OT - PSU Football

Another good anecdote I heard was about Kaden Saunder “grew up in Columbus and there’s a reason they never took a sniff at him”
Not saying this about Saunders but recruiting in general, there DOES exist a an element of taking people away from areas where a traditional local power didn’t recruit them (or didn’t very hard).

Now in Saunders case, just because Ohio State recruits 3 5 stars a year at his position, might give a little more leeway. He could both be a Big Ten caliber WR and yet never be seen as a starter at OSU, sure. But in general, that can be a red flag and a noticeable one. To the point where I know that coaches will reach out to the local school that isn’t pushing to investigate.

yea, but I don't see separation... so coaching could be a part of better route running or scheme. On one of the last plays where he rolled left, it looked like Warren was the intended receiver and only receiver... I would think a play in that situation called for some options. I see that a lot... but then again don't have other insight...
I think there are 2 issues:

There isn’t very good coaching or recruiting at the WR position.

Bad Drew is real bad.

I say this because I do think he missed a few guys last night. Not all WRs, but one at least I can think of off top of my head. And there are others running open at times.

But you can’t be as inaccurate as he was last night. Just can’t. Not going to beat anyone good with it.

Our receivers caught zero balls for zero yards. That's not on the coaches
Sure it IS! Those coaches brought them onto the team, coached em’, and offered somewhat glowing prognostications about them improving. Fleming was a Five Star recruit for the Bucknuts. “PennState had nine 4-star wide receivers from its last three high school recruiting classes (2022-2024)” per an AI search. Recruiting is a shaky science, but, no one could claim that our coaches have recruited or developed wide receivers effectively. Zero is the operative word here.

Yeah it’s on the staff as much as anyone. QB too.

I've been wondering for a few years if the WRs can't get open, if they are tipping the route, or are the routes so set in stone that the DBs know the route at snap. I think there are WAY too many times the DB is inside the route, which means they know which way the cut is going. They are almost always inside our short slants. How often did we hit a short slants this season?

Roster wise and not knowing what the portal will bring how is this team set up for this year.

Singleton no longer in the directory? Maybe an error or he's taking some time off?

With Allen and Singleton returning, I propose a revolutionary offense that wins next year’s title: Nine linemen, those on each end a step back (simulating TE’s). Allen and Singleton line up 3-4 yards behind each guard. NO quarterback.
The entire offense is direct snaps to either RB (perhaps with a TE in motion to block) and the other RB also blocking. With their skill, I’m convinced that 3 straight absolutely known running plays will garner an average 3.5 yards per carry and a first down at least every 3 plays.
This time munching offense inchworms down the field, keeping the most explosive offenses (see OSU) on the bench. We win every game, including playoffs. Franklin is vindicated and the offense is banned after one glorious season.
You’re welcome.

@Mods

Audrey may also have written a football article or two (😉), but she wrote the best PSU wrestling coverage out there too, So I’m gonna say you moved this to a less relevant thread than the one I chose.

I’m sure the mods will disagree with me posting it here, but the best p4p beat writer in the sport has involuntarily hit the portal. Sure hope she hits a good new home….

Being the best Penn State football beat writer is not a hard bar to clear. Most of them essentially hate Penn State.

But, yeah, Audrey was ok
Again, I was talking about her wrestling writing. She had tremendous pieces on Carter, Cael’s recruiting, etc in recent years.

The mods moved this to a football thread for some reason.

This is the distinct impression I've been left with over the years. Which makes me wonder if the only reason she has written favorable articles regarding wrestling is because Cael has a we don't need you attitude towards "journalists".

David Jones was the only one that would challenge Franklin on decisions.
He retired last year. Franklin doesn't like being asked questions that he should explain what his thoughts were. Such as the Ohio State play calling on goal line.

He doesn't like questions that lead to illogical answers, and since many of his answers are illogical....

I'll never forget 4th and 6 Inside Zone run, and believe me, I've tried.

If PSU football doesn’t need a full time writer, what college athletic program does? Good bet The Athletic is having financial problems.

Given that The Athletic is a wing of the NY Times, I guarantee they're having financial problems. The NY Times' circulation (and financial viability) has been dropping like a rock for years and years - the fact that nobody reads the NY Tines has zilch to do with the popularity of PSU Football or PSU Athletics in general.

The Athletic was purchased by the NY Times in January 2022 for 550 million.
My guess is, when it was purchased they were looking to expand web subscription by offering a bundle. I did take advantage of an initial bundle offer but they wanted a pretty good penny once the promo was done.
I get the Athletic for PSU football since Penn Live put up paywall and SF Giants baseball. SF Chronicle is now all pay.
