OT: I’m gonna lose 25 pounds by June.

I went on a diet back in May and so far have lost 41 lbs. I walked two miles a day with a back-pack full of weights. I started with 15 lbs in it and each time I lost a pound I would add a pound to the packback. Instead of hopping on the riding mower, I'd push mow about half of my lawn. I cut back to two meals a day and was doing very well until the Holidays hit....lol. I'm back on the wagon now. I went from 241 to 200 when I boarded the plane to head out west. I would give myself a "cheat day" once a week and it seemed to work out well. My motivation was joining my son on an elk hunt this past fall. Best of luck to all of you.

How do you do the weights in the backpack?

I weighed in yesterday at 154. When I worked I was 205. Most of the difference was cutting down on lunches (big restaurant meals with fries), and giving up sugars. I buy only no sugar products now and snack on fresh fruit, a few pretzels or whole almonds, baked apple or no sugar added cookies. I have a banana smoothie with milk, small 60 calorie cut peaches or pears, and half a banana daily for the potassium and it’s a good mid morning boost. Lunch is usually a turkey or leftover meat or chicken sandwich and I just drink water. Dinner is a protein, starch, and veg. Tonight is salmon with Greek pasta salad and zucchini. I have an occasional drink but it’s just one perhaps a few times per week. I probably eat too many carbs with pasta and bread being a weakness. When weather permits I walk or so 15 minutes of pt to stay limber but it’s not cardio. Good luck

Meaning, do you have standard (York barbell?) weights or what?

I use the cheap dumb-bells you find a walmart. Also, canned goods works well too but my wife was getting kind of pissed because all of her beans seemed to be missing.

Im trying something similar as well to lose weight. I made salmon, light risotto, and glazed carrots last night. I put a brown sugar and Jim Beam Peach glaze on the salmon. Its fantastic and satisfied my sweet tooth also, along with the carrots. Peach or apricot preserves work as well if you don't want to add the Beam.

I do a salad or heat up some leftovers for lunch. I cut out white bread. And honestly I haven't missed it.

Snacks are fruits and vegetables instead of chips and cookies.

When I was a kid, I didn't have weights with which to work out. But I had a wrestling coach that had us doing a bunch of exercises with sandbags during wrestling season. So when I was at home, I'd fill my bookbag full of books. I'd do pushups, shoulder press, squats, pullups, etc. wearing or holding a bookbag with probably 50 or more lbs in it. Body weight and weighted body weight exercises are really a great measure. Yes there are 300 lb guys in the gym that bench 405 lbs. But if you are doing that at 200 lbs that is a lot more impressive. This is why I do the weighted pullups. I like to measure relative to what you weigh.

Great job. Cool that you add whatever weight you lost. So when you take off the weighted backpack you see how much extra weight you were caring before. That’s a great motivator to keep it off!

One of the things I did this fall for my baseball team what's make a series of body weight workouts for them since I knew many couldn't get into a gym and didn't have a weight set. I had a pickup day where they could come and get resistance bands from the school and show them how to make their own wrist curl bar and told them to keep their milk jugs so they could put sand in them in those kind of things. Carrying five gallon buckets full of dirt or sand as part of a farmers carry is a really good exercise. had a bunch of parents thank me for the amount of money that they've saved by not having to try and find workout equipment.

Consistency beats top notch equipment. People can buy equipment, you can't buy effort.

One thing that motivates me is having seen guys 15 to 25 years my senior in the gym faithfully. That's what I want to be. Yes, there are young kids that come in without an ounce of fat on them and I remember those days of eating absolutely anything that I wanted in as much quantity as I wanted without any care. But if they don't maintain consistency, those seniors will be easily outdoing them by the time they are into their 30s. I've seen some pretty fit 60 to 70 year olds and they all show up pretty much everyday consistently to work.

Update
Just walked 18 holes.

Man I’m beat.

Started at 265 Jan 1 now I’m 249.

16 down, 49 to go.

Using lose it app. Staying at 1700 net calories a day or less. Depends on how I feel.

I know walking a golf course can use lots of energy. A lot depends on the topography of the course and the distance. I know ... I'm in my 70s and still walk when I play golf if I can.

I used to live on the neuse when I lived in Clayton nc. That course made the elks seem flat.
Now I Belong to the surf in north Myrtle and it is pretty flat but those beach winds can Be tough this time of year.

You won't. I usually play faster than guys who ride carts. My average time for 18 holes on a 6500 yard course is 3.5 hours, providing I don't get held up by a group in front of me riding carts.
Dont play much but when I worked at a golf course in summers during college it was normally cars slowing down the walkers

Hey Irish - Curious, have you ever played ND’s Warren Golf Course? I’m not a big ND fan but it is one of my favorite courses in the country.

Yes. Played it back when it was sort of new, with a nun, yes a NUN. Both of us played from the white tees and she beat me to a pulp. After our round we had a beer together in the club house and I asked her if she played often ... answer : yes, weekly with women's BB coach McGraw.

Why did I get paired up with a nun? Because she was the dorm rector of my daughter's dorm, and at that time getting on the Warren course was kind of difficult. When I found out she played golf, I asked her if she could arrange tee times for us and she did.

Did you get through the whole round without cursing any shots?

So you asked a NUN if you could play around with her.....wait, it was play a round with her. Nevermind!

Just my $.02. A fun course that’s matured very nicely in it’s 20+ years.

On "big" change that I've noticed over the years is the flagsticks. At first they were little things only about chest high. Now they seem to be like those on any other course. (guess they've grown up like the course)

This is a Crenshaw/Coore design, the first of their courses I have played. Since then I've played a number of their other designs or renovations. I've found them all be be enjoyable courses, even their short course at Bandon Dunes.
