Match Thread for Indiana and Northwestern

People are not understanding the concept of 4 matches.

Kyle Snyder had 3 regular season matches in 2016 (and the pre-virus threshold was 17 matches, not 4). Nobody made him sit out March.

"4 matches" makes a wrestler eligible for an at-large bid to nationals, if they don't earn a slot at B10s. Earn your way in, and "4 matches" is irrelevant.

But this year has the Covid wrinkle right? If you don't wrestle 4 and get sick before Big Tens you can't get an at large and miss NCAAs.

Could also be the diametric opposite as well - get Lee his 4 starts before trying him at 49. Then they'd be able to see how Nick handles the switch to 49. If it doesn't go well (i.e., Nick doesn't look dominant at the weight and prefers to go back to 41), Nick could transition back to 41 before B1Gs and NCAAs.
How is that going to work? Nick isn't going to be sitting around eating cheeseburgers and playing video games to get to 149 then try to descend back to 141 if he doesn't like it. And there is no way he can put on quality weight in that time, let alone lose it again. Plus factor in NCAA descent rules and it becomes nearly impossible to pull off. The BIG tournament starts in almost a month.

The choice is simple. Either Beau goes 49 and deals with being undersized or he sits this year. And that's assuming he gets the nod over the other 149s. Nick didn't work this hard to bump up a weight and not be fully prepared to do so his senior year. I would be shocked if Nick goes anywhere but 141.

The virus-year wrinkle is true -- provided that PSU forfeits that weight at B10s -- but context does matter.

Eligible =/= receiving. Those 4 had better be varsity matches, supplemented by an extra if needed. Nobody is getting an at-large with 4 extra matches + sitting out B10s. NCAA will send starters to nationals.

Could a guy with 4 extra matches fall 1 place short at B10s and get an at-large? Theoretically yes. Practically no, unless those extras were against other teams' starters.

Nick strikes me as a the type of kid who would take one for the team, especially in a free year, if it could mean big team implications. The question is him going to 149 really what's best for the team?

This kind of line is gratuitous BS. It is an opinion board.

Making fun of posters that expect too much right out of a 17 day layoff is gratuitous?

Is this gratuitous?
Berge and Verkleeren must practice together in the time out corner of the room.

Apparently you're not aware that the wrestling board isn't the football board. It's one thing to critique a wrestler, (no leg attacks, can't get out from bottom etc.), it's another to trash 2 of them because they aren't performing like a senior Nolf or Nickal.

If you were around last year you maybe could've read one of the half dozen or so articles about how Verk has to remain even keel during matches to prevent an insulin spike. You also could've read about Berge's concussion, or maybe his head gear yesterday could've given you a clue.

As has been said several times in this thread, there are parents of wrestlers that read and participate on this board. Maybe we could avoid gratuitously trashing their kids instead of worrying about someone calling out ridiculously lofty expectations.

If that won't work there's a wonderful place where you're free to trash any and all things PSU. Head on over to the Hawkeye Report, I'm sure they'd be happy to have you.

Let's get back to how awesome Seth looked after growing up to 276 lbs - yikes. He looked surprisingly fast and athletic in neutral which was the biggest eye opener for me. Sure the competition was pretty suspect, but I came away with all positives. If it develops that Kirk isn't ready, those performances certainly bring AA into the conversation and maybe just maybe he can give it a better go against Cassi this year.

Anyone know why Beard didn't wrestle yesterday? I might have missed the announcement. Thanks

God almighty please tell me Beau isn't bucking the ask from Carl in a free year. If this turn into another drama like we saw 3 years ago, I will friggin lose it.
Maybe a little less coffee?

I would be shocked if Beau actually beats Nick Lee in practice or anywhere else, but the simple fact that he believes he can coupled with his great athletic skill makes me think another PSU monster is lurking in the shadows.
You would be shocked and it would have leaked from the room long ago.

Fact is it ain't happening. More importantly decisions this year impact next year and next year wont have an * next to it. So let's do what is best for next year and if it works out this year great.

If the hawks win the * year good on them.

I'll be honest - I think some humble pie is REALLY good for Starocci. I am not talking about his demeanor but Carter has not taken a loss yet (except in the room obviously). Quite honestly, Iowa fans want to mock us but can you blame us for having sky high expectations for Carter? It's in freestyle yes but he just decimated a much older former AA in Skatzka and beat Chance Marstellar!

But a reminder that there is so much to work on and to not take any match for granted can go a long long way for him.

I know the result, but did CStar really lose this match? How is the video clip below (starting around 3:16) not showing an escape point for CStar? I know the refs reviewed the action but they must have been reviewing for a CStar takedown. There was no brick, so the refs reviewed on their own and seemed to completely ignore/miss the escape. I couldn't understand why PSU didn't challenge the non-escape point and 31 extra seconds of riding time for Washington. Given that it ended up being a 1 point win, you gotta wonder how the missed call affected the outcome.

I made a similar post, as I think did one other.

That said, I can also understand PSU not throwing a brick, because of their faith in Carter's conditioning (not wanting to give Washington a breather) and that Carter could get a takedown and his subsequent riding time would negate Washington's (given what transpired in the 2nd period).

Missing the call in real-time was the issue for me that I believe made a difference.

Not only that but CS then got caught for 2 back points trying to get in the last 8.

I’d love to have seen him take top in the third. He was only down 2 and already had ridden him fir 2 minutes. Only needed a little more riding time to get over one minute and stood a great chance for more back points and stalling calls. That is the Indiana wrestler’s weakness.

What's confusing to me is why Cael even let Bartlett stay at 141 for this long, it's almost February. He could have told Bartlett a month ago "look, appreciate your moxie but you aren't beating out Nick Lee" - if Bartlett is truly the best option at 149 he should be wrestling 149 pounders and getting used to their size and strength.

Now I know Cael knows what he's doing and there's probably something I'm missing, but keeping both Bartlett and Lee at 141 this late isn't making sense to me. The only way it does is if it was already pretty apparent in the room that Bartlett wasn't going to be a better option at 149.
Exactly. People have been talking about this all year lol.

Nick is the reigning #1 @41 for PSU and is ranked #2 in the nation right now at the weight. The only way Bartlett can be #1 @41 at PSU is via wrestle-off (given that he didn't get the start in either match today, it's a pretty clear indication that Lee is getting the better of the action in the room prior to the first match (which has been quite some time since the team has returned to the mats - more than a month)). I think Cael is clearly signalling to Bartlett (who has the bigger frame anyway), that he should make a go at 49 for the good of the team - especially considering that this is a free year of eligibility! It makes zero sense for Bartlett to sit on the bench during the postseason as our #2 41, when he potentially could be our #1 at 49 if he starts dedicating himself to and doing the things needed to accomplish that objective.
I've read a lot about " Cael is signaling" lol when it comes down to it you don't think he just tells his guys what to do and then they freaking do it?
He is the coach after all. No "signaling" needed lol

Was Brooks the number one guy in his class p4p and if not then who was? Kid looks incredible. I'm assuming Kerk was the number one guy in the class but other than him I can't think of anyone.
