Agree and isn't espn showing the entire NCAA championships this year? Pretty sure it's espnU but still nice.

Now if only in these duals coaches wouldnt hold out their higher ranked guy in fear of a loss and hurting his standings. It flat out sucks and nothing makes a newby turn the channel faster than thinking they're going to see two top ten guys only to see a guy with a horrible record get mugged.

Closing remarks from a “fun” road trip regular season close out until the post season... so if you’ve been bored with my past musings.... I will pause for you to now hit the back button and skip this...... ok, if you’ve stuck thru you must be a glutton for more boring, inane prose... so here it goes:

1. I closed out this season’s regular-season road trips with a visit to U of Minnesota’s Maturi Pavilion. Now I did not think this was a new venue for me since I was here for the B1G tournament last year... or so I thought, but I quickly surprised myself in trying to figure out what happened to the other two sides of seating around the mat... it was then that a local sitting next to me informed me the B1Gs were in “The Barn”. It’s moments like this that I realize early retirement might not have been too early after all! (But in my own defense... both are in the same dang building and I entered the same dang door... I just didn’t know the difference between a turn to the right and a turn to the left...;))

2. The crowd was a bit subdued and did not look to be the sellout that it was on paper... but starting out with a 6-0 FF, then Energizer Bunny Roman making it 11-0, and the “feature match” Gopher getting stuck to the mat for 17-0 pretty much took all hope out of the crowd early:p... not to mention the 5-6 inches of snow that came down overnight scared folks away.

3. Now given all that snow, I would have thought that a “snow familiar” state like Minnesota would know how to deal with it... but perhaps because it was a slow, Sunday morning... there were zero snow crews clearing the roads... no exaggeration... I was surprised. But yours truly was not to be deterred, and figuring Uber would never come to get me in those conditions (or not without some outrageous “surge/snow fee”)... I bundled myself up like Ralphie’s brother in the Christmas Story and walked the 1.5 miles through the continuing blizzard conditions, uphill both ways (actually it was really flat), to get to the Pavilion! What fan dedication! :D

4. So, it’s a wrestling board, enough about the weather... only real good “inside the arena” stories not seen on TV involved my perfectly positioned seat for me to see directly into the passage way from the mat, under the stands into the locker areas (I assume). First story involves RBY... and the reason I now call him Energizer Bunny... after all that activity on the Mat (that poor kid from Minn, the 3rd period could not end fast enough for him... I one point I thought I saw him thinking about just throwing himself to his back to stop the craziness), but after Roman expended all that energy... I look over in the tunnel... light from the back hallway creating an RBY silhouette, and he is doing jumping jacks, burpees, push ups, well into the 141 match and not just warm down speed, but full speed. I’m telling you fellow fans, Roman can taste the top of that podium in March... and he’s giving it his all even off the mat!:)

5. Next was Verk... if you had any doubts that that he left it all on the mat... as he started to walk back the tunnel, which sloped upward a bit, as he began to climb it, he just faded against the wall of the tunnel in pure exhaustion with the S&C guys helping him... not making any judgment on that (others are much better at that than am I ) it is something that watching on TV you likely didn’t see.

6. As for the officiating, I for one did not really have any complaints (for a change) and no real surprise in the arena... even Coach Eggum behaved himself, but again... the blowout score early might have washed away their competitive emotions a bit. :p

7. Fortunately I did not have a Mr Clipboard beside me today... but I did have Tom Talksalot sitting there chewing my ear off as I tried to watch the matcho_O... he was a nice man whose family “founded” Somerset,PA and then after the Civil War (oh yes, I got the whole family history) moved to Minnesota. The only reason I even mention this gentleman Is twofold:

a) at 17-0 he told me to not get too comfortable in that lead because Gable could close that gap quickly with 6pt fall. (I did not have the heart to tell him I’ve never seen Gable work that hard for extra team points... and oh, we still, had 165,174,& 184 ”in reserve”):D

b) he said “there’s not a bad seat” in US Bank Stadium so don’t worry about Nationals... well, everyone else with whom I’ve spoken on this topic seams to place him squarely in the minority opinion! :(

well, sorry... this post got longer than I wanted... but it could be my last when you all figure out that I only missed two road duals this year... ASU & Iowa... hmm, what do those two have in common? Could it be, I’m the “road trip lucky charm”?

I’m going to go with “yes” and next year I’ll set a GoFundMe page for all of you to contribute to in order to make sure I get to all away duals next year for a perfect record again!

Always a good read. Keep them coming.

How about if they would have both shirted their freshman year and Nick was only a Soph at this level and RBY was a freshman at his current level. That's why when guys start yammering about pulling shirts for team points now, you need to look at the big points you are missing down the road.
If Nick Lee redshirts in 2017-18, PSU doesn't win the NCAA title over tOSU (the best 2nd place NCAA team ever) and Nickal's dramatic pin of Martin doesn't clinch the title for PSU. Instead, it's Snyder's win over Coon that wins the title for tOSU.

PSU probably still wins in 2019 without Nick Lee and/or RBY, but we sure as hell needed Lee's 5th place finish and 11.5 points in 2018. So, yeah, I'm glad Nick Lee did not RS in 2017-18. And you should be too.

I think you get a prize for using an emoji after almost every paragraph! Seriously, posts like these with things most don't see are the one's that interest me most. Thanks!

Stevenson IMO, took a step back this year. He wasn’t aggressive at all. Seth’s shots were not very good at all and I kept thinking can he get in the strength and conditioning program by using football’s strength coach. Clearly he will need to grow into the position and work on shots. If he does get strength then watch out. Cassar would have crushed Stevenson this week.

Rasheed still looked like he is all over the place. After that first shot he went back to what he was doing over the past couple of weeks. Nothing.

Lee and rby are really exciting to watch and give us a chance this year at ncaas if they keep doing what they are doing. Mark hall seems to be tired. It looked like he was sick on Friday. Brooks still growing which is nice and getting experience with every match.

You walked to the arena thru the snow. You did know that a subway line runs between downtown and the Minny campus, right? :D

Just ragging on you. Great read. Sounds like you enjoyed the trip in spite of it being February.

Fans of other programs despise PSU but I don't see how anyone could not like Nick

For me, it is jealousy and envy that, for the most part, they express.
Can’t imagine the juvenile attacks on “ Carl,” by the Iowa board, if they had won the last x years of NCAA.
A very unattractive human trait ( envy and jealousy).
Seven deadly sins, still are.

I thought that this team had potential champions in Cenzo, Hall, and Cassar early in the season, Then Cassar went down, and I thought all was lost for this year.

But then, Lee and RBY have emerged as potential top-of-the-podium wrestlers, so I am optimistic that Penn State can pull it out at nationals again this year.

With the exodus at 141, I had Nick penciled in also, the monkey wrench is Pletcher, but I think Nick is still the fave.

Ahh, but you did say this, "uphill both ways", so you did infer at least that you also walked back.

Just messing with you, loved reading the posts and getting the first hand feel. One of these days I will work in a visit to an away meet.
I did have a possible new customer in Iowa and was trying to get them to insist that I come out for a visit on Jan 30th, but couldn't get it to fly. I travel semi-regularly for work but most appointments are Tuesday-Thursday, and there are not many wrestling meets then... or woman's volleyball either.

I almost got a 2-week trip to PHX coinciding with the ASU-Stanford match. It was at a critical time in the program execution. Program executive (who owns funding) approved. Functional director approved.

But direct boss rejected it, said my travel needs to coincide with a customer mtg. (Next customer mtg there won't be until at least June/July if at all, and the program ends 10/1.)

So much for that.

Hah! Get this one. I marked the PSU/ASU dual on my calendar as soon as they announced the date. About 3-4 days before the dual, I came down with a cold and ended up having to spend the weekend staying home to recover. Really sucks because I very rarely catch colds anymore. Hopefully PSU will be back West again next season.

I think it's a bit inaccurate to Gable wasn't aggressive in that match. To me it felt as if he never thought he needed to be. He reminds me of Mark Hall in that he looked totally calm, I'd dare say, almost bored when he and Seth got in the one collar tie where Seth's right and Gable's left arm were hanging loose. He knew Seth couldn't do anything to him and my take is that he decided to get an easy win and go home without breaking a sweat

It's a stretch to say Gable's taken a step back given the fact that he very nearly beat Gwiz about six months ago for the world team spot. I'd still favor Cassar if the two of them wrestled, but I guarantee we'd see a different energy level from Gable if that's who we trotted out to face him.

I don't think anyone in NCAA (Mason has the only chance of proving me wrong) has any chance of beating Gable this year, or even really testing him.

Gable has bigger goals than winning an NCAA title and I wouldn't be shocked if he coasted through a great number of matches just as he did last night in an attempt to avoid some freak injury that might hobble him come trials, or for some other reason we can't divine.

To toot my own horn, I was early on the Nick Lee bandwagon. :D However, Real Woods might also have a say in how NCAAs play out, and Demas can present match-up problems.
Lee will beat anyone in his way, anytime. Keep trotting them out though

Not a lot of middle ground with you - Nick’s the second coming and Shak’s the anti-Christ. ;)
Shak is an amazing wrestler who has had too many injuries and is wrestling up a weight. I never said anything different about this. I'm in favor of pulling beards shirt. I want very badly to be wrong.

ESPN/2/U has had every session of NCAAs for at least the last 3 or 4 years. Also has all mats covered for all sessions via ESPN+ streaming...
