Back in my teens, I watched WWF (now WWE). In my twenties, I turned to WCW and really enjoyed the NWO invasion. I really lost touch once WWE bought WCW as the stories turned saccharine and they failed to use any of the main event talent they acquired. Now, the new AEW is airing on TNT as a much needed alternative.
They’ve brought in some of the old WWE talent (Jim Ross announcing, Cody Rhodes and Chris Jericho wrestling) as well as a lot of young independent wrestlers that have gained a lot of hype through YouTube channels and other wrestling organizations. Even though this is their first nationally televised show, they had a few PPVs over the summer.
Cody Rhodes is the CEO, and in his entrance promo, it had him jogging in a Penn State football sweatshirt. He wrestled a kid I had never heard of in the first match to set up a title match against Jericho in an upcoming PPV, and you could tell it was their first time working together. There was some high flying moves and they may take some risks that the WWE won’t.
Will it be able to survive against the WWE juggernaut? Hopefully so.
