New portal entries

Much bigger news from Ohio State standpoint is that it appears that Jim Knowles is seriously negotiating with Oklahoma to become their defensive coordinator. His girlfriend has two children in college in Oklahoma and does not want to move to ohio. There seems to be real smoke here because apparently the girlfriend and Knowles sister have posted about the negotiations on Twitter.

He would be a real loss. OSU 'S current troubles against Michigan began when Ryan Day elevated Kerry Combs to defensive coordinator partially as a reward for his great work as defensive backs coach. Combs was way out of his League and the defense was horrible when he was coordinator and he had to be fired in the middle of the year. When Ryan Day hires from outside his current OSU assistants he does well,. For instance, Jeff Hafley was a really good defensive coordinator prior to the hiring of Combs.

The 11 warriors website has a couple of threads on this.

I have a Buckeye friend that goes ballistic every time Combs name is brought up

ND WR Deion Colzie
OSU CB Carnell Tate

Any PSU interest? Can we afford them?
I hate to rain on the parade, but word in Columbus is if Tate goes anywhere, it's Oregon. His girlfriend plays soccer at Oregon and the Ducks have lost their two top receivers from 2024 team. And, Phil Knight loves to spend money on Ducks' football. Time will tell.

It's being reported that Tate is fielding offers of $1 million to jump and J. Smith in the neighborhood of $4.5 million to enter portal. And, DC Jim Knowles is reportedly negotiating to jump to Oklahoma for the same position. Knowles has a girlfriend who lives in Oklahoma and apparently she doesn't want to move with her two kids to Ohio.

Chicks rule!! Lake looking to Oregon where his girl resides…
So Oregon can lowball him. Does he know that his girlfriend will end up costing him money?

Jeremiah Smith just reiterated his loyalty to OSU, so that's not happening. Tate could enter the portal, but sounds like a very good chance he's back. And even if he leaves, he's not coming here. Oregon, Tennessee, and Texas seem to be in pursuit.

Yea, Tate seems to be the one "iffy" OSU player right now but fortunately for OSU, WR is a position that they have 4 and 5 star players stacked deep. I think their next breakout-star WR - next year - could be that Innis kid as he's really played well backing up the 3 OSU starters in 2024

Any idea if PSU might shell out money and pursue Tate? That sure would help the PSU WR room - BIGTIME

Isn’t offering players money before they enter the portal tampering?

It is. But it's happening everywhere. Oregon reportedly offered Jeremiah Smith $5 million. Ryan Day made a mistake not running up the score on Oregon.

There are no guardrails here. At all. This is the new world we live in. The NCAA is in no position to enforce anything.

To be more exact, Uncle Phil offered Jeremiah Smith $5 million

Doubt that it has any influence. However he would have to evaluate how good Fleming was playing and how good the PSU scheme is. Unfortunately for OSU, he would get more balls from Allar than he would from Sayin at OSU. Wouldn't be surprised if USC makes a push for him.

On OSU side, the 4th receiver, Innis is a five star, and has said that Ryan Day is the best coach in college football. Not like very good players won't be stepping in for Tate if he leaves.
With all due respect, how could Innis evaluate all CFB coaches?

Tate would be a huge addition to PSU. He's a bigtime talent

Eh, he was never realistic. If he was going to leave Hartline for money, which was unlikely in the first place, then it would be for a pass-happy system like Oregon or maybe Texas. Not for this offense and a WR coach that is having enormous problems developing a WR threat.

People are oversimplifying NIL. A lot of these kids are driven by money, but it's not ONLY money. It's money + the right environment. A tight end or defensive back or edge rusher would have great reasons to come to Penn State. A stud WR? That's a hard sell. And now we're in a vicious cycle. Poor WR production = poor WR recruiting. Poor WR recruiting = poor WR production.

You hit the nail on the head. All of those star OSU WRs just love Hartline. He's only 38 and still possesses a few of his NFL skills. He's not a talk only WR coach. His players will tell you that he actually shows them how it's suppose to be done with his skills and pushes them hard

All of those 1st round WRs from the last 3 or 4 years will tell you how glad they were to play for Hartline and couldn't have imagined playing for anyone else. He has to be the top position coach-recruiter in the country

I think Cornell Tate is unlikely to leave. Following the OSU win he was smoking a cigar near Brian Hartline and stated to Hartline make sure you don't go nowhere.

Saw this in cleveland.com.

You are correct. Sadly at this point we have no shot at a guy the caliber of Tate via portal or a high school recruit. It takes more than a bag full of money like does the WR group have a pulse and can I legitimately make the NFL from this program by being developed and coached up? The answer is a resounding "No".

Just look at who we have gotten out of the portal for WR and their rankings. Look at who we have missed at WR from high school over the last couple of years. We are no where close to a program where an elite WR would want to come or even a very good WR.

We have a glaring position group weakness and better get used to the fact that what we have at WR is what we will start the season with. No miracle is coming. Maybe we are better than last season but how much better? I have serious doubts that the group will be significantly improved since we have the same WR coach. Maybe with a new scheme and no Tyler Warren it forces AK to feature the WRs more but that doesn't mean they are good or we will have a pulse with a WR vertical passing game. I would like to think the new portal guys are difference makers but I thought this with Cephus and McClain then I thought it with Fleming. I thought for sure between Wallace, Evans, Saunders we have a bona fide #1. Nope. We have become a really poor WR room team, no other way to say it. Brutal facts. At this point the question is could we ever beat an Oregon or Ohio State or seriously challenge for a natty with a 3rd rate, lower half of the B10 WR group? I don't think so. Too critical of a group. That would be analogous to if we had a terrible O-Line.

All the more reason to lean into our running game and use the 2023 Michigan model instead of the 2024 Ohio State model.

We have the backs and the OL to be the best ground game in the country. Our defense may not be 2023 Michigan level, but complementary football goes a long way and our defense will be good enough.

Michigan had crappy WRs and won a title. It can happen. Is it difficult? Absolutely. Impossible? No. Our TEs will be good as always.

Michigan had Roman Wilson at WR who was better than any of ours. He could come up with some big catches and make contested catches.

You said it, our defense is not as good. We also have the Franklin and team factor of not being clutch in clutch moments. Remember Michigan in the semifinal game in the Rose Bowl vs Bama and Saban? Everyone thought they were cooked and they came up clutch. Just don't think we have the mental fortitude to do something like that.

Ultimately I don't see us being able to power run and TE heavy our way to a deep playoff run or a natty.
