Observation: Almost all negative posts blaming/calling out CJF since yesterday

You should save this and repost it in the middle of all the seasons JF is still HC at PSU, because he’s reached his maximum potential. Saturday was was abomination, should never happen under a guy getting paid 7.5 million a year. He’s not doing his f’n job!!!!!

Lose 2 games and they turn on a dime. And yes, I realize there is almost no excuse for losing to Illinois.
However
From my perspective, CJF is the hardest working coach in college football and recruiting is 90% of what it takes to win. If Justin Fields stayed with us, everything would have turned out totally different the past few years.

We would have won a lot more games and other elite QB's and elite players all around would have followed.

Its a very slippery slope. I think with next years class (especially the QB's) PSU future is very bright.
Be careful what you wish for.

There have been numerous articles about them. @Nate Bauer/BWI Staff, in particular has laid out the reasons.
And if you haven't read any of them how would you know they are excuses?
Maybe stop acting like a spoiled child when some one tries to help you out.
Easy Skippy…excuses are for spoiled, entitled children. Adults require accountability.

I know some guys that haven't liked Franklin from the beginning. I think a big part of the issue is his personality being the complete opposite of Joe's. My wife's cousin's husband told me at a wedding last week that he'd take Ferentz as our coach in a second. I suspect 75% of the haters here would as well, even if that means winning 9 games a season the Ferentz way and going to a NYE bowl every once in a while.
Ferentz the guy who said our players were faking injuries. You think he is like Joe? He would win 7 games a year in the East and fans and the malcontents would turn on him year two

You are certainly doing your best entitled, spoiled brat impression so carry on.

Hardly. This is year 8. Most rationale observers are patient. But eventually their must be rationale accountability. How many more Illinois games are going to be tolerated before adults say “enough.”
Posters were calling for his head during year two….there aren’t many rational posters on this board. So one Illinois game wipes out all the 11 win seasons…got it. We can’t tolerate that, we deserve better.

It’s not one result. It is a body of work and a trajectory…the beginning of the decommits has begun…so it is likely to snowball this weekend. It would be nice to know that adults are having under the radar conversations if “what it will take” for some worthwhile targets. 7-5 is our ceiling…coupled with 4-5 and with Top-15 talent? Changes are required.

It is time.
You’re worried about possible decommits yet you want to fire him….the brilliance is astounding.

It's nothing but brilliance. Most posters would hate all of the candidates they love if some of their results followed them here.

Matt Campbell would turn things around if he were here and never lose to a sun belt team while ranked like he did at Iowa State. He'd finally beat Kirk Ferentz even though he's currently 0-6 against Iowa at Iowa State.

We love Quarterbacks and Coaches that aren't here but should be.

He usually doesn't win close games where the talent level is equalized and he basically never wins in an upset. And yes I understand we are not an underdog often but we seemingly never win when we are. O$U in 2016 sny others?

Look at our record since 2016. Even when we beat O$U he manages to eff it up and not get us to the playoff by losing to Pitt and getting blown out at scUM. Caps it off with a ridiculous come from ahead collapse against U$C. 2017 he loses to O$U and MSU. Beats scUM, give you that. Throw in beating Washington. 2018, loses to O$U, scUM and MSU. Then loses to UK. 2019, loses to O$U and Minny, two of the best teams on the schedule that year. Gets by scUM barely so give that to you. 2020, I will be generous and just ignore it. Now this year, he beats Wisconsin who was lousy when we played them but will give you that. Then beats Auburn, good win. Okay but then loses to Iowa and Illinois.

Looking back over 5 and a half years not a sterling record in clutch, big games. You can't just add up all the wins against the MAC and average to below average B10 teams and say we have a a solid coach. Well I guess you can and you feel good about being 9-3, 8-4 with a guarantee of losing to O$U every year and a couple other lousy losses. Maybe the occasional 10-2 that squeezes us into a NY 6 bowl that doesn't matter and keeps us happy as he collects $7 mil?
You might want to go back and look at his record year by year and then rewrite your post. You’re judging a coach on being 8-4 every year. 7-6 in the two sanction years was freaking miraculous….then
11-3
11-2
9-4
11-2
4-5
Please tell me where are the 8-4 seasons you speak of?

Appears that the most common number of wins is 11 post sanctions.

Oh my goodness? Are you serious? How about Indians last year? Maryland? Iowa last two years? Michigan State a number of years? Kentucky? Temple? That is just off the top of my head.

You dismiss certain candidates because of what inside knowledge? There are a number of them (and others) that could do the trick and give us a punching chance to improve. Very few would tolerate getting pushed around by Conference weaklings…
You mean 12th ranked Indiana last year who beat Michigan, MSU and Wisconsin? And Iowa is a good football team every year….they’re never a bad loss. Michigan State is also a good program. Kentucky had a really good team that year (as they do this year). You’re reaching big time.

Gee maybe there is something to this extra Covid year

Now Illinois’ roster boasts the most super-seniors among every power-five team in the nation (22) and five more than any other Big Ten school, among them is starting quarterback Brandon Peters, four starting offensive linemen, four starting defensive linemen, All-Big Ten linebacker Jake Hansen starting defensive back Tony Adams and kicker James McCourt and punter Blake Hayes. To achieve that retention is rare in general, but to do so with a brand new coaching staff is an even greater achievement. But it doesn’t come as a surprise to those who are around Bielema every day.

That for me, with the amount of money he is being paid, would be unacceptable.
I can live with the 1 or 2 losses per season but we need to be in the B1G championship hunt every year with at least winning one every 3 years or so.
So if they lower his pay, you’d be okay with it?

I'm not sure what else PSU could give Franklin - he has assistants he wants, a top ten salary, and consistent top 15 recruiting classes (including a top five class a few years ago). I also do not know that you can definitely say what the ceiling is for any potential coach at Penn State, especially when assistants like Day, Riley, and Smart inherit or are hired for 'blue blood' programs and make them 'better' (the opposite can happen too - see USC, but they had sanctions not long after Kiffin was hired they struggled to recover from).

Additionally, I do not believe Barbour would be allowed to hire Franklin's replacement on her own. As with CFJ and OB, there would likely be a 'team' of PSU administrators, donors, 'friends' (and a hiring firm) to get a list of candidates together. Still, I'd take your bet.
We’ll see how good Riley is next year.

If he is making 3 million would you be ok with it?
I would be okay with that, but I would have negotiated his $6,000,000/year guaranteed salary very differently.

Illinois would have been one of Franklin's self-designated six(6) "Foundational Games" for which he and staff would have been expected to win and thus would have been paid $2,700,000 (average of $450,000/game win or lose---guaranteed).

Using James' self-acknowledged preference for big impact plays against him, I (as the Pant Suit Princess Athletic Director) would have him designate six (6) games (at mutual agreement) broken down by the following incentivizing compensation payouts. This is how real executives and their staffs (their contracts would be similar) are paid to deliver performance.

The per game payouts for making the CFB playoffs and winning it all would be accordingly much, much larger because, statistically speaking, they don't happen very often unless you're Alabama

2021 Example
Impact Games (2)
: If won, these payout at $600,000 per game (Auburn?, Indiana?). If lost, $0.

Big Impact Games (2): If won, these payout at $850,000 per game (@Iowa?, @Wisconsin?).If lost, $0.

Huge Impact Games (2): If won, these payout at $1,200,000 per game. (@OSU? Michigan?). If lost, $0.

Pant Suit Sandy (not to be confused with Leisure Suit Larry), wouldn't be interested in hearing any intra- or end of season whining about a QB getting dinged up. Roster management (including recruiting -- development - injuries) are all part of being an effective CEO and are thusly incorporated into the above arrangement.

As with any organization the Compensation Committee would meet at the end of the year to discuss and modify the above based on any unusual or extenuating circumstances (COVID, Corrupt Officiating in any of the Impact Games).

In summary, Franklin's agent bent Pant Suit Sandy over the negotiating table... Lance Liepold, a much better coach, would have taken the above deal in a heartbeat vs what Kansas offered.

For entertainment purposes, feel free to hypothetically impose the above compensation agreement for the 2022 Schedule.

9/3 at Purdue
9/10 vs OHIO
9/17 at Auburn
9/24 vs CENTRAL MICHIGAN
10/1 vs OHIO STATE
10/8 at Michigan
10/15 vs ILLINOIS
10/29 vs MICHIGAN STATE
10/5 at Indiana
10/12 vs MARYLAND
10/19 vs MINNESOTA

And the same posters would be bashing the next guy after his first loss and calling for his head after his first 7-5 season. After all, it should be easy for a coach to be 11-1 or 12-0 every season, we’re Penn State that’s what we were every year when Joe was the coach.

The ever popular Matt Campbell has lost to Iowa 6 years in a row. He's lost to northern iowa, lost to Louisiana (not LSU) by 17 points while ranked, he beat Drake by 3 once while ranked,

The same crop of malcontents appear after every loss and proclaim the sky is falling. Long game lol...these armchairs fire and rehire coaches after every play if you read a game thread
So U$C is not going to hire him after we lose 3 of our last 5? That's the only point yet stating that makes us some kind of delirious flying off the handle trigger happy fans? Are you offended they may go cold on him? Does that bother you that James may not be that highly coveted? Are you and James pals? Are you his agent? Are you mad that people are criticizing him after a horrible loss? How dare we do such a nasty thing!! What are your goals for the program?

sorry to disagree, season ticket holder here since 1977, have only missed 2 home games since 1999 and the only other home game shit show i ever saw like this was our '04 6-4 loss to Iowa. i think franklin spent the last two weeks looking at houses on zillow rather than game film

So whats your plan big guy? lay it out for me. Are you firing Franklin tonight? tomorrow after Sat? before the early signing day? and now who's on your list? what coaches do you have on speed dial. I need your plan since you have it all figured out. C'mon we are all waiting. I have no humble pie to eat because I am not making knee jerk reactions like a 2 year old. Oh get a grip with the two year old nonsense. A little touchy because Franklin’s ceiling is being called out? Get him off you pedestal and evaluate his results. They are lacking.

Here is how it works and how it works for hiring high priced talent. You work up a list that meets the needs. In this case, a coach that can make much better in game decisions and instill a sense of toughness, urgency, and fortitude/desire to compete.

Then you have conversations behind the scenes to drill down on your top candidates. Finally, you find out what it will take to make this happen with your #1. And you have a back-up target should you not reach agreement wit your top target.

There are a number of potential candidates who fit that bill.

Is that a guarantee of success? No. But it sure beats reliving debacles like Saturday without any accountability.

I'm still totally befuddled about how neither backup QB is ready. JF cant really expect that Clifford was going to make it through the season without injury, regardless of how tough he is. He is undeserving of the salary given that we're no closer to the playoff than we were 5 years ago. This nonsense of continuing to bump salaries to hold onto coaches is not paying off. Its time to make a stand and I saw enough on Saturday to cement that.

It seems he's a good person, a great recruiter, but a terrible gameday coach. You need to be excellent at both of the latter to be a great coach, but the first one is merely a plus.

If everyone is being completely honest PSU is trending down right now. Some people don’t want to count last year, but the record shows PSU at 4-5. They could conceivably lose the rest of the games this year with how inept the offense is when you factor in Clifford’s injury. Next year could be even worse with who this team is losing. You think the OL is bad this year? It will be worse next year. Franklin is the head coach and he makes a lot of money (it’s fair to bring this up) and with that comes all of the heat from the fan base. Losing to Iowa on the road with Clifford’s injury is understandable, but losing to a 2-5 Illinois team that was struggling mightily is inexcusable.

No one even knows if USC was interested in him before now. It’s all conjecture by some sports reporters who need to fill air time and/or internet space.

You have seen lists on this site. Pick one of your choosing and that’s your starting point.

Working the plan will require some due diligence. It’s not rocket science, but it does require due diligence.

After 8 Years and having the program going backwards and having actual possibility of going off the cliff this year points towards abandoning of the status quo. Works that way in all walks of life. 7mm per year jobs are not a social entitlement program…results should be required. Competent leadership would insist upon it.

You have to go all the way back to week one of this season to find a game Franklin won against an opponent that was favored...

A lot to unpack here. First you're arguing his wins against average teams don't count, but he's mediocre? Sounds like he's doing great if as a mediocre coach he's beating average teams (average is better than mediocre). Second, have you looked at the records of most coaches people here are clamoring for? Their wins are generally against average to below average teams.

Since Chryst seems to get brought up quite a bit in a positive light, and he's never beaten Franklin lets see what his "real" record is.

He's won 60 games at Wisconsin. Breaking down those 60:

11 against ranked opponents (at kickoff)
0 (4 losses) against Ohio State
31 against unranked (average to bad) big ten teams
15 wins against non-p5
3 wins against unranked p5 outside the big 10

So 82% of his wins are bullshit.

Apparently Clawson is a stud so lets look under that hood too.

47 wins 31 losses at Wake:

4 against ranked opponents (Highest being 19th)
43 against unranked opponents
23 against unranked p5
20 against non-p5
Never Beaten Clemson

In his case you just can't add up 91% of his wins.

1-3 against the big ten (losses to unranked wisconsin, indiana and msu)
0-12 against the top 15

And Ruhle at Baylor.
19 wins:

0 wins against ranked teams
5 against non-p5
0-11 vs top 25 teams
Never Beat OU and none of his wins can be counted.

(Only two wins vs top 25 teams while at Temple)
We are discussing Franklin and his record still stands as average at best with a piss poor record in clutch, big games. I don't care about other coaches. My point is valid. The retort is not, well I can name other coaches who have struggled. Who cares! He recruits well but can't deliver the goods with the Xs and Os. Other coaches can get more out of his talent. You love the guy so keep living in your nothing is wrong world. Feel sorry for you.

Over time CJF teams have shown trends. Almost always a loss after the first loss. Questionable interior line development. Bad losses or near losses to allegedly inferior teams. Mind numbingly frustrating in game decisions or lack of adjustments. Out- toughed by Big 10 teams and schedule.

Fantasy world? Expecting a coach to win every game, recruit top three classes every year, never blow a fourth quarter lead, and get into the CFP every year….. at Penn State? Yeah, I live in a fantasy world.

I've said multiple times on here the Illinois game was unacceptable and he should be embarrassed by it and his record coming off of byes and losses.

I also live in the ****ing real world. If you think his record is average at best you don't understand what average means (it's a pretty simple word) and guys like Ruhle and Clawson have records so far below average they can't even see it. He's got the 25th highest winning percentage amongst active D1 coaches including his time at Vanderbilt of all places and the first couple of years here with the sanctions.

130 D1 schools. Better career winning percentage than 80% of active coaches. Feel free to argue we "deserve" better but its disingenuous to say his record is "average". The fact that you don't understand a simple word renders your argument invalid and I feel sorry for you.
