Iowa news - 2024-25

Do you think Ohio State would swap Ryan for Brands? Didn't think so.
Of course not.

But to be equally silly: when the Hall of Fame votes on Brands, are they gonna say "sorry but you had a really crappy one year at Virginia Tech"?

Tom is already in. Tom was in before the debacle at VT. So is Jim Zalesky.

to win iowa now needs 9 more Bassets or for Bassett to wrestle every weight!
Someone mentioned this earlier that psu has “10 starting bassets” and Iowa only had “1”… lol

-Would Angelo count as a “Basset”?
-Ppl laughed when I suggested Arnold as a potential “Basset”. He will be a finalist contender for the next 3 years at 174
- Ayala count as a “Basset”? Only 2 years left tho
- hwt will really clear out for Kueter next year
- I guess Ludington/Deluca would be “basset lite”
- #1 recruit Melvin might qualify as a “basset” as well lol.

Vs Psu “10 starting Bassets”, Iowa, theoretically only needs to win the weights w 5/6 Bassets to win a dual. But yeah for tournament scoring gap is still wide but who knows in 3+ years

You don't have to take everything so literal. Here are the main points:
>Iowa desperately needed Basset
>Iowa still needs a lot more to catch Penn State
>Penn State will fall back to the pack when Blaze and Duke graduate

I still think to project the point Penn State falls back to the pack we need to look at least 12 years into Cael's retirement, and that is at best a maybe.

But will Blaze and Duke be able to beat Nico in the room?

"Potential" finalists ain't cutting it. Potential NCs is. Angelo. Bassett. Miller (who is a sophomore in HS). Angelo will only be on a roster with Miller for two years, one of which is Miller's true freshman year and he's got a looong way to go to be a champ as a true freshman at the weight he projects at. Brand's track record is to redshirt him. So one year. 3 guys. Ayala will be long gone, likely Keuter as well unless he gives up football. The other guys are AA ceilings.

Keep in mind that, just as a full roster and studs at every weight for the next 2 years is impacting the way these guys see Penn State, the same thing will happen at Iowa.

Say they do get the Rainey Brothers and that sets them up for 33-49 for the 4 years beginning 2025. Every stud in that window no longer will really consider Iowa. So while teams get runs here and there, and always have, long as Penn State even just keeps recruiting relatively close (and they'll do much better than that), Iowa also needs to lean on Brands development > Cael development.

Look at the weights at 174/184 after this year , a lot of sr graduate.. only guy that Arnold might not be able to beat is Haines. Everyone else he can.

So are u saying LL and Davis are not counted towards PSU’s “10 starting Bassets”? Bc I view Arnold is at least their equal.. he will be contending for NC for the next 3 years.

You must be seeing a lot of different comments from Iowa fans than I am.

Because it doesn't seem like their expectations for Bassett are "could be a finalist in year 3 after his weight clears out".

You must not be able to read to careful I’ll cliffnotes it

- psu user says PSU got “10 starting Bassets vs Iowa’s 1”

- I say Arnold is comparable to LL and Davis as a “Basset”

End

Arnold won't beat Lorenzo Norman either.

And when Levi graduates, Arnold has demonstrated he won't beat Ryder. Won't beat Duke. Mesenbrink? Nelson Brands isn't taking that bet.

Zach Ryder has entered the chat,

Exactly.

It's not that Arnold is like LL and BD. It's that Penn State already has the machinery to counter what Arnold will bring at that weight, but Iowa does not at either 125/133 just yet after next year.

But just the same, LL is going to score a lot more points in NCAA tournaments than GA over their careers in my opinion.

Since Metcalf and Borschel Iowa has put 1 guy in the finals bigger than 133 pounds. Before Arnold is assumed a finalist or Ferrari a champ maybe we should wait and see if the Hawk staff has the skill to coach an elite talent to that level. I don’t think they do. I will be shocked if Arnold competes in multiple finals or if Ferrari wins one.

Based on the Lovett and Parco I saw against Van Ness this year, yes, for sure.
Cael and Co. would never let it slip, and SVN would never make the excuse, but I'd wager a pretty penny that SVN was coming down with whatever his roommate (Kerk) had, still dealing with symptoms or recovering from it.

I get that Lovett makes a lot of people change their game plan but SVN looked off from the gun. He's not a "I'm going to stop shooting because this guy is scary" sort of wrestler. Parco is a great wrestler in his own right and SVN was out for blood the entire match.

@jmadden1998
What are your thoughts on the Brands gameneship at 184?
Not coach speak what do you think?
I sort of think he’s messing with seeds but in the long run it’s hurting Arnold..

I wish he would have gone against Starocci. I want all the starters to wrestle every dual. But I'm old so I also want to see guys competing 25+ times per year as well. The sideshow it created isn't a good look in my opinion.

Obviously we will see if Gabe is held out against a few more of the guys.
Any speculation on that?
It just seems so short sighted

I’d have to go back and watch the interview, but from memory it really seemed like Brands was conveying “we’re stuck with/going with Gabe in the post season, but Angelo is the future at this weight so he gets the first team reps until he hits 5 this year.”

I think Ferrari can only go 1 more to keep the redshirt, I could be wrong. Gabe is the only one listed on the probables for tonight so definitely think we will see him against Allred. I believe he will go the next two against McEnelly and whoever Northwestern has. Then Ferrari will go against Plott.

Do you really view Arnold the same as Lilledahl? Watching Rutgers wrestling has severely impaired your ability to identify elite talent. Yeah, they'll both qualify for the B1G tournament at least twice, they have that in common.

Arnold and Davis - maybe?? But Davis has already won better matches than Arnold in his career.

Didn't worry about it. KidDagger is already starting to make Spyker look like...

If in fact they aren't one and the same.
