Last Chance WTT qualifier - Friday, May 3 (Nick Nevills)

LMAO. It was more of a strobe effect this time.

Anyone know who that was cornering Mark? Seemed like some random dude off the street.

Edit--just saw your question DM--no way that guy is Varner.
It was just a guess at a distance. I couldn't see the face. He is relatively tall. Tall in relation to Hall ... at least.

Walsh over Brucki 17-9. Hall will get Walsh in the finals. Walsh has got to be more tired than Hall, who made quick work of his three opponents.

It could be, I suppose, but he had a bigger beer gut than I do.

Brucki gave Walsh a fun match, but lost something like 17-8

Nevills is wrestling a guy whose club affiliation is just "Maine".

I wonder if he wrestles bears in the back woods of Maine, especially since he is a 125 KG guy. If he is hairy and growls, Nick may be in for a real match.

The current match on mat #1 is getting into football scores: now 17-12.

Okay, Nick Nevills is now up.

Nevills with the 12-1 tech. A couple of TDs and a bunch of turns.

Not sure who the guy in Nick's corner is. But he is as big as Nevills.

Hall and Nevills both into the finals. Win there and it is on to Disneyland ... or at least the World Team Trials in two weeks.

Finals matchups:

57 Sanders vs. Terao
61 Mack vs. Deshazer
65 McKenna vs. Heil
70 Mason vs. Keating
74 LaValle vs. Poklikuha
79 Hall vs. Walsh
86 Asper vs. Bonaccorsi
92 Boykin vs. Smith

125 Nevills vs. Francisco

Finals are now underway. Starting at 57 KG and moving on up. All bouts on Mat #3.

Who is Walsh - was he a decent NCAA wrestler? What skool?

McKenna couldn't solve Heil, who won both scrambles for the only takedown points. McKenna didn't look good at US Open either. I'd not have guessed he'd be the guy out at 65kg for the trials.

Heil beats McKenna 5-2. McKenna was in Final X last year at this weight and this year he doesn't make WTT.

Rider U. He made the NCAA finals one year against I. Martinez.
My bad. Walsh lost to IMAR at Midlands.

Here are his stats:

*One of only two two-time All-Americans in Rider Wrestling history (John Carvalheira)**
**Rider’s all-time leader in wins by fall (39), surpassing Tim Morrison’s nearly 35-year old record of 29**

2017-18:
- NCAA Qualifier, falling in the blood round
- EWL Champion at 165
- Two-time EWL Wrestler of the Week
- Posted a 26-3 record with 10 falls
- Went 17-1 in dual matches, including a 5-1 mark in EWL matches
- Avenged his lone dual loss of the year to Lock Haven All-American Chance Marsteller with a victory for the EWL title
- Won nine matches against NCAA qualifiers and a 10th with an NWCA All-Star Classic victory over Princeton’s Jonathan Schleifer

2016-17:
- All-American, finishing 7th at 165
- EWL Wrestler of the Year
- EWL Champion
- Rider Athlete of the Year
- 2nd in NCAA Division I with 16 pins
- 33-4 record, including 14-0 mark in dual matches and 6-0 record in EWL matches
- Southeast Open Champion
- 2nd at Midlands
- 3rd at Keystone Classic
- NWCA All-Academic Team

2015-16:
- All-American
- Rider Athlete of the Year
- EWL Wrestler of the Year
- Won four of six matches at NCAA's
- Was the 15th seed and defeated the #2, #4 and #7 seeds at Nationals
- Went 6-0 in EWL duals
- Won 28 matches
- Placed at Midlands for the third year in a row (3rd in 2015, 4th in 2014, 5th in 2013 during his red-shirt season)
- Ranked 14th by the NCAA Coaches Panel at the end of the 2016 dual meet season
- Placed runner-up at the Keystone Classic after placing third the year before
- Named to the NWCA All-Academic Team

2014-15:
- Won five of seven matches at the 2015 University freestyle Nationals
- Named to Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie team
- Won a match at the 2015 NCAA Championships
- 157 pound champion in the EWL
- Named to the NWCA All-Academic Team

2013-14:
- Redshirted and compiled a record of 33-7 (11 pins) wrestling unattached.

At Camden Catholic High School:
Was ranked 18th in the nation at 152 in 2012-13...a four-time NJ State place winner.

It was Taylor Walsh in the NCAA finals against Dieringer (not Chad Walsh)

Dang, some of the close up camera shots of wrestlers checking in for their matches be like …

So Penn State and NLWC will have a bunch of guys at WTT and Final X:

Josh Rodriquez
Nico
Zain
Nolf
Hall
DT
Nickal and Lefever at 92 KG
... and hopefully Nevills (if he wins in the finals today)
Will Cassar compete at 97 KG or 125 KG? (He is qualified)

Also, a number of guys at Juniors: Brooks and RBY (others?)

Geno Morelli is qualified at 79 KG (and technically Brooks can compete on the senior level too).

Vallimont is qualified at 74 KG but he is now with another club.

Molinaro and Berge are both qualified at 70 KG. Will Molinaro go 65 KG however?

Nevills is tied at 2 with criteria lead at break. Francisco is HUGE

65 is a lot deeper than it was this time last year.

Last year Joey wrestling pretty much even with a nearly burned-out Stieber. Now we see a bunch of new young faces who are beginning to adapt to free-style.

Looks like Heil just has McKenna's number. Off the top of my head, Heil has to be 5-0 now against McKenna in the last few years in both folkstyle and freestyle. Although, I think McKenna should be at the WTT and can beat a number of the qualifiers at 65kg, you get what you earn.

Last year there was no Zain, JO or Yianni. This doesnt explain why he lost to Heil.

Maybe karma for the year he shafted Zacherl out of his spot, then went to Worlds and misses weight.
