New OC Candidates

Knowing Franklin's decision making, it will be a promotion from within. Bowen or Seider.
If he makes an outside hire, it needs to be an established, experienced guy who the current staff will respect. The fear in hiring a young hotshot up-and-comer is that he’ll rub people the wrong way (who does this guy think he is!!) and could run off valuable assistants. Franklin always says he’s looking to hire someone who is the right fit.

Why do you say Brady isn’t coming here? Brady is only co-defensive coordinator at LSU, and he could potentially run the show here at Penn State.

Ranger. I too would be shocked if Brady came here simply because I think he will be the beneficiary of a bidding war between Texas ands LSU. Those two schools kind of have a competition thing. You know ... "who has the bigger di#@". From what I hear Texas will go after Brady. Just from a pride thing, LSU will not want him going to Texas, so they will most likely anti-up and match. There is a good chance Brady benefits from Texas and LSU getting into an ego driven bidding war for him.

Now, IMO the one variable that helps us is returning talent. I admit that I do NOT know what Texas or LSU has returning. I know LSU loses Burrow, a few OL, and at least 1 of their stud WRs. Losing Burrow alone means breaking in a new QB. I am not sure what Texas loses or returns. But I do know that IF Hammier returns this is a Penn State Offense that only loses 1 Starter (Gonzalez) and a back-up TE. Other than losing a starting OG and a back-up TE, a new Offensive Coordinator is looking at falling into a deep returning roster..... This is definitely a consideration.

Penn State would not match LSU & Texas in their bidding war. But, in a strategical move to keep looking "smart" would Brady be willing to sacrifice a little money, to slide right into a veteran offense where he'd continue to look "smart". ?????? I personally doubt it, but it's our selling point.

Does coach Seider have desires to be an OC? If we bring someone in, will we lose him and his south Florida recruiting ties?

We "might" lose his S. FL recruiting ties, but what ties would a new OC bring in???

I know we are NOT getting Brady but use him for this example..... We hire Brady... Seider gets mad and leaves (a negative)... But Brady is the hottest name in college football and how many recruits from around the country would want to play in a system they just saw at LSU(a positive).

Again, I know we are not getting Brady, just using as an example. But do not forget, any coach we "lose" because they get mad and leave, would be off-set by the new guy coming in. Imagine Brady going into Caleb Williams' home next week and saying to Caleb Williams "You come to Penn State and I can make you the next Joe Burrow".

Will the new OC also have to be the QB coach or will they reshuffle responsibilities among the current staff?

The bidding war for Joe Brady will start around $1.5MM, which is the rumored number of LSU's contract offer.

Rich Rod return to the B1G?

Chad Morris?

Tony Elliot: CO-OC at Clemson. Would be at the top of my list.

David Yost: OC TT... at least the dbag Dave Peterson will have someone else to write letters too.;)

Graham Harrell: OC at USC. He has to think the writing is on the wall for the entire staff.

Whomever it is I hope they have some QB coaching experience as well. I thought we were lacking in that dept.

Reports say Harrell interviewed at U of Texas last week. So it appears he is approachable. Gettysburg native and Clemson QB coach Brandon Streeter is a coach whose stock is soaring. He is probably in line to be promoted to Co OC coach at Clemson. If he isnt, would love to see him on the PSU staff.

Andrew Breiner..........Bet the Farm
Young, knows the system, from the Northeast/Recruiting.

Franklin has recruited so many high character kids, that his only option is to hire Pat Narduzzi. While he is at it, he could bring in Wanny, Todd Graham and some other ex-Pitt coaches to make a dream team.

If he did this for these reasons, I’d think he lacked confidence in his abilities. Why would we sell “in case you’re doubting yourself, we have the talent to make you look smart”?

Good call on Brandon Streeter. I think that would be a good choice.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe he's ever been a play caller? Not to say he wouldn't be up to the task, just not to keen on an inexperienced offensive coordinator...

Looks like he has play calling experience as he was the OC at Richmond and Liberty before going to Clemson

OK, so I will chime in.

The OC should be an aggressive playcaller, and should have strong recruiting ties to fertile recruiting areas- mid Atlantic, South, Texas or California. Whether the OC is from Pa or the Northeast is simply immaterial. Just because a guy grew up in Gettysburg, PA does not make him a better candidate than a guy who grew up in Sumter, SC.

I know you say it jokingly and I’m not seriously suggesting it but I’d bet he could be had as a consultant pretty easily. He has no desire to work much but wants to coach some - look at the Orlando AAF team. Yes, I know he can’t coach as a consultant but he’d still be around the game and only have to work half the time.

The week after he resigned at South Carolina he was at Beaver Stadium for the Penn State game - still unsure of how that happened.

Trivia for the Day: Spurrier already has a relative (of sorts) who was head ball coach at Penn State. His wife' (Jerri) great uncle was Rip Engle. He also would be the second head coach at Florida in a row that would become OC at PSU. His immediate successor was Galen Hall. So it probably won't happen because that's just too close to Joe somehow.

Breiner sucks. He took over Moorhead’s machine at Fordham and promptly ran it into the ground. He was about to be fired at Fordham until Joe swooped in and offered him a job at Miss State.

Scott makes $1mm and is a Clemson lifer.

Yost make $300k. Harrell was offered $300k to stay at North Texas. Who knows how much he's making at USC? They offered Kingsbury a mil to take the job.

How many co-OCs cana team have? Three might be a crowd.

Streeter is also a Clemson alum and has been there for over ten years. With a current salary of $500k, he should be affordable.

There are a lot of really good offensive minds out there who currently occupy jobs lesser than the PSU OC job.

Steve Spurrier
Jim McMahon
Mike Martz
Scott Frost
Charlie Weis
Lou Holtz
Art Briles
Phil Jackson

Who was the OC for Joe Mo before he came to PSU? I seem to recall it being a former QB for Joe Mo? Where is he now?
Breiner, but he wasn’t really an OC. Joe called all the plays and designed the entire offense. Fordham took a huge step backward when Breiner took over for Joe. Franklin is way too smart to hire Breiner.

Breiner was a WR at Lock Haven by the way and is from the Harrisburg area. He got connected with Joe at UCONN when he was a GA and followed him to Fordham and now Miss State.
