IOWA @ ISU - 3:00 PM ET

Caught on late so only watched from Brands on, but that Brands Colbray match is worth catching and demonstrated that Brands will be a force. Not sure that the TD they gave him on replay was actually a TD but it's not like Colbray came any closer. Colbray only need to ride for 15 more seconds in the third and he'd have gotten the win in regulation.

I liked in OT brands stood center circle and just held position. Didnt run. Didnt skate. Just like bring it on.

I really think he will be a force for 4 years. It will be fun watching the dynamic play out between the family.

Shame for iowa that they didnt grey shirt him last year and RS him this year. That said maybe they knew they would need him this year.

As time was expiring and he was trying to get one last TD, he did a sort of jump over & spin to squat on his opponent (who was on all fours at that time). Certainly an awkward way to secure a takedown (hands-free) . . . his opponent took it as a slight and stood up to buck ADS off of him. Official intervened, leading both guys to the middle by the arm for handshake. He held ADS' arm, who then tried to push the officials grasp away. Looked like a warning was signaled.
Was at the meet and they announcesd 1 point team deduction. At least that's what was announced.

PSU vs. Iowa dual:

125-Strong Iowa
133-Iowa
141-Strong PSU
149-Iowa
157-Iowa
165-Toss-up
174-Toss-up
184-PSU if Rasheed is healthy
197-Iowa
Hwt.-Strong PSU

Need to win the toss-ups and break through at weights like 133, 157 or 197.

What I don't understand is why the ref didn't call the locked hands when it supposedly happened. Instead he waits until after Degan scored 4 points and then decides to call a penally. That's the kind of stuff that makes you call into question the integrity of the ref.

I thought the locked hands was after the backpoints.

Thanks -- I initially thought that was the case, but then didn't think the posted match score reflected it. I must have been bad on my math.

Hall is better than Kemerer. Kemerer plays right into his strengths

Kemerer, while very good, doesn't seem to be as technically sound as Hall. He'll need quick, crisp, airtight technique to secure takedowns on Hall -- from what I've seen of him the past 2 weeks, he is not there yet. Takes way too much time to manufacture the leverage he needs to finish off those low singles. Hall will capitalize on that if Kemerer tries it.

Some fun matches in this dual and yes, Iowa is a force this year! Few notes...

-Talk crap all we want, but they do seem to do well with those lightweights in the Iowa room!
-I wasn’t surprised that Carr won today, but I was surprised to see him break a tie late in the third to take it - lots of composure for the freshman!
-I’ve watched Brands last two matches now and I can’t help but like the guy, he is a tough dude and doesn’t seem like he’ll back down from anyone! He’s fun to watch!
-Iowa has some depth - Happel looked pretty good today and it looks like Wilke is now 2nd string. Add Cashman, Teasdale, and some others I’m sure, they seam to even be ok if they get dinged up here or there.

Sooo many variables... Shak, Conel, Beard, Berge, ADDS, Leavesdale, Brands. Skin checks, long bus rides, duckings, psycho coaches, average officials to be had, stall calls,forfeits...etc etc. Cant wait

More like:
25 Strong Iowa
33 Iowa
41 Strong PSU
49 Strong Iowa
57 Toss-up (Berge)
65 Toss-up (though I like Cenzo)
74 PSU
84 Strong PSU
98 Toss-up (Beard)
HW Strong PSU
That's 4 PSU, 3 Iowa, 3 toss-ups
It's gonna be FUN!

Feel bad for Degan there. Thought he was the better man today. Without the locked hands call he wins going away
Huh? Without the locked hands he gives up that reversal and is down 5-2 without riding time, meaning he would need an escape and takedown just to force OT. The only reason he was able to take Lugo to his back was because he did something illegal lol.

Ridiculous. Main ref missed it, but the assistant signaled for it immediately and informed the main ref when the action stopped. Then they went back and looked at it to make sure. That situation was handled perfectly.

The entire time Lugo was on his back I was rooting for him to call the fall because I knew it would get overturned and I wanted to see the air get sucked out of that arena. Easy, easy call and well done by the assistant.

Carr-Young lived up to its billing. Some really good TD defense by Young most of the match, but Carr got him at the end, including a cradle-lock and turn (broken as soon as back exposure started) for a 2-count as time was nearing expiration. Combined with a stall call, it ended up being a 5-pt move to break the 1-1 tie late.
Don't forget about Carr's great early defense. Young was in deep twice in the first and Carr defended both times. Match shifted in the second. If Young converts there, and he's usually automatic, completely different match.

Very savvy wrestling from Carr. He's for real. I think that could realistically be an NCAA final the next 2 years.

Pretty sure it was the mat judge who caught and called the locked hands. The replay only verified it and probably allowed them to accurately reset the clock. The mat judge should have clearly communicated with the mat official that he had a top man "locked hands" and when Lugo went to his back the match should have been stopped.

I know I am known for my positive Hawkeye bias, but I certainly thought Brands had the takedown. I don't think anybody should be surprised at a Brands winning by outtoughing his competition.

That is NOT what happened. Assistant ref signaled locked hands AFTER Lugo got off his back. Just rewatched it to confirm that is what happened.

My main takeaway from this dual is that Iowa is going to be tough to beat both in the dual and at BIGs and NCAAs. Brands looks to be a huge upgrade from Wilcke.

I'm just not as concerned as some of you.

Nice win by Brands, but at the same time it was one match and he looked limited athletically. That will hold him back against a lot of the better guys at the weight later in the season when everyone is in shape. Shak may very well roll him up.

Degan was just screwed over the by the ref. As NoVa said above, they pulled that call out of their a$$ after Lugo was put on his back. He is a marginal AA at best.

The so called pinning machine at heavy decisioned a marginal wrestler. Warner is good, not great. 141 is a hole. Young is topped out, will continue to look slow against the better guys and I'd be very surprised if he is beating a healthy Deakin this year.

Finally Spencer Lee is a fantastic talent, but he's back to wearing the leg brace and I'm just not sure how long he can continue to wrestle at such a high level with his continued injuries. Why he isn't taking a Olympic Redshirt this year is beyond me. I will be shocked and in awe if he can win Nationals and the Olympic spot this year.

In summary I'm not worried, its more of the same at Iowa. They out condition people early on and then are left scratching their heads when the overtraining results in losses at Nationals.

Meanwhile our coaches have a plan.

Lets see how everyone is wrestling in mid-January. Right now the Haws are the favorite just because Berge and Shak have yet to wrestle this season.

Degan/Lugo was terrible. Lugo should have been awarded the reversal. The reversal had already happened before Degan locked his hands and flipped Lugo. That sequence should have went r2 for Lugo and r2 plus 4nf for Degan. This doesn't include the takedown at the end they didn't give Degan. Lugo was gifted that match.
Brands is who he is. Strong and solid. Ethan Lofthouse/Sam Brooks type. Limited athletically but will always be a grinder with great conditioning.
