Midlands Tournament Thread

Lee had no neutral offense which is very unusual for him. Not sure if he even took one shot in the 1st. Bresser was in deep on a single with the first 20 seconds. Lee was always coming forward though and Bresser was usually on the edge.

I thought Bresser was done as soon as he chose down. Great job.

Btw, Cole Weaver trying to make a clown out of me by making the Midlands finals.

Was Lee knee slowing him down on Day 2? I didn’t see his matches yesterday but sounded like he was on fire. Either way, Bresser definitely earned his win.

I must have watched a different match than you did.

Bresser absolutely backed up most of the second period. I thought he might get dinged with a stall warning, and probably should have, but he didn't. This isn't high school anymore, though. I saw a look in Lee's eyes I've only seen one time before and that was in the third period of the PIAA finals last March when DeSanto got the second to last TD on the edge of the mat. He had a dear in the headlights look when the time ended in the third that he had then.

He's a special talent but he is not used to losing, or being in tight matches for the most part. I mean, in his entire high school career how often did anyone ever keep it close? When Suriano beat him like 5 years ago was the last time.

I would have hit Bresser for stalling early and often, but I guess we all have style preferences. I watched Bresser do the same tactics to Fix but Fix solved it just enough.
Here is the thing about neutral stalling. Yeah, in the second period I thought Bresser deserved to be dinged for a stall, but if the other guy isn't pushing the issue it can be difficult to call that stall. Spencer was absolutely not pushing the issue.

Every time the Barger kid from Nebraska wrestles Nolf Barger runs and runs. Jason just says the hell with it and jumps in to force the action.

Spencer did nothing to force any neutral action.

The most popular excuse I'm reading thus far on HR is Bresser was stalling. Couple knee mentions and a couple, he'll learn from this.

Actually I've seen a similar response on our board to theirs. No one on either board expected it, and we all wonder if it is just a learning thing, if the knee (with brace still there) affected things, etc, etc. Similar to Mark Hall last year.

Its normal to wonder at such an amazing talent losing. Does anyone really think this means he is any less than we thought before? I certainly don't think so, and am rooting for him except when against us. I think he just needs work, and if he goes this year, it will be another Mark Hall type year.

That’s because there wasn’t.

I wasn't even considering shots. It is fairly hard to shoot at a guy backing up and much easier to shoot at a guy going forward. I'm certainly not a Hawkeye homer, but good lord how can you think wrestling that way should be allowed without being called? Okie state had a 149 that did the same crap last year- I can't stand to watch it myself.

I hope he goes too. Don't think this means he's not ready. Want him to beat NATO. Still think Suriano beats him in a tight one.

7 minutes of wrestling and Marinelli took 1 shot. He did get his takedown with that shot, but come on.

The 165 Valencia just had nothing.

You are 100% correct. Mizzu kid tried to do that to Nolf in the finals last year also, but Nolf is too skilled and has such long arms he can still get a leg almost at will. Lee does not seem to have Nolf like anti running serum.

I am not picking at the Hawks while they are down, but the Gilman vs Cruz match was another example. Cruz was in great shape so he could stay with Gilman physically, and instead of forcing Cruz to wrestle Gilman allowed him to hang around and it cost him a title.
Sorenson wrestles the same way, maintain position and wait for a mistake by the opponent. Marinelli wrestled that way against Lewis. Iowa takes advantage of their superior conditioning by maintaining positioning and waiting for a mistake or until the other kid withers physically.

If they truly want to close the gap on PSU and the two OSUs, stronger recruiting is only one step. When wrestling competition that is similar in capabilities they need to be more aggressive.

got to hand it to Flo... stepped outside and missed the match and Flo has it up already. I don't see Bresser stalling in fact it appears he took as many shots. Lee just wants to hand fight and needed to force the action. No worries though, nothing more than a lesson for young Lee.

Watched that match and then I just watched Wilke-Warner. You are 100% correct.

Marinelli wrestles as if taking ground and stalking scores points in the NCAA rules. He takes 1 or 2 shots a match against people with a pulse, and they are nice shots, but possibly they are so effective because the other guy is in shock. (a joke for you Hawk fans that contribute on here). No interest in any mat wrestling except to avoid giving up a RT. He could possibly have as nice a career as Sorenson, but doubtful as he can't ride near as well as Sorenson. You can't win NCs wrestling like that. Must be a nice kid from all accounts but boring as hell on the mat. Now some Hawk fan will pull out a fall or a lot of points against somebody ranked #27 as evidence to the contrary.

Warner looks like he has some offense, but I just watched a period where he and Wilke spent the entire 1st period 3 minutes without either guy touching his knee to the mat. I did see a bunch of stalking at the edge to keep the other guy from returning to center from both guys - they probably learned this from Marinelli. He had one shot in the 2nd which was tremendous and would have scored against most anyone - it got waved off for some reason - IDK timeout or something called just before. Wilke wins in OT after getting jobbed on a bad stall call at the buzzer, but Warner is more talented but just mystifying in that match.

Guys wrestle like this in the B&W and we are calling them Morelli and looking for them to get replaced in the lineup. They've got Kemerer who wrestles, and I'm sure Spencer will. Beyond that, nobody who is a threat on the mat (EDIT - excuse me, Sorenson is a threat to get RIDING TIME on the mat) and most look for the OOB shoot/push out as the first option to score, with an occasional pot shot high-c as second option. Third option is the 3rd period busy neutral offense looking for the stall again. Marinelli is extremely quick and has some nice shots, gets good penetration and finishes fast. Somebody should tell him that if he gets taken down the match doesn't end.

Meanwhile, Yianni goes down to Eierman, 9-4 on a short time TD and NF points. Blows up my LMS pick. (Sorry if already reported here, didn't see it. Happened a few hours ago though.)

Thinking the same thing. Bresser kept a nice pace the entire match. In and out looking for the legs. He definitely was looking to get to his offense more than Spencer was. He also wasn’t going to be pushed around like Spencer’s previous opponents. Great match and gameplan.
Does this mean Zalesky out-coached Brands?

This gem from the same dual...

Ben Darmstadt (Cor) won by major decision over #2 Willie Miklus (Mizzou), 9-0

Miklus lost another match as well. If all goes well for Cassar at the Scuffle, he will get a big boost. Jake Smith and Rotert also taking lumps.

As luck would have it, I'm sure this means Cutch beats Cassar.
