I found a great photo from this game and thought I would share. This game took place in October, and it appears to be a sold out Yankee Stadium, which really impresses me. The game finished a tie and PSU went on to be ranked #16.

The description is "In the greatest football classic New Yorkers will ever have the privelege of witnessing, the great team of West Virginia 'mountaneers' played the equally strong eleven of Penn. State to a 13-13 yie in the Yankee Stadium. Photo shows Ekberg, Penn. State fullback, getting away for a gain inthe third quarter. "

If you can find pictures of baseball in yay era you'll probably find similar attendance. Games couldn't be seen on TV or heard on radio. They relied on newspapers for the game summaries. Also note the formal attire men and women wore to games.

The fact that we tied with WV shows how old the picture is.:)

We had the best pair of guards in the country that year (Mike Michalske & Joe Bedenk) and the 3rd best in school history (IMHO) behind Munchak/Farrell & Hartings/Rivera...

Okay, let's see if anyone can come up with the answer to this question (without cheating). Yankee Stadium opened in April of that year. The Yankees won the pennant and played the Giants in the World Series. The Giants won the first game on an inside-the-park home run in the top of the ninth. A famous person hit that home run. Who?

This was the 2nd football game to be played at Bomber Park. The previous week Pitt played Syracuse to a 3-3 tie. In the PSU-WVU game, PSU scored first, a touchdown. Therefore, PSU scored the first touchdown in this soon-to-be historic venue.

Ekberg is a West Virginia player. Do you have the print or was this a digital file? And, do you know its origins?

It is a digital photo that was on Getty. It would make a fantastic print as it is pretty hi-res. I have no idea why it was originally taken but I assume it was for an NYC newspaper

Wow, a 3-3 tie followed up by a 13-13 tie....the good ole days of football, but I bet they had a fullback.

I believe in 1923 Penn State also played at USC ..lost by a couple of points. I don't know if the game was held at the Rose Bowl (if the stadium was even built or called the RB) at that time in history....too lazy to Google.
Here ya go, step

The 1923 Rose Bowl, played on January 1, 1923, was an American Football bowl game. It was the 9th Rose Bowl Game. The USC Trojans defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions 14-3.[1]Leo Calland, a USC guard, was named the Rose Bowl Player of the Game when the award was created in 1953 and selections were made retroactively.[2] It was the first bowl game appearance for both the University of Southern California and Pennsylvania State University football teams. It was also the first Tournament of Roses football game held in the newly constructed Rose Bowl Stadium, although games had been played in it prior to this game.
