Iowa at Nebraska: Who ya got?

it’s almost like they’re better when they don’t feel like they’ve got to play to their crowd and engage in weird faux tough guy crap. They just went out there and wrestled hard.
Iowa is good when they are Iowa. Unfortunately they have not been Iowa save for one year in the last 11.

Congrats to Iowa tonight. The matches were competitive for the most part. After Teske lost....I thought Nebraska was in the driver's seat. Iowa took it back. They earned it. Not upset that Glazier won. Hard working, Bleeds Iowa and definitely contributed to the fact that we will not have to watch the AJ show(off) this year. I have no issues if he finishes 2nd this year.
He damn well might 😂

I agree. I haven't seen a lot of Nebraska this year, but I remembered them being really tough on top, and they didn't seem to ride well at all last night. Iowa wrestled tough and smart. Good on Glazier... Much like Iowa St. I think Nebraska let an opportunity slip away last night...

He looked like a completely different wrestler. It's crazy...
I know that Manning is an accomplished Big Ten coach, but, his best wrestlers have almost always suffered from a lack of consistency. His own temperament is kinda all over the place. Clearly Nebraska is proud of their program, but, in no way is the coaching “championship caliber”. I’d call him the James Franklin of College wrestling coaches.

Yep seems like Iowa has figured out how to get all their guys to peak at once.. next step is to figure it out in march and not January
Iowa did wrestle well last night, was a bit surprised nebraska let them hang around in matches that newbie was far superior in.

Congrats Hawkeye fans. A well earned victory.
Yeah. Considering the hot mess that’s been
Slathered all over Iowa City … I’d say that TnT had their team prepared. I would add that Tom offered up enough strange faces that it makes me wonder if he’s hearing some
Odd music coming out of the AD’d office.

Just a much louder and annoying version.

3-3 after 133

Gotta wonder why Van Dee wouldn’t shoot there over last 20ish seconds. No lose scenario. Get TD and win by major. Get taken down and win by DEC. Puzzling.
I'm sure he thought about it but probably ran out of gas. Good win for the young man.

Iowa impressed, even at 149. Franek will be a tough out for Levi, maybe even a loss, but it’ll be good to meet him twice before NCAAs. First time seeing Caliendo has me thinking he’ll be trouble for Messenbrink. Just seems so much bigger than Mitchell, and surprisingly quick. Good for Glazier. Allred had nothing for the kid with the “you’ll see” motivation (AJ who?). I’ll likely root for him in all March matches against non-Lions. Feb 9 will be a dogfight, at least through 165. Can’t wait.

I would say the first half of the lineup for Iowa seemed to be in better shape/conditioned. Robb died. Holy smokes all these 6 year guys - 25-26 year olds... Woods graduated before he left Stanford? Also - they listed 125lb undefeated wrestlers and didn't include ours (just he American U kid)
Ubet. I caught that too about the unbeatens at 125. Braeden Davis not being mentioned tells me announcer assuming psu still really struggling at this weight. Shame on him for not doing his homework. Lol. Can't wait to see Davis wrestle again. Hopefully he can stir some attention.

Things will be different when JB takes over within the next 2 years.

Is Davis ranked at all? I was pretty sure they said the only undefeated ranked wrestler was the American guy.

Yes, he did qualify it by saying "the only undefeated 125-pound wrestler in the top 30." Davis is not there -- yet.

Just watched the UNI-Nebraska dual for some perspective. Here are my thoughts on both duals.

125. Smith needed SV to win against UNI then Ayala was clearly the better wrestler last night. There are still about 20 guys who could win/AA this year given how crazy it’s been, but Ayala is near the top of the list. Smith is lower on the list, too, as is Davis. Braeden will get his chance to move up against Ayala and hopefully DeAugustino next week, but Ayala looks really good.

133. Teske stinks. Van Dee is NQ caliber at best. Neither of these guys are a threat to Nagao.

141. Woods is rightfully #1. I still believe in my heart that Bartlett will beat him at nationals, but he’s really good. Hardy is a little off. He lost late to Happel then was beaten soundly by Woods. He’ll be there at nationals, but it's going to be an uphill battle to AA.

149. Lovett is also rightfully #1. He had similar results against Rathjen and UNI’s pigeon, but they were very different matches. Lovett was on cruise control against UNI, working on painful half nelson and cradle pinning combinations while building up 5 mins + of riding time. He left himself one last chance to get a major with a TD in short time, but couldn’t get it. He could have tech’d that guy playing catch and release but didn’t. Rathjen’s match score reflected the actual difference between the two. Rathjen is a tough out. His match vs Kasak is going to be a great one.

157. Kudos to Franek for finding a way to win. That was a really fun match. Robb doesn’t quite look back to 100% yet. He gassed vs both Franek and Downey and lost both matches. Levi hasn’t been as dominant as we’d hoped so far. But these guys are going to be tough for him. His match vs Franek is also one I’m really looking forward to.

165. Caliendo is a beast. He’ll be an AA for sure in the toughest and deepest class in the country. MM is next level, but he’s going to need to be careful not to get caught by Caliendo’s power. I’m never betting against MM though. Taylor is a good young wrestler but probably a year or two from being an AA threat. He needs to get stronger.

174. Bubba Wilson is what he is - an inconsistent but fun to watch NQ. PK is what he is, too - an AA contender but not sure thing. These guys are both fish food for Starocci, although I still think we’ll see Gabe vs Starocci.

184. Pinto ducked Keck vs UNI. He obviously looked good against a JV 165, but whatever. Keck is the favorite in this class, but it’s winnable for others, too. If Riggins is the 184 vs Penn State, Truax will win easily. Truax vs Pinto is an interesting matchup to see how people line up behind Keck.

197. Allred, WTF? He looks like a shadow of himself. Glazier is a battler, and wrestled a great match against Allred, but he’s going to get tech’d vs Brooks.

HWT. Disappointing by Hutmacher. Hill is a JAG. I’m guessing we see Kueter by then. No matter, Kerk is the favorite in this class for a reason.

This - a variant of ISUs choke job. Iowa circles the wagons very well given fairly even odds

Once Davis is officially out of redshirt he will get a ranking. I know it sounds dumb, but that's how they're doing the rankings lately.

I’m hoping we see a better version of Haines this weekend. The wrestling we’ve seen from him recently isn’t beating Franek or Robb.

What was Kennedy coming out of hs? Was he a top 5 recruit?
Out of curiosity, did a quick internet search. When Kennedy committed to Iowa, he was ranked as follows (all P4P or "big board").

Intermat - #4
Open Mat - #5
Flo - #8

Didn't bother to check the final (post-season) rankings, but don't think that Kennedy's final rankings changed much.

I only asked because he was one of quite a few that Hawk fans said would be a multi time champ. Warner was one, Marinelli one, Kem was another, Assad was suppose to be multi time AA if not champ, I'm sorry, I still don't see Brands as some whiz at developing kids like others do...

Rational Hawk fans don’t either. The proof is in the results and they are not there.

Shooting for shooting sake when up 10-4 is puzzling, If he didn't have look , then what does it accomplish. Teske not exactly a pushover. (Yes, I'm a friend of Van Dee)

everyone seems so shocked at how good Iowa looked last night. Dont they always peak right around this time?
Every year I watch Hawk fans giddy with excite at how great their team is...

And every year I sit around and wait for them to start putting down their wrestlers and calling for Tom's head.

Peyton Robb looked great this year in the Fall so I don't think the leg infection is a factor. He hasn't looked his best the last 2 weeks and who knows what the reason is but he'll be a tough out by March again. Franek is what he is, a strong as a horse, positionally perfect defensive wrestler.

Glazier is the biggest surprise of the year and he's impressing. I do think Silas Allred is somewhat overrated because he was Max's kryptonite but there is no denying he is a fantastic neutral wrestler with major bottom deficiencies and Glazier out neutraled him so don't take anything away from him there. Definitely think he is an AA candidate. 197 is pretty tough this year with:

AB
Hidlay
Buchanan
Sloan
Elam

I think he is the same level as Smith, Poznanski, Stout, DePrez, Cardenas types which is very impressive.

Unless I interpreted wrong, Wrestlestat has Davis ranked 15th from a January 8 listing at 9-0?
It was the comment on the broadcast about the top 33 and only 1 undefeated wrestler at 125. Don’t think Davis was being ranked because they weren’t sure if he was coming out of Redshirt.

This has Iowa wrestler gets R12 finish written all over it unless someone get upset early and Glazier 1-2.
