Iowa news - 2024-25

I am having trouble remembering who and what, but someone here came up with a really good variation of WildTurk last year.

I think it may have been @Used2BEerie, @Creek Side, or @82bordeaux . . . and was
iit “WildTuck”?
@hlstone was the genius.

@hlstone was the genius.

Finally, someone appreciates my genius 🙂

3 Questions:

(1) Lone Wolfie is now a mod?

(2) What brain wizard thought he had the temperament for that kind of job?

(3) Ok, which one of you knuckleheads is “Darkbootyblaster”, laughing at posts over there? 🤣
I am ashamed to admit that it is not an alt account of mine.

Are you saying your constitutional right to free speech was violated?
Yes, yes that is it! I did specialize in long drawn out explanations or random stories as part of my repertoire. Try to sprinkle around enough sugar just to make sure you keep some people happy and every now and then let one slip in there.

I often will voice text, and it somehow put down Wong instead of Long. Which made me think of Long duck dong. So maybe if I get an Oregon duck avatar and that new screen name Long duck dong, I'll be able to get back in action.

Nobody would be denying anyone access to the Hawk web site. (unless Turk steps in and blocks someone) We would be merely adding informative content to the Hawk web site. It could also be argued that we would be providing them with a more realistic framework to view the potential for the Hawk wrestling program.
According to the movie unstoppable Coach Tom Brandt said in Iowa if you're in second place you're in last place in an interview prior to the finals match against Robles.

So if they finish more than second individually or as a team how far below last is that?

The legitimate possibility PSU smokes them 40-0 in a head-to-head battle I believe is much more unsettling for them then knowing another 100 point beat down at nationals is highly likely.

Remember, they have been repeatedly reassured by their chief recruiter and benefactor the field is now level. A level playing field with the superior coaching skills of the Brands boys and superior wrestling knowledge of the Iowa Hawkeye wrestling fans (ie. heeeessss staaaalllllinnnnn) they should be winning not wishing upon a star to maybe win 1 or 2 of 10 in a match and come closer than a 100 points in the championship tournament. It just seems unfair and their feelings are probably a bit brittle.

Good Lord, I love Iowa Hawkeye wrestling fans. Their bitterness and anger over PSU's wrestling success makes the shear joy of watching PSU be as great as they are even sweeter.
I lived there during the Gable days , 85-88. They remind me of our local Walmart ND fans. It's quite the show .

Do you know that they wave to kids in the Hospital and eat ice cream cones at Carvel Ice Cream Cake Arena?

Somehow something I said got me nuked over there, I guess they're getting a little bit sensitive. I thought I was fairly polite but still pretty clear how Penn State is so much better? I don't know did I make a mistake somewhere?

Previous things that I said over there didn't get me banned, one was out Penn State was more like the SEC in football than Salem Alabama. Meaning they've won more titles in the same period than the SEC has in football. That didn't go over well but only one or two people made a nice comment about it.

Now I have lived in Iowa for a few years and I had my first job out of college and I like the area so I like to toss it out there from time to time however they seem to get mad when you disagree with them on anything. It seems they're still going back to that slush fu d thing and Kale or Carl or whatever.

They still seem quite sensitive . I belong to the BEG wrestling group on Facebook and one of their moderators there who is an Iowa fan said he works there and he doesn't think he did anything out of line, but he said they are getting a little sensitive lately.
Those 60,000 nerve endings, the old moderator Mike Z referred to, would be my guess.

Bruh, Spencer became one of the greatest Hawkeye of all time.. what u talkin bout.. without him Iowa wins 0 titles in the Cael era, he probably woulda helped them win 2 if no covid year, what u talkin bout not earth shattering… is only being a 4x champ considered earth shattering?

I’d argue he did something more important, not only did he win 3 but he had a lot of PA and young guns guys followed him.. Kemdawg, Murin, Young etc.. witout Spencer going to Iowa not all of them probably woulda followed..

Ur right PSU will be fine without Basset.. There’s already heavy future logjams..Duke, Blaze, etc etc all got similar or debatable better accolades..

The big diff with Basset then other blue chippers is, like Spencer, Basset got the aura that will make recruits follow him.. but then again doesn’t sound like u think too highly of Spencer’s career.. “became a decent competitor but nothing earth shattering.” But other programs would love to get a recruit of Spencer’s impact and achievements.
You're making an assumption that it was Spencer who motivated those guys to choose Iowa. Don't forget that there was/is a former Hawk who runs a good wrestling club in Western PA who had a lot of influence on the guys that he coached.

And like I pointed out, (along with GP above) anything that happened to Iowa while Spencer was there was just a momentary blip on the timeline. Now Iowa is following the same trend as the Romans and British - they have to rely on mercenaries to be effective.

BTW - I/we are derailing this thread a bit. It's supposed to be about Bassett. We should probably move this discussion to an Iowa thread.

Desanto said in an interview Spencer was a big reason for him transferring to Iowa..

This thread is about Basset.. speculating where he might go.. and if he ends up at Iowa then Spencer mighta played a non earth shaking influence.. guess ur only a earth shaking wrestler if u win 4+ titles. Zain, Nickal, Nolf etc yeah 3x only pshhhh, and Taylor only wit his 2 titles yeah pshhh child’s play.

I agree Spencer had an impact on Iowa for sure. But I'm pretty sure you've got the recruiting order wrong. I believe both Kem and Young were signed in earlier classes. Murin the same year as Lee. If anything, Lee followed at least Kem and Young.

You have some good points. Just to clarify, @PSUAllTheWay is correct. Kem was 2 years ahead, Young a year ahead and Murin was in the same class as Lee.

Commitment dates:
Young 9/19/2014 (class of 2016)
Kemerer 10/8/2014 (2015)
Lee 4/20/2016 (2017)
Murin 8/27/2016 (2017)

There weren't any PA coattails, either. DeSanto (not Young Guns) as a transfer nobody else wanted. Teasdale as a transfer who wore out his welcome before 1st semester at PSU. Kolby Franklin in 2022. That's the full list of PA wrestlers who went to Iowa after Murin. Iowa couldn't even land Francis Duggan after he trained with Young Guns and then moved to Iowa City.

Murin + Franklin + 2 misfit transfers are not coattails. Even Tan Tom wouldn't brag about that haul.

Put another way: if Brands couldn't land those guys or similar without Lee ...

The dude they got to play Tom Brands… let’s just say he didn’t look like someone Brands would pick to play him.
I posted something on another thread once, but check out a more recent photo of Michael C Hall who played Dexter. There’s definitely a resemblance to Brands.

I would have sworn Dexter was taller than 4' 11".
I know you’re joking but Brands isn’t a midget. He was standing right next to me for a few minutes at the US Men’s Open a few years ago in LV and I would put him at least at 5’ 7” and maybe a little more.

FWIW google says he's 5'5"/165cm. One source is linked below. Not sure why, but the same site says Terry is only 162cm (~5"4"). Maybe that's why Tom is head coach and Terry is ... crazy?

Maybe he was wearing lifts in his shoes, but he was standing right next to me and he definitely looked taller than 5’5”

@johnstownsteel - maybe you can request that your friends on GIA settle this issue. 😆

DeSanto is 5’5” and he’s taller than T&T. I’m down to 5’8” and was a good 4” taller than Tom when I was on the floor at Northwestern a couple years back.

I think I caught a glimpse of you two entering the arena on that broadcast
