Keystone Classic Tournament Thread

Tom..did you talk to Nevills after the match against Cassar? Obviously if you can’t share anything personal I understand.

Must have been a tough day for the kid. Senior year, 2x AA and maybe only a few kids in the country that can beat him and one happens to be on his own team.

Always liked Nick and hope he holds his head high. Yeah I know, he still has a shot to win the job back but....

Just hope he knows whatever happens that myself and many others always enjoyed the way he competed

Sorta reminds me of Cutch after Keystone last year

Officially, credit has to be given to Crockster for the video stream. I had it on mine, but it kept dropping. But, the sentiment is right on. Great group of fans and friends, huddled around an ipad, absorbing max wrestling.

hmm, I didn't realize it wasn't your iPad. I remember you having one, and talking about loading the Ok. St. - Minny match. Somewhere along the line, I missed the fact that we were watching @crockster's iPad. I guess that explains why @crockster was holding the iPad. I thought he was just being nice, as he was in the row in front of us, and thus his holding it made it easier for all of us to watch the match.

Definitely a great group of guys to spend the day with, watching a sport we love, and a team about which we're passionate.

I didn't speak with him after the semifinal match.

I spoke with him during the break (that was before the semi matches). We mostly talked about his younger brothers, as I had also chatted with them a few years ago at the Who's #1 Dual, which also took place at The Palestra.

RBY looks good early, but let's tap the brakes a bit. His competition has not been great so far, and 133 is loaded at the top and very deep (Gross, Micic, Jersey Kid, Fix, Pletcher, Parker, Desanto, Lizak, Erneste, etc). An AA finish won't be easy, and Top 4 a very tall order.

Is Tariq Wilson redshirting this year? Seen he wrestled unattached at the Wolfpack Open. Wasn’t sure if he was shirting or they were doing the limited weigh ins with him ( and Fausz once he gets back ) to limit what seems like a massive cut until closer to the dance.

Top 4 would be a tall order no doubt but I’ll take RBY right now over the rest of the guys you have listed in a heartbeat

We should tame our expectations. He's a true freshman, and that list has tons of mature tested elite talent. 133 is the toughest weight this year by far.

Realistically top 4 is a near impossibility. What we all see is super impressive and for the most part the coaches are pretty guarded with their praise for freshman, yet have been lavishing it on RBY.

Where he might fall between 5 and 8 will be a factor of how he develops good skills vs elite competition. He might hit a wall or break through, but he'll need a lot more time trying to ride, escape and take down studs.

I think I placed to high expectations on Nick Lee last year after a year of HS deferred in State college. I get the feeling RBYs ceiling is higher but whatever we get from him this year is light years ahead of where we were last year. These are good times.

Wilson shirted in 2017.

An interesting story from the stands of the Classic. I was sitting with @RoarLions1. On the other side of Roar was @pawrestlersintn. Around 5 pm, @pawrestlersintn brings up Flo on his iPad. I call over to @androcles, who was seated a short distance from us, and tell him that we have Fix - Lizak on video stream, so he came over to join us (and honored us by staying through the finals). It doesn't get much better than sitting with those guys, watching PSU wrestlers on the mats, and watching a top match from another arena via video stream.

Just need someone to bring a full size iPad next time. Haha... great day for PSU wrestling and PSU wrestling fans.

How many true freshmen have broken through for Cael at PSU? Retherford, McIntosh, Nico, NLee....

Sorry I missed all the fun. I won't miss it again if we go as the streaming was AWFUL. I still have a headache from the screen flashing every 15 seconds or so. Ugh. Still managed to see most of the PSU matches.

Glad to be of assistance. It was fun meeting you guys and enjoying the tournament together.

What qualifies as broken through? Hall by any definition, and Andrew Alton...
AA is breaking through although I don’t believe MM did it. Yep... definitely Hall and Alton but not many in Cael’s 10 yrs. RBY would be in rarified air at PSU if he can do it.

Cael doesn't usually send a true Freshman out unless he thinks he's ready to compete. 4 of the 6 mentioned above reached AA status ... 3 high AA.

IMO, RBY has the talent to wrestle anyone, the issue is that 133 is loaded this year. Anyone standing on the podium at the end of the year will have earned it.

Morgan and Andrew did not place as freshmen.

Almost forgot about this... it might belong in the humor thread.

No one was in either corner for Berge/Verkleeren, but Cael was standing just away from the mat. Presumably, coaches were letting the wrestlers decide it. FF to when the "controversial" TD occurred. (The only thing controversial was whether the clock ran out before the three count.) Cael did not want the bout to end in controversy, so he picked up the brick for Verkleeren and walked towards the ref.

I have no idea what he actually said, but I could only imagine it might have been, "You're not going to make me throw this, are you?" At which point the ref said, "Referees review too determine if the clock expired." Whatever was said, Cael tossed the brick back to the matside chairs, as everyone waited for the review.

Maybe it was a coaches challenge, but I'm sticking with my story.

According to Byers, Verk asked for the call to be challenged. Not sure how that works with no one in his corner.

I missed the Cassar vs Nevills match and I am trying to watch it on replay. There are only 4 mats available on my phone for replay 1, 2, 6 and 3. Was this match on one of these mats? TIA.

Thanks. Flo has the match listed as mat 5 so if that was correct I guess I won't be able to view it.

Thanks to all who chimed in for the Keystone. Your updates were helpful while I was at church. I listened to Byers the rest of the way, but the comments add color to the action and I appreciate the effort....and the frustrations of those with technical hurdles.

Nevills - Cassar was wrestled on Mat 5.

To add on to @pawrestlersintn's post, when the Berge - Verkleeren match started, not only were the PSU coaches not in either wrestler's corner, they weren't even close to the corners. When Berge appeared to injure his knee, the coaches and the medical personnel all found their way onto the mat pretty quickly. Once Berge was on his feet, it seemed to be a conversation between the trainer, CS, and Berge that determined whether or not Berge would continue in the match. After the match resumed, the PSU coaches didn't go to the corners, but they did position themselves near the two corners. (Mat 2 -- the mat where the contest took place -- was the tightest configuration on the floor. It was the only mat where there was no room to walk behind the table.)

At the end of the match, Verkleeren gave repeated hand signals to throw the brick. CS had to walk from where he was standing behind the corner to get the brick. My memory is that he did throw it at Verkleeren's request.

Oh, and I'm diggin the little raven haired beauty mat girl.

At one point during the Classic, when I believe my iPhone was getting charged, I asked @pawrestlersintn what the guys were discussing in the Classic thread. He mentioned that the mat girl was getting a mention, and he brought up @TangSoo's post on his iPad to show me.

Later, when I had my phone, I was down on the floor and happened to be by the mat girl in question. @TangSoo, I was tempted to ask her if I could take her picture, so that I could post it for you. Alas, I thought she might be a little creeped out by this old guy randomly asking if he could take her picture. So instead, I went up to her and told her that on a PSU wrestling message board, where lots of people were discussing the match, she was getting some compliments. She smiled and laughed.

On the 6 mats used during the Classic, 5 of them had older guys (appeared to be affiliated with Penn) serving as mat people. She was by far the prettiest of the people used at the Classic to alert the ref when the period had run out. When they switched to 3 mats for the 1st, 3rd, and 5th place matches, she moved to mat 3, as mat 1, where the finals took place, was assigned two refs per match.

Anyone else notice Cenzo looks like a different animal this year. He’s out there looking to pin people. I think all his wins are pins so far this year.

He does look different. To me, he just looks a lot healthier. I'm pretty sure he was dinged up last season.

You still get a flag.

that sucks..I couldn't wait to cancel that subscription. Maybe there's a workaround that other can help you with..
Even though you cancelled (as I did as well) you still have access until that subscription runs out. I don't blame you for not revisiting though, PTSD and all.

Anyone who's gone back to watch the archive--is it any better, or equally offensive? My guess w/ all the Red is a Commie Plot by Foley.

Or maybe it was that Moose and Squirrel....

Regarding Cenzo--I recall the quote from Cael on media day--something like "Cenzo's been working all summer with Casey. In my experience, when you do that, you get pretty good."

I'm assuming this is a Keystone Classic mention...not only did the coaches hold Cenzo out of the Classic last year, he didn't go against Lehigh in the dual either. Did wrestle vs Indiana in the match after.

Re. Falls, VJ is already ahead of his pin count for the past 2 years. With 3 in 2017, 4 in 2018, and 5 already in 2019, he following a normal natural progression so far, imo. Time will tell, he's already established as a winner, not sure I'd yet call him a pinner.

I wanted to point out another aspect of the Classic. The wrestling teams are not holed up in locker rooms. All of the squads are up in the stands. This makes them easy to be accessed by the fans. PSU had the largest fan bloc at the Classic, so the PSU wrestlers and coaches were constantly being asked between bouts, and during the break, to sign things, to have their picture taken, etc. I was amongst the players and coaches several times while this was happening, and they could not have been more accommodating.

Ha! An onsite wingman effort from Tom. That makes my day! I'll confirm that I'm too old for that young lady. I was about 85% sure she was Asian, and I loved the way that long dark hair was flying around. Both a weakness of mine. My long dark haired Asian girlfriend would probably not approve of this message :)

She was definitely Asian. Her hair was very nice, and she had a way of flicking her head to move her hair that was captivating. :D:D

OK, but I was hoping for blue or green eyes...
Asian with green eyes ... here ya go!
