Nationals Scuttlebutt and Rumors

Where's John Doe when you need him to sort all of this out? lol. The off season will be very interesting to see how things play out. Side note where does this years graduating class rank among classes? Nolf, Bo, Cassar totaled 7 championships. Maybe more?

I know a few posters (and other fans) have been concerned before about how some of our redshirting/greyshirting kids look at open tournaments and conclude they aren't on the path to become hammers (Joe Lee, Brody Teske) because Nolf/Nickal for the most part looked ready to AA as true freshman. Zain beat Stieber his true freshman year and was clear 2nd or 3rd best at that weight but his bonus rate was also (gasp) 39%. I know Ruth/DT both took Losses redshirting.

Is that kind of an overreaction? I feel to expect HS kids to come in and just walk over the competition is unrealistic. College competition is college competition end of the day. Just a year and a half ago, Anthony Cassar (as a RS JR) lost to Garrett Hoffman and now he's a heavyweight champion. Didn't Bo Nickal lose to Andy McCulley his redshirting year before becoming a 4x finalist and 3x champ?
Of course it's an overreaction.

A lot of people look at what Taylor, Ruth, Zain, Jason, and Bo have done, and think that everyone else should be able to do it too. As if all-timers merely fall off trees in State College.

OTOH, one guy who had an outstanding year on the Opens circuit: Ke-Shawn Hayes.

He won't be at 125 ever for PSU -- he wrestled 126 this year as a HS JR.

And I don't care if he's 133 or 141 or gets bigger yet, he'll be tremendous in blue/white.

It's interesting because we have our all timers like those you listed above but we have so many outstanding wrestlers who were national champs but aren't in that conversation that it's crazy to think about: Quentin Wright, Nico, Frank, Matt Brown and it seems like Hall, Cenzo are getting lumped more into that category. Can ultimately see Lee and RBY being there as well. Looks like Cassar just entered that category as well. This isn't even including the non champions like Morgan McIntosh either.

It's crazy how so many national champions can get lost in the shuffle here when you see how schools like Rutgers and Northern Iowa reacted to them getting theirs.

When he withdrew from school in December, it was announced that this year would be a grayshirt unless he competed varsity in the spring.
Appreciate the clarification. Was he not taking classes? If he was, Did they get those expunged? Is it not delayed enrollment?

Not smart enough about the specific mechanics of this. Assuming he did a full withdrawal from the university and that sufficed.

In general, grayshirts can take classes below full-time status. IDK if the cutoff is 6 or 9 credits or something else. But that's what Cornell has been doing seemingly forever by sending kids to the nearby community college while they train at FLWC.

Makes sense. Good info. Thanks.

It’s about having options when making the decision on what to do next. Have to think with Rasheed he has to think about the cost of one more year, if his body can take another year of D1 wrestling and if he wants to start his next chapter but at least he has all the options open to him when he sits down to think about in a couple months
I can see that .Nice to have options. I can see cassar coming back because he missed two full years. He is such a great guy for this team. Great leader .I hope he comes back he looked awesome at Nationals and will only get better

very easy for me to believe.
I guess what I'm looking at is when they applied for the sixth year some sort of decision went into it .at that point there was no way of knowing that he would win a national title. Did he make some sort of agreement with Cael that if I get the sixth year and no title I come back but if I win I'm gone regardless if I get the sixth year .doesn't make much sense .But hey nice problem to have .I see your point as well

That is what I have been told also. He only took a partial load of classes. Either way, I wish he went elsewhere.

One big factor could be Cassar's freestyle weight -- and he may not have decided that yet.

If he wants to go 97 kg / 213 lb, then returning is a matter of how he values NCAA titles, his role with the team, etc. But then his lifting and eating routine would need to be modified.

If he wants to go 125 kg / 275 lb, then another year in college isn't a bad idea. He would probably want to gain another 10-15 lb to compete with athletic bigger guys like Akgul (who's 265). Maybe more if he can without sacrificing his quickness.

Robbie Howard. Sported his Penn State gear on Saturday to my relief. Seemed like a great family from 2 rows away. I didn’t want to bother them but was happy to see his enthusiasm.

Sat near him and his family for all 6 sessions. Very nice young man with wonderful parents. He’ll be
a great addition to the Penn State family.

Knowing what I know, he likely didn’t achieve more than 6-9 credit hours on his college transcripts his enrollment may be different.

Newest chapter in the 3 inch binder: recruit them, let them flip and develop elsewhere for a year, then bring them back.

Collusion ... Teasdale was ‘a plant’by Iowa to come in ... learn the inner workings of Cael, Casey and Cody’s ‘secrets of success’ AND how ‘the slush fund’ actually works ... then report back to Iow to add to ‘the 3 inch binder’ dossier

He'd also have to spend some time in the office of the person who makes everything possible - Sandy Barbour. She's a genius.:eek:o_O

PSU's secret sauce is the year-end prep and "tapering" they do to peak at the right time. Teasdale wasn't here long enough to read that far ahead. Heck, he wasn't in SC long enough to make it past the foreword.

yep, Howard. You must have been almost directly behind me as I was in the same row. I did tell him that I look forward to watching him in a PSU singlet. Suriano was warming up (prior to two separate sessions) in the mat in front of us and made eye contact and gesture each time to Robbie. Also, it appeared he was rooting for Rivera over Glory in the consi's.

i saw kurt mchenry while waiting for the T on friday night to get back to our car. someone coming down the stairs started a WE ARE chant and, while most of the responses were PENN STATE, kurt's response was a loud SHUT UP! made me laugh.

Think Hayes will drop 2 weights?
Yeah but I don’t have any inside knowledge on that RodMac on the 247 board is pretty plugged into the program and he seems to believe the same. I think 141 would be Hayes best shot at the line up as well as finishing off his career on the podium. I’ve also always believed 141 was his natural weight class

NY. You were pretty dialed in on Shaq back when he came on board. Any incite to any injury. Also. Does he want to come to PSU for his 6th, if he got it ? Or try somewhere else.

I guess since the season is over now I can say that I was told he wrestled the back half of the season with a torn ACL. He’s been pretty adamant since before this season started he wanted to be back for a 6th year should he get it he loves it at PSU

You could tel when he lost in the 2nd round that something was amiss. He looked confused or something. It’s when I realized the leg was a bigger deal than we knew. It’s a shame. A healthy leg and he is top 5 184lb’r with a good shot to be in that title match

You could tell the knee was a major issue long before the post season. Shak wasn't wearing that huge brace for show.

I spoke to a very nice Wisconsin insider this weekend, has a personal relationship with Barry and bono, and runs a Wisconsin wrestling website. Told me gross still unsure of where he ends up. Also saw facundo walking around with Carr
