Iowa news - 2024-25

lol at a post on GIA:

Just say you hate Starocci, it's okay. You'd think Iowa has a stable of high flyers based on how you post. Maybe you hate Starocci because he single handedly has more championships than Iowa's entire program during his time in college.

Rumor on GIA about Brands going over Kennedy.
Any truth to this? Does he have enough matches?
Corby keeps saying he's been beating PK in the room and has been the starter all along but was just injured for a while (he does have a big wrap on his knee, which is obviously what's limiting him offensively, LOL). Who knows. It's hard for me to believe considering how much of a slug Nelson is every time out, but Corby would know, so we'll see, I guess.

The Hawkeyes haven't put a kid on a pedestal like this since Lee. Angelo is very talented, but he wrestles for Iowa. Something will go wrong.
Yeah, this is the Catch 22 in trying to enjoy Iowa’s 15-year decline. They have the ability to land an exceptional wrestler every so many years . . . we enjoy that they have to put it all on just one guy, but then we have to endure the intensity of the worship and drama that comes with them relying on just one guy.

The Spencer stuff grew old fast, and Ferrari will be annoying for somewhat different reasons . . . I fear that the Bassett PR/hype/drama machine will be downright insufferable, and the repeated comparisons/links to Spencer innumerable (like on the level of Moriah mentions during BTN broadcasts).

Oh well, I guess that’s the cost of Iowa not having a level field. 🥲

Will be?

I’d lean toward familiarity favoring the defensive wrestler. That’s Nelson.

I think Nelson might also have some size on Kennedy. Remember, Kennedy is at 174 only because he was recruited over at 165.

Iowa is the Bo Schembecher of college wrestling.

Many years Michigan would lose a September nonconference game (often to Notre Dame), knocking them out of the national title picture, and Schembechler would rationalize that the Rose Bowl was his national championship. Then sure enough, he'd lose that too. Did it so many times that he became a legend.

Iowa will lose the dual and lose the national title, but they'll have that one guy ... and they're a legend.

Pyles and JD are getting to the point that i can see them losing customers, with the Iowa PR machine they’re grinding out. Their last show was 80% iowa talk. Weeks of mostly hyping up Iowa getting old.
Now that Bassett has committed, its going to be worse than when spencer went there. As much as i like getting wrestling content, paying to fast forward 1/2 the show isn't getting my moneys worth.

As a fan of any other team than Iowa it gets old..
Iowa still has an incredibly large fan base that they are keeping engaged.. Iowa sells clicks and that isn't going to change any time soon.
Hope and dreams and they are selling it.

They are the Charles Mathews (mistook him for Moody as the head cheerleader) of the Wrestling journalism world.

They are selling clicks and advertisement. No more, no less. Iowa and Penn State are the cornerstone to the marketing of their product. Baseball markets Dodgers and Yankees.
Iowa is like the Cowboys 😏

The frat bros just LOOOOOVE them some Black and Yellow.

The absolute GREATEST part was Pyles mentioning that Va Tech/NC state was "close", then catching himself and saying, "well, not really I guess, it was 21-10 final". But Penn State/Ohio State was razor thin at 27-13.

No wonder Spey comes across as some genius to these people.

Who is the Dak Prescott of Iowa Wrestling? Hyped, but only because of garbage time stats/wins

It's all good.

I think I will just sit back and watch Blaze and Duke, VERY QUIETLY, win multiple championships.

Bo is quite a talent no doubt, he may or may not win multiple titles himself, but all of the constant limelight and self promotion isn't really the Cael way. Carter and RBY combined is like a 25% version of Bo alone. I think the time will come when we look back with no regrets, if not no regerts or ragrets!

His loss to Luffman is his only bad loss. Weighing 220-230 and wrestling the top 3 who all have 20-30 pounds on him and are just as athletic isn't a fair comparison. If he doesn't finish high on the podium next year then I would agree with you. Also, Cowboys are winning the Super Bowl next year. Book it!
He will likely come in to next year in the top 5-6 with the weight class clearing out.

I would be worried about development if he keeps playing football, but that would be at any school.

That’s just ridiculous.

The Cowboys and Iowa are a natural fit, like the Eagles and Penn State.

His mom said he’s 245 before practice and his weigh-ins have been mid 230’s. And bad loss is defined relative to his position, which is likely 10-12ish, so Luffman was sort of a coin toss. I was on the hype train pre-season, but it’s been tough hanging onto that.

He didn't play football this year and I have seen no sign of progression. I agree on his ranking next year but that seems more about the weight clearing out than anything else.

What formed my impression of Ben this year was the bout with Gable. Sure he was gonna lose and lose big, but if you go back and watch it, Keuter literally stood straight up and let Gable use him as a tackle dummy in that match without any resistance. I didn't see a lot of heart there. I honestly expected more there. I like Ben but was surprised he didn't try to defend the legs.

Let's see how Gable does against Kerk, Hendrickson, Trephan, etc.. That will be more telling.

I think expecting progression for a heavyweight in that room is unrealistic. Based on the hype, I was expecting some sort of quantum leap from him this season (concentrating on wrestling, blah, blah, blah). I didn't see anything like it.
