My uneducated thoughts on the midland finals. Marinelli is better than I thought still low AA. Stoll, Kemerer, Snorenson, and Willie wrestle strategic matches not to get taken down... boring. This style will keep them from ever getting gold at nationals ever. Lee wrestled the New Iowa style and lost. Love the kid, hope he does not follow the trend of the afore mentioned.

Footnote I can’t take credit for the Snorenson label an anonymous friend g@!&banger may have suggested it.

I posted this earlier, but I wonder how Spencer's knee felt wrestling on back to back days. Not making excuses for him, just pointing out that might have played a role. I assume he takes an Olympic RS and I do not see him staying in college for 6 years so I would think they pull the RS but if he's not 100% healthy they wont do it. From a team perspective, nice showing for Iowa, but overall the field was weak, IMO. Come 2020 they will be legit title contenders, but I just don't see it until the 3 N's graduate.

Lee was a monster at UNI and looked even better at Midlands, TF'ing the #8 in the 2nd period. Then he met Bresser, probably the wrong style opponent for him and a lot of others to get comfortable with and lost a close one... So a Med FF in the consy's?

I didnt notice any injury during his last match and he didnt mention anything in the post match presser that I saw

I think its bush to abandon the consy's cause the shine of super stardom got a little dull. I hope im wrong

The Midlands have really gone down hill. Those finals matches lacked star power and were honestly quite boring. Even Kemerer's match was boring and he is exciting to watch. I'm surprised he tried to ride Shields for as long as he did when he wasn't even close to turning him.

I am hoping not, but maybe getting screamed at for scoring too much is wearing him down.

Since this was an all Iowa "Midlands" thread congrats to the Hawkeyes on going 5-5 in the finals! Not many here thought that was a possibility. They certainly showed up ready to win the tournament. ASU... not so much

if anyone needs to rest up for tonight, put the midlands finals on....guaranteed ZZZZzzzzz

Take away gross and there wasnt much entertainment value for the average guy.

Dunkej01 wakes up every morning thinking "how am i going to make Iowa wrestling look bad today?"

Better start yourself another hate thread, its been too long!. Haterz gonna Hate!

I don't know what it is, but yesterday was pretty much my breaking point with Iowa. IDK, maybe Spencer Lee will bring some interest back for me.

Expressed my thoughts already about Marinelli, and we've got to hear about him all the time for some reason. An incredibly boring wrestler who will get some AAs. His hairline is the most provocative thing you notice about him.

The 197 match was where it came to a head. Ridiculous. This is supposed to spark interest in college wrestling??? And, Turk, I have to call you out for calling this a great match. You need to get the Iowa washed off you.

I used to have interest in them - tremendous history, fan base interesting to follow on HR although delusional like many, interesting coaches, good story about a former power trying to climb back to the top.

My thinking now is that they will just hang around about the same, getting knocked down every couple years when a non-traditional team is at the peak of their cycle. Kind of like Minnesota, but better.

IMO, the only things worth paying attention to now are:

1) Spencer
2) Kemerer - I will be interested in how he does once Nolf is out of the way
3) The antics of Tom and Terry - I think they are good coaches, don't like the style, but their personalities are interesting for wrestling - especially Terry.
4) PDIII - and not for anything on the mat

"Saving college wrestling" clip above says it all...

Watching the Midlands yesterday was a nice reminder of why I should always pick the HS viewing option when it doesn't involve something personally relevant, PSU or something in college wrestling that has an out of the ordinary intrigue. Wasted day besides the excitement of Spencer. Honestly, the Princeton Open was more interesting as it contained a lot of familiar faces and the intrigue of opening weekend.

Today, I concur with him. Maybe the Scuffle will be just as bad, but that tournament yesterday was pretty much everything that ails college wrestling besides the fanfare for Spencer. You had it all - Tsirtsis, the Iowa OOB line shuffle, the ASU effect, the Stoll sumo, etc. Thank god for Seth Gross...

More like you wake up every day thinking "How am I going to play the hate card on the BWI board today?" It's grown rather tiresome IMO.

I was switching between Midlands and Powerade all day. I watched Powerade for excitement. Then when I needed to bring my blood pressure down, I switched to Midlands. The HS matches were terrific - filled with drama, idiocy (Silva wrestled like a punk), and an 8th grader who looked like he's ready to take on Spencer Lee right now. And you all know what Midlands was like, if you stayed awake long enough.

Iowa-style wrestling IS KILLING THE SPORT!!

You are repeatedly calling me out for thinking a match was good? Piss off dude. Wash the hate off yourself. I was glad Tom let them even wrestle the match. Tan Tom would have had Warner MFF out.. Wilke got some payback on the young freshman. He threw a worn down Warner around a bit giving Jacob a valuable learning experience. Also gave Wilke some confidence moving forward.

You used to have interest in Iowa but now you don't all of a sudden? I guess Iowa having champions at half the weights of the Midlands wasn't enough for you. They didn't win sexy enough? Not enough entertainment for you? Suriano was boring aswell right? Im sure you would say he would've wrestled differently if he was still in Valley of Happy perfect entertaining wrestlers.. correct?

I will never wash the Iowa off me Dice. I am ALL IOWA forever and always. Do you notice how i spend a lot more time on the boards defending/supporting my own team than i do trashing other teams? I suggest you do the same.

Happy New Year!

You're right, but I'm giving Lee a pass, as I suspect that match was an aberration.

I give him a pass as well. Sometimes you got to just take the win. Two of PSU's bonus leaders....Hall and Bo both had one point wins in the Lehigh match. The problem that Lee had was a bad decision with under 30 seconds cost him a 1 point win. When Bresser turned and started to get away at about the 30 second mark....if Lee just pushes him away and avoids a takedown in the last 20 seconds....Riding time gives him a 1 point win. That was not the choice Lee made......and we all missed out on Suriano vs Lee :(

Mr. Lee forgot to add that to the binder. I'd say that it is the #1 reason why they are losing the recruiting war.

Big historic tournament on the grand stage sure to get plenty of air-time from FLO and the like. Now we have a week of video highlights of...I'm not sure. Stall calls, strategic matches, you make the call stuff where you decide if the TD is in bounds or out. Fortunately, they can show a bunch of clips of Seth Gross pounding the p*ss out of guys and scoring on top.

You go to something like the Keystone Open and FLO's got a weeks worth of Nolf inventing a new move, Zain displaying the latest in CIA interrogation techniques, Bo Nickal doing something Bo Nickalish, a selection of slickness by Mark Hall, or Vincenzo doing something big. Even the secondary stars throw in some excitement with Keener headlocking someone, Cassar blasting some doubles, lol, Nick Lee running the equivalent of a marathon, legendary Bo Pipher reversing somebody to his back, etc.

And it's not just PSU. I'll watch Cornell wrestle anytime, even hate tOSU is a pleasure to watch for the most part. Watched OK State-Montana and it blew Iowa-RU out of the water in terms of watchability. (Yes, the Heil - Meredith match was a bit thrilling even with the lack of scoring).

The push to the boundary style by itself can't kill the sport because viable options exist.

Continuing to focus on the act busy set is complicity.

I agree with this. Spencer made a mistake that cost him the match. I think he has so much confidence in his ability he thought he would get another score in time.

Yes, you're right - they didn't win sexy enough for me. It's more of a trash of the tournament, but with Iowa being the dominant team there, they are in the x-hairs.

Again, yes I'm calling you out about that being a great match. Are you going to tell me that the 1st period of that match was good for wrestling? That Warner's 3 seconds of offense (before the final 30 seconds of busy work) is a good thing? I get it from Wilke, he's a grinder, that's what he needs to do, but how is that a good thing that he was more offensive minded than a guy much more talented than him? And the circle dance shit just drives me crazy.

Not every PSU wrestler is aggressive or offensive minded. Nick was not much different when he was here. But damn, how do you account for Marinelli? It's obvious he is very physically talented and a damn fine wrestler. His matches are complete garbage to watch and they don't have to be. I can't account for that. Gulibon got trashed by many after the unfortunate rankings thing and even got called on the carpet by many here, but I would watch a match of his all day long before most all Iowa matches, even if it meant sitting through six failed finishes.

Agree that it is not killing the sport. Iowa would have to start winning something for that to come into play.

There is plenty of good wrestling out there to watch, I may have been a bit over the top in my indictment of college wrestling above. Unfortunately not much of it happened yesterday in prime time of having something good to watch.

Its been discussed on the boards that a certain school made videos of the "iowa style" to say to recruits do you want to wrestle like that or do you want to wrestle like our guys with the NC, WC & OC medals.

As Mark Richt said last night...."watch the tape"

Maybe BTN knew what they were getting and thats why they didnt broadcast the finals?

I must have missed that. Assuming it was tOSU. The guy might have an aversion to duals and a day-glo skin tint but he sure knows how to coach and recruit. Makes me fear them even more. They are a formidable foe.

Acknowledging a program style and bitching about that style being boring as hell and not appreciating how that style opens said program's superior wrestlers to high stakes upset loses is not haters hating.

You and i looked at that match much differently. You are spoiled with all your top recruits expecting all wrestlers to look like superstars.

How many times did Marinelli get taken down? You think Alex wears that giant knee brace as a fashion statement? You don't think that limits him? He sure knew how to shut up Richie Lewis again didn't he? Beat a tough finals opponent that mopped the mat with Valencia the match before.. Marinelli woke up a champion today. That's what i know!

You watched the Warner/Wilke match with no rooting interest other than wanting to be entertained. I watched a good match between 2 Hawkeye wrestlers trying to win the 197 bracket at the Midlands. It was bittersweet for me to watch. You ever notice wrestle off matches are low scoring, respect your opponent you grind with everyday type matches? That's what you saw Dice. You should call up Wilke and Warner and tell them to apologize to you for not keeping you entertained... I don't give a rats ass that you hate that i liked the match. It's asinine for you to call me out for that. Get over it. Now log on to Flo and load up some entertaining Gulibon matches to make you feel better about the boring Midlands!

WildTurk, you certainly are displaying a thin skin. It must be difficult to feel the need to defend the indefensible. The Midlands tourney was a shadow of its former self. Any realistic assessment would reach that conclusion. Midlands has hosted many great wrestlers over the years, and many inspiring performances. This year? Not so much.

Except for Gross and Kemmerer, what stars that showed up at Midlands didn't shine so brightly. Suriano maybe took a sleeping pill before finals. Lee started out by wrestling his PA-style and tore through the bracket. But then fell into Iowa-style and was a bust. Even if that unawarded reversal had been awarded and Spencer had won, he still wrestled an Iowa match, not a Spencer Lee match. Sad.

Lee like most elite wrestlers don't want to concede even one point and sometimes it comes back to bite you. He may learn from it, but he also may be wired to never want to concede anything. I guess time will tell.

Ok hello to all of you again.
Just been reading the last 3 pages.
Sad that all of you where not entertained this
week end. That is on you really, u know how
Iowa wrestles the way you talk all the time
so why did you waste all that time watching?
Be honest with yourself, you where hoping Iowa
would lose. Flo even said Arz. would win it right.
Also Hall and Stoll, Stoll is a greco type hwt wants
to get his under hooks and throw sure he is pushing
but opponent does try to push back cause he knows if
he comes forward he might just get caught.
Not all teams and wrestlers are or have guys that
where rankend 1-5 in there weight class coming out of
high school so way it is.
Guess all I say is don't like how Iowa wrestles save your money and
time don't watch them ok.

Dice called me out on HR and here for liking a match. I obliged him with response. Call it thin skin if you want. Just defending myself and Hawkeye wrestling. I won't bite on your explanation of Lee's loss either..:p

Suriano always wrestles that way when the competion is good.
He had to chase Breser around all the mat also it is hard to
take shots when the guy is about 2-3 feet from you sure he is circiling but hell could do that all the time..Maybe guys should do what Brand's did one time go to center of mat sit down why chase the dude. Can tell you if Lee knee is good he will not lose to that kid again.

Edit: Also will give credit to Russell credit he wanted to wrestle with Lee went in
and tried to wrestle with him did not run run so you guys think Bressler is giving you
enter tame meant so be it..N.S. won and deserved it if he was with you he would have had to wrestled the same way all you can do if you have to chase a guy all over the mat.

you and WT are missing a few things me thinks.

The comments about the finals are warranted and a large cross section of the wrestling universe thinks the same, including many on your own board. You guys had 5 guys in the finals, kudos to that, but they contributed to the snooze fest.

I dont see anyone saying anything "bad" about the hawks from earlier on in the tournament. Actually much of the discussion in this thread about wrestling was positive for the hawks before the finals happened. Especially Lee....why??? Cause until the semis he was entertaining, ie scoring points....hand meet glove...

As someone said a week or so ago, when people stop talking about Iowa, you got a much bigger problem on your hands because that means you are irrelevant. Not a lot of talk about Cornell these days, with the exception of Yianni. Why? Because he is exciting and scoring points rest of the team not so much.

Our guy cortez gets a lot of criticism and apparently it affected him as he shhh the crowd against IU and made several statements to the press. So some talk here about a boring wrestling isnt exclusive to you guys or last night.

You have all that history you guys like to dwell on and throw in everyones face. Put in a tape of the glory days and see the difference between those teams and today. I bet you'll be more entertained by the old teams.

Midlands wasn't just weak, it was historically weak. That was the setup for some bad wrestling in the finals. Way too many guys that won't make it past the quarterfinals or possibly even the round of 12 at NCAAs in the spotlight last night. On top of that was too much of the Iowa style of collar ties or Russian ties and then push to the out of bounds fishing for a stall call with no real offensive attempts. Just an awful approach to the sport.

So are you saying as an Iowa fan that you were happy with how the finals were wrestled? I get pretty excited to watch the Midlands finals, but yesterday was like watching paint dry. Even the people in the stands looked bored out of their minds.

I agree that Lee's a better wrestler and probably doesn't lose to Bresser again, but I doubt Lee's knee had anything to do with that loss. Didn't appear to be favoring it either against Bresser or when he was lighting everyone up the day before. If something changed with his knee between Friday and Saturday, maybe he shouldn't have been out there Saturday.

I think Lee lost b/c he wasn't prepared to go toe to toe with Muhammad Ali, dancing and disengaging, and didn't have the right people in his corner (b/c he was unattached) to manage him and the ref. Credit to Bresser b/c even though he was effectively stalling, he made it tough to ding him by chewing up a lot of time when he got in on a leg, and fighting off Lee's Russian ties. But Lee didn't lose b/c he was tentative over his knee, Bresser's repetitive stop-and-start style from neutral frustrated Lee and decreased the number of chances Lee would get to tie up throughout the match. If Lee shot more, even from all that space, instead of trying to work offense from ties, Bresser's stalling would've been easier to call.
