NCAA Session 6 Thread

What's the scoop with Beitz and Moss? Are they still around and in the mix? Beitz looks like he might be blocked out but moss at 141 would work.

I loved the way Morgan handled his loss. It must be very difficult to show that kind of sportsmanship at such a difficult time. Most wrestlers provide a perfunctory handshake to satisfy the rule as they walk away.

Credit to Cox as well for the respect he showed Morgan.

He's not a Heavy though in Free and the International/Olympic Events...

Actually, Angle and Snyder both wrestled/wrestle in the same classification in Freestyle, which is typically called heavyweight. The difference is that when Angle wrestled, the weight limit was 100kg. Now, for Snyder, the limit is 97kg.

Superheavyweight is the next class up, which is currently 125kg.

As far as quality of the matches, IMO these Finals were the best in the last 10-15 years. Before cable and Internet you had to go in person to see.

Yes, sort of I guess. Olympic/International Wrestling traditionally had 10 weight classifications in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman. The highest weight-class +100 kg was unlimited but traditionally referred to as "Heavyweight". 100 kg is ~220 lbs. This weight classification was not traditionally referred to as "Heavyweight" which was only used for +100 kg because it was an "unlimited" weight class traditionally while all the other weight classes were bound by the weight classification title (e.g., 100 kg). Then they changed the upper weight class and bound it at 130 kg (~287 lbs), I can't remember the exact year this was done but around 1980 if I remember correctly. They still called the 130 kg class "heavyweight" by tradition even though it was no longer "unlimited" and could just as easily be called by its classification, 130 kg - they made no changes to the 100 kg Class. Later, they again changed the weight classifications such that 100 kg was reduced to 97 kg and 130 was reduced to 125 kg (~276 lbs). Around this time is when people started using the terminology of HWT and Super HWT for 97 kg and 125 kg classifications.

Angle never wrestled in the highest weight classifications in International competitions, he competed at 100 kilos. People think of him as a "heavyweight" because that is the weight classification that he won an NCAA Championship at. If Kurt Angle himself is to be believed, he claims that he weighed slightly under 200 lbs when he wrestled and won the NCAA HWT Championship (up to 275 lbs at the time I believe) for Clarion. I find it hard to believe, but Angle swears it is true....IOW, Angle could have probably wrestled the next lower NCAA weight classification much easier but chose, and wanted, to wrestle HWT giving up a full weight classification because that is what he wanted to do.

This is absolutely correct. Another guy on the board who knows the sport.

I-Mar recording the only "clean" TD in their 1st Match before gassing was what scared me about the rematches if he "slowed it down" and conserved his energy. The first re-match some of the slowdown tactics were bull$hit and should not have been permitted. But tonight was the precise match that really scared me from the first match....I-Mar slowed it down, but played "strategic offense" to conserve energy, but J-No was not able to consistently dent I-Mar's "head-hands" change of levels defense and therefore he could not successfully tire and wear I-Mar down - Jason came oh-so close on the throw, he just lost control of him as he delivered him to the mat because I-Mar is so strong....he's like a "snake" in that regard, very, very strong and hard to hold in a position (you could see it in his Gramby Rolls at end of 1st as well - that escape point with 2 seconds remaining in the 1st was huge and could have been the difference in the match had I-Mar not got them. But I-Mar wrestled a terrific strategic match offensively in neutral to conserve his energy, but initiated enough of the attacks such that he wasn't really exclusively passive either. I-Mar wrestled an excellent strategic match and his slightly better ability to execute "clean TDs" (e.g., ultra-quick finish with no scramble needed) was the difference in the match.

And here I was thinking you were just an obnoxious homer, then you go and surprise me!
