if we need to

If it's played outdoors on grass.
Nah. I mean, yeah … but indoors on turf, too. We shot ourselves in the foot numerous times. Calls that didn’t go our way that should have, to boot. Our RBs loved the turf. I think Allar would be more settled and not make the 2-3 errors he made. We’d be fine on turf.

It's crazy that people are afraid to criticize Drew for throwing that up for grabs. He wasn't told to throw the ball. He has a choice. Franklin has pounded into his head for the last 3 years to protect the ball. If he's not open don't throw it. Just because they run the play doesn't mean he has to throw the ball.

Oregon is the better team, but not by a large margin. That game was winnable, but the coaches didn’t put them in the best position to win. Kids played very gutsy. Give them a ton of credit.

It wasn't designed to go inside and Wallace had a shot to play the ball.

The ball should have been closer to the sideline. Right shoulder instead of left. Incomplete pass would have been fine. A back shoulder or a yard or too shorter would have likely drawn DPI.
