Penn State Wrestling's Rise To Prominence Under Cael Sanderson

Probably. In Flo’s defense (I am no fan but do appreciate any free or reliable wrestling coverage) Cael and team weren’t going to talk to them.

I was at the last practice before nationals back in late 10’s, and Cael wrapped it with:

“Up until semi-finals you have no media obligations. Talk to ESPN if you want. Don’t talk to Flo. If you make semis or finals you might get pulled to talk to ESPN. Don’t talk to Flo.”

I watched a few minutes of the Flo series and plan to watch the rest.

I am probably out of the loop here, but what are Cael's issues with Flo?

There was this one year that Cael was completely lost and needed a plan. Cael asked a guy from Flo for onevand he refused to give Caek one. Unfortunate situation if you ask me…
Yeah it is unfortunate. Pyles still suffers from PTSD and must wear depends for his body reactions to the words "Cael", "plan" or "Penn State".

He did allow his son to blurt out that he wished Penn State would get nailed for steroids on 1 FRL - with only a mild protest at the time.

So there’s that

For real? I missed that. If you were to take a guess, where do you think his son got the idea that PSU had a steroid issue to even say that?
It was likely in the last 2-3 months. You could probably sift through the archive show notes and see when he was on. He hasn’t been on since and it was the first time in years so it’s not like there are several shows to re-listen to. I mean, he’s just a kid, but that didn’t sit right.

Yeah… I don’t blame him at all.

I seem to recall his son coming on to do Iowa preseason picks back before the season began (maybe Oct/Nov). I don’t recall a discussion about steroids and PSU but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

Edit: his son was on on November 2, 2022 starting around 54:50

1:12:05 is the steroids comment.

IMO Cael's beef with Flo started when they pulled NLWC Tax Forms in 2017 and you clearly could tell they were trying to imply cheating because we had an absurd amount of money.

99% of people in wrestling don't understand what an endowment is. They just see 5M (and it's probably north of 10M now) and assume that's what PSU pays out every year to our wrestlers. No, that's not how it works. Yes - we had a large donation that year, it was meant to be an investment endowment that grows every year and pays a good bit of passive income (dividends/interest) that allows us to partially pay our wrestlers a good bit in addition to donations. Also, with wise investments, the endowment will significantly grow over time.

Through that, you have people literally believing that we use that money to pay our wrestlers under the table to bypass the 9.9 scholarships. No - we have lost recruits regularly because we consider how to divvy up scholarships and who is feasibly willing to come for a little less money (or maybe a lot less) than a full ride they'd be offered at most other programs. There's a reason Kasak committed to PSU instead of Shapiro. I'll leave it at that. Rob Koll even openly said "Cael is good at convincing kids to take less for the chance to wrestle for him"

Of course the average fan doesn't get that. Hell, Mason Beckman (a Rudis employee) literally put it on the record he thinks we have 19.9 scholarships.

I honestly think Beckmans girlfriend left him for a PSU wrestler or something.

Missed that. How old is son? At a certain age he is simply restating what his daddy has babbled. Old enough to articulate his own thoughts then he is an idiot. Anybody who has ever been in a gym where roid use is readily apparent would have a tough time concluding the PSU kids are doing many roids.

I'm still curious as how a college student can afford to buy a house as a college student. Pre NIL.. and a wrestler.

Didn't Matt Brown do this, and rented the extra rooms to teammates?

I might read that as a contractual agreement / obligation with ESPN. ESPN paid for the rights to televise the tournament and the contract might have included any and all interviews at the tournament.
