Maryland's Tank Booker

Don't need an All-American, need a big man that can actively participate in the rotation.
then he would fill the bill.....but as I said above, he may be looking for more $ than PSU feels comfortable providing. On the other hand, Chop may have a relationship with him. We'll see. DTs aren't growing on trees ....have not seen many out there.

Staff would be stupid not to pursue this guy. If he’s hunting for the biggest NIL deal, then it probably ain’t happening, but at least gotta throw your hat in the ring.

Well staff is not stupid. Chop will be asked, I'm sure if he's a fit for PSU. He's a rotation piece not all conference. But, does appear to have the size to be a run stopper.

This guy isn't the second coming of Warren Sapp at DT -in fact, he was a rotational piece for a bad UMD team. UMD landed a DT in the portal that figured to take a bunch of Booker's snaps. Very unlikely he would have the type of impact that Robinson has had.

Now with that being said, our defense lacks many body types in 300+ range that can play the 1T. I can't imagine the coaching staff would turn down another rotational piece at DT with the Michigans, Iowas, and Illinois on the schedule in 2023.

I'm with you. He's a bigger body that we don't have a lot of. One positive would be that in our scheme, he wouldn't be doubled every down vs MDs 3-4 NT. Also, he wouldn't necessarily be needed as a starter and could be the 2nd/3rd guy up.

Not seeing any offers or follows yet. No clue if we are interested or vice-versa.

I can see the staff turning down lots of below average 300+ lb DT's. And they probably already have.

Ellies and Izzard will both be playing in 2023 at around 300 lbs, and Artis has gotten complimented on his development during his redshirt season and is now listed at 315 lbs. Van den Berg will likely play 1 tech and play at over 290 lbs in 2023.

Franklin has said he would like to bring in a DT to contribute in the 1 tech DT rotation but just any big body that does not have the ability to contribute at a high level won't make the team better. At this point scholarships for the 2023 season are in short supply and the staff is going to be pretty selective on how they will use them. Unless they can find a player like they did going into 2021 in Tangelo I'm betting they go with what they have. And I believe Tangelo was a starter where he played at previously, not a player that might not even hold his place in the rotation on a bad team if that is the case with Booker as mentioned above.

EDIT:
Just went and checked Booker's 2022 season statistics with MD and he had 27 tackles (17 solo), 5 TFL and 2 sacks. For reference:
Mustipher had 34 tackles (19 solo), 0.5 TFL and 0 sacks.
Beamon had 16 tackle (8 solo), 6 TFL and 0 sacks
Ellies had 15 tackles (6 solo), 2 TFL and 1 sack
Izzard had 10 tackles (7 solo), 4 TFL and 2 sacks in 9 games

So maybe the discussion here has been selling Booker a little short....

I hope we pursue him. I think he would certainly help vs UM and Iowa.

Sounds like it. Although hopefully it is not as one poster speculated, a possible NIL fishing trip. I would think Chop Robinson would know about him. The other dilemma for PSU is the absence of a DL coach.

Surely Chop would have let him know how NIL works at PSU.

And possibly for players transferring after being in a P5 program for 3 or 4 years the actual position coach is not a deal breaker. For 16-18 year olds that are looking for someone to hold their hand it probably means more than to 22 or 23 year olds whose main interest's are likely playing time, playing for a winner, and getting NFL exposure.

Get the impression he is a graduate. What sort of master's degree he wishes to pursue may be an issue as well.

Article on rivals that PSU is hosting a transfer player from a B10 team at a position of need this coming weekend.

It seems the only position of need now is DT, so it seems to me that it's a good posibiity that Mr. Tank Booker is coming to check out PSU this weekend, which would be a nice development......

Go get him. We need this.

So what? Sew buttons.

I think his point is that kid grew up outside Cincy which means he probably has always wanted to play for tOSU. He didn't get an offer from tOSU so went to MD. Now that he has an offer, and tOSU is only an hour drive from his HS, it is assumed he has a preference to tOSU (all other things being equal). It is just as likely that he is pissed at tOSU for not offering him and loves CJF. Nobody knows, really.

PSU will be fine with or without him, Devon Ellies has to play like an All Big10 player if PSU want to win the BIG10.

Which is why and "so what" comment should be responded to with a "duh".........

No doubt PSU needs Ellies to perform well. But from what I have seen Izzard is the more likely 1 tech DT to perform at a level that woud get All B10 recognition as he seems much more active and disruptive with a chance to make a big play or TFL when PSU will need it against the best teams on the schedule.

We've seen a good bit of Izzard, Ellies and Beamon, but what could take the DL to the next level is just as likely to be the emergence of a player we haven't seem or haven't seen much of such as Townley or Artis, or even van den Berg.

PSU needs to adjust the recruiting strategy with DTs. We could always use a couple big DTs who can play on the roster. Problem is there are not many big DTs coming out of HS. There are tons of good size OL. Some of those OL played DT in HS. Vega Iaone, CJ Thorpe, Anthony Donkoh and so on. We should recruit an extra OL who can then play DT.

Seems pretty simple. Have you shared the idea with the coaches. Bet they never would have thought of this.
