New OC Candidates

The Burrow/Brady argument is tough - Joe Burrow wasn't the same QB last season. LSU scored 0 points against Bama last season.

I expect CJF has a short list which probably includes members of the current staff.
I would not be surprised to see him pick from within and almost immediately also announce a new coaching hire that fills the void left.

See I would be surprised to see him promote from within. Perception is reality and when he lost Fields due to Moorhead moving on, and Fleming didn't see himself in this offense Franklin knows that he needs to get a coach that will resonate with the recruits and their families. If he chooses someone with little to no experience - or no name recognition - he's likely to lose some of the blue chippers we've pulled in and current recruits.

Perhaps he returns to play calling.

Then he'll wait till after early signing period.

I guess that would have eliminated Moorhead.

Brady--GA here in 15-16
Ciarrocca--from PA..went to Juniata
Glesson--led an offense in a major Conference

I would think it would need to be one of those three. He's gotta pick an experienced guy or someone that the staff members will respect.

I’d want him back. Not that he’s likely even gonna be available.

I'd take Moorhead back in a second. I don't know why he's not more appreciated -- the guy created a productive offense out of what Penn State had in 2016 -- a barely B10-level offensive line, a bevy of tall physical receivers, a mobile QB and a versatile running back.

Now Penn State has a different talent mix -- an experienced and physically capable OL, a bevy of talented running backs, a great TE, unproven talent at wideout and a mobile QB. Moorhead would make a terrific offense out of this group.

I would also take back Josh Gattis in a second if he wanted to escape the weirdness of Harbaugh and come back and compete for playoffs at PSU.

But anyway I agree, Franklin has been planning on a new OC for probably longer than anybody realizes. He's got plan A through plan Z already sketched out. This will be a well thought out hire and I would think, after the experience with Rahne, that this time Franklin will want someone who has had proven success in this job. And presumably he has enough budget to hire someone with proven success.

It's not like it's that hard to randomly choose between 4 plays:

1) QB Keeper
2) RB up the middle
3) Quick slant to Freiermuth
4) Fade to Hamler

images

Ever notice on those plays, they dont have all 11 bodies on the field. Illegal formations like crazy...

I'll leave the my final negative thoughts of Rahne here:

You could never feel confident with Rahne as OC going into a big game.

honestly, aside from JoMo...in the past 20-30 years have you EVER felt confident with an OC going into a big game? it's been at least 30 years for me.

In the past, I believe he has waited until the coaches convention. Maybe that was just for outside hires. I do believe that it has to be posted for some period of time.

when do you all think Penn State will announce the new coach? Early signing day is likely out of the question. Before the bowl game? Before final signing day?

I think they’ll announce who will run the offense at the bowl game relatively soon, as it will probably be someone internally. If CJF feels they have the right person currently on staff, they’ll announce the promotion at that time. If not, I’d say it will be about a week before because I would think they want recruits to know who is going to be running the offense before they sign on early signing day.

The case against Rahne is statistical and qualitative.

Statistical: PSU had top 15, certainly top 20 offensive talent this year, and it had the No. 1 most important ingredient, a solid offensive line. So to produce an offense ranked #82 in yards per game just isn't acceptable.

Subjective: 1) Good offenses have a good time. Against Moorhead the players had fun. In big games they enjoy making big plays. And against overmatched opponents they enjoy scoring at will. PSU played tight much of the year -- after Maryland, probably their best game, they kind of regressed instead of moving forward. And they played the Rutgers game like it was a dentist appointment.

2) Just look at the incredibly limited playbook PSU ran and compare it to other top college teams. Look at the kind of plays Ryan Day runs at tOSU runs, the level of sophistication compared with PSU's offense this year. No comparison. Even allowing for an inexperienced QB (who wasn't that experienced given it was his third year in the program) it's inexecusable to have a passing game that was so limited and most of the time only threw the ball to two people.

When Rahne actually did get the ball to Ricky Slade in space, great things happened. But they couldn't do much of it because the team hadn't learned to run screens. So most of the time Rahne had Ricky Slade run between the tackles, which is not why Ricky Slade was a 5 star running back.

Not developing Shorter/George on the outside was a huge huge mistake, some of us were screaming about it early in the season but the PSU beat writers only picked up on it later. They didn't have an outside passing game when they needed it (the hyperagressive blitzing Minnesota D). Last year Franklin blamed the receivers, replaced the wideouts coach, but they got the same result -- an underdeveloped and primitive passing game run by players who played tentatively -- Shorter played tentatively because he just hasn't gotten enough reps catching the ball.

Everybody here on the board could see that Clifford was forcing the ball to Hamler and Friermuth (and sometimes Dotson) because he didn't have rapport with any other receivers. So when defenses bracketed Hamler (Minny) and Friermuth (tOSU) they got interceptions and stops. It was Rahne's job to to make sure the ball got spread around, to make sure PSU had an outside passing game as well as an inside one.

IIRC JoMo was evaluating players and stuff during bowl prep...so I'd bet the new guy does the same

Just those three? Guess they don’t need to hire a search firm. This forum has it covered. LOL.

For sure. He was here and gone so quickly, that his name didn't come to mind.

He was here as long as Moorhead. Funny how that works.

Good post. I also hated the HALF GAME lulls (e.g. Purdue, Michigan) where we couldn't get a first down to save our lives - tiring out the defense after multiple 3 and outs. Other teams were better at making in-game adjustments. Purdue was substantially outmanned. Michigan ran out of time, though they did their best to take advantage of our second-half turtle routine.

And spare me the "scoreboard" bullshit. When push comes to shove, style points factor in to the equation.

My biggest question is on timing of the new hire. Does Franklin hire a new OC before the early signing period? Would a “big” name flip recruits or do we lose a few recruits with the new hire?

We aren’t going to lose any. After the HC, recruits care most about their position coach which affects one player. Doubt we flip any for the same reason.

I did a little research and FWIW:

Donovan was fired on 11/29/2015 and Moorhead was hired on 12/12/2015
Moorhead left on 11/28/2017 and Rahne was named OC on 12/1/2017

So if the pattern continues I'd expect a new OC to be announced some time in the next 2 weeks.

Read the 5 pages from Dec 2015 yourself. Besides the usual folks who are/were consistently negative and bitch about about any and all things Penn State or Franklin does, many were on board with the hire.
The usual negative folks here are about 33 to 50 percent. It might be higher when CJF chooses from within or an "unknown." to the experts here. I'm looking forward to the eruption.
