Match Thread for Indiana and Northwestern

God I am throwing up in my mouth over these announcers with their final analysis of the match.

I think Carter might be ill. Let's hope its just a cold or something but he looked like a shadow of his normal self especially in terms of energy. I am sure he will be fine, but that was not a 100% performance for sure. We'll never know, but I am confident next week it will look like night and day. I can't wait to hear Ben Askren jump off the band wagon on this one. RBY didn't look so much different either.

Go for it man. We keep receipts though .... 😉
I am a bit giddy, but also know there is almost no chance this is an accurate representation of this team.

Some of y'all need to relax. Not every team can be a model of consistency like my hawks ;)

With covid, there's basically no chance they let anybody wrestle while having symptoms. More likely just a little out of shape/rusty from the shut down. Or just a case of nerves for his debut, which happens to the best of us. I can imagine getting thrown to your back right away could cause you to dump adrenaline.

It took him more than a year to get back on the Brooks bus after Midlands 2018. He sure can cling to a result.

I just went back and re-watched the end of the first period of Carter S match. With the score 8-1 and 30 seconds left in the period the IU wrestler lets Carter go and Carter immediately shoots and they scramble. I thought at first Carter had the takedown, but could see they were both holding on in a way that there wouldn't be a takedown.

My question is, how is it possible that an escape wasn't awarded?

That would have made it 8-2 and probably ended the period that way.

looked like conditioning and with covid you never know. RBY looked like he slowed down. Verk had opportunities and didn't capitalize. Berge needs to open up earlier. Joe Lee looked good. Carter looked lost against the long reach. Sometimes we make too much of the 'room' effect - I thought we would do better at 97.
Anyone know about extra matches?

I was only listening, but some positive notes I took from listening: strong efforts by Nick Lee, AB, and Snacks. And it’s great to have Brady back. Also, it sounds like Howard and Beard should be in lineup soon 🤞

Glass is half full

Lots of negatives here being discussed...I tend to be more positive -

1 - PSU was finally active and we got to watch!
2 - Nick Lee looked like Nick Lee
3 - Joe Lee had a solid debut
4 - Brady Berge is back on the mat and healthy
5 - Brooks is competing again after missing a few rokfin opportunities and he looked good
6 - Atta boy, Seth!

I don’t post here often - today, looked a lot like the in game threads in the Den.

No one at 125, a first match and a walk-on from a branch campus (if I heard the announcer correctly). I don’t know enough to comment on wrestling - but those seem like some significant hurdles to clear, no?

As cliche as this sounds, Cael clearly wasn't as concerned with Carter taking a L as getting a good learning experience. He didn't give Carter top for a reason in the 3rd.

Byers on extra matches (sorry for the spelling):
  • Starocci got a Fall over Dieters
  • Gardner got a Fall over Curvin at 157
  • Kraesig at 165 9-0 over Giltcher & 13-7 over Coakley
  • Bartlett at 141: Fall over John Moran
  • Barraclaugh vs. Curvin 8-0 at 157
  • Edsell vs. Dieters 10-5

Byers just said CS just picked up a fall in an extra match. And it sounds like a bunch of other guys got wins too. Byers just said they went 7-0.

Edit: You guys above paid more attention than I did.

Beau Bartlett went in extra match at 141
Thinking Byers said he had a pin. C* also had a pin

Carter may've thought he had an escape and kept riding time under a minute. But alas they somehow thought Washington maintained control during that review (time to rest also didn't help Carter). I am not worried about him.

He won by pin in extra match, so not ill.

Couple of all timers imo lost their debut matches.

Markie losing his first at Carver Hawkeye was one thing, but at Indiana??? This one was just painful, but these are strange times and it was obvious that 50% of the whole team was flat. A good bit of rust on display to shake off.

NW will beat us if we don't get some energy for lunch. No need to panic, it is just a testament to how rare 159-0 is, you have to wrestle through fatigue, sickness, being flat and some flukes.

Quick ? To get in the 4 qualifying matches - do they have to be at the weight for the tourney or any 4 matches.

Relevancy - Bartlett going today at 141.

Didn’t matter in this meet, but we can’t keep giving up 6 points at 125. Maybe Covid is in play, but starting in a hole is becoming a pattern.

This kid names Forfeit sucks. Our worst wrestler by far, and the way he fades at the end, inexcusable. He stands no chance against Spencer.

This will be a weird year. Howard along for the trip but not medically cleared.......strange but tells me it isn't covid related.

BB going 41, I guess the move to 49 discussed so many times here ain't happening.

Joe Lee looks to cradle every chance he gets......changing his name to Bo Lee?

Glad to have Brady back!

Carter, nice fight after a wtf first.

Aaron is so much like Cael it is scary. No wasted movement, everything patient and smooth.

Higgins, is this the first time someone from a branch campus wrestled varsity?

Northwestern better look out, Cael will have this team dramatically better at 4 pm today. ;)

That's the only match we should forfeit because it's 6 points either way and saves an injury if you only have 1 guy for the weight. My 2 cents.
