U23 World Championships - Oct 21-27, 2024

Bouzakis is out. Kid who beat him got teched in the quarters
at 61 Magomedov is definitely the favorite as returning champ, his finals match should be real good though. Abdullayev is the kid who was beating Lilledahl at U20 worlds 9-5 with 20 seconds left last year before LL came back with the fall with 8 seconds left to seal it

The first takedown that MM gave up in his first match was insane. That guy made what Levi does being stretched out from a sprawl look elementary.

The Orozobek vs Gadzhiev match was wild. Just insane high level of handfight, nobody touching each others legs in the entire match. The 74kg final should be really interesting with the handfight.

Sure he can be more defensive but who the hell wants that? I love his style and hope he don’t change a thing.

I’d rather see a guy lose and entertain every match than win a 3-2 snooze fest
It's not an either/or question. He lost the same way to Carr and almost lost to Hamiti, two excellent counter guys. Go Go Go is not always a wise strategy, and can be successfully defended. I love MM but there is always going to be one of those guys where his style doesn't work well against. That's when he needs to be satisfied with winning 5-0. Like Levi and Carter. So 95% of the time you'll see the MM you love, but 5% of the time he may need to dial back a little.

Orozobek's semi was the same thing. He does not let people even close to his legs, Takahashi lives on peoples legs so that will be a very interesting matchup to watch for sure. Some great Repechage matches tomorrow, MM vs Reza winner gets Asluev and Gadzhiev vs Khaniev

This was my main takeaway, The first three takedowns for Taki were directly off a whistle restart where he got right in on MM's legs. That was the same way Carr got his first takedown against MM to start the NCAA Finals match. He is way too open off of whistle restarts and since he is so used to guys running away from him when someone actually handfights and takes a shot off the whistle they get in really deep
Yes, and the whole idea that he must sacrifice scoring in order to clean up his defense is a classic false choice. He can do both.

For starters, he would've scored against Carr if he hadn't spent 1:45 of the first period on bottom after he walked into a gimme takedown. #analysis

It probably won't hurt him again in college -- who at 157/165 in the next 3 years will take advantage of this? But he has bigger career goals than NCAAs.

Well its freestyle, any good wrestler can have a decent chance of winning against a better wrestler, why do you think guys like JD and others like it. Its a stupid scoring system and the refs absolutely control the match.

Mark Johnson, NCAA runner-up to Iowa's Chris Campbell in 1970s and later Illinois' head coach, would start every match the same exact way. Shake hands, and on the whistle stand there, do a loose little 2 step jig and then he would wrestle. He was wrestling a Russian in international competition and on the whistle the Russian blast doubled Johnson to his back and a fall.

Film study is not new and a slight adjustment is warranted.

Mitch faking & Reza reacting. Reza down on his knees now, slow getting back to center. Mitch back in on shot again, Reza's cooked & gives up another TD, 15-7, 17-sec left. Reza lying on the mat. The ref telling him to get up, but now there's a challenge for something, maybe just a lung challenge. Reza still on the mat catching his breath. Mitch bouncing around in the center of the mat. He's ready to go.

Challenge lost, point Mitch, 16-7. Back to action. Mitch coming forward off the whistle, Reza rested up, but has nothing left & that's how it ends.

Great description of the action! Thank you Slippery, you're The Man!

Mitch dominates but again the points he gives up are off counters.

the time you put in these events to relay the info to this board is underrated. even if it has been said 1,000 times before.
Thanks. Wrestling is the only sport I follow, so I'm usually watching the PSU matches anyway. It's been fun & I'm glad others enjoy it!

This is the first year I've paid much attention to Freestyle though, and I'm surprised by how much I've enjoyed watching it. I like the passivity calls & shot clock. That seems to help keep the action going. The dual 3-min periods is nice change of pace too. I've also become a fan of the Japanese team. I like their approach to & style of wrestling.

This is kind of an odd tournament for me. Mitch, Patrick Kennedy & Nic Bouzakis are the only wrestlers I recognize. I've never heard of the rest of the US team members before.

disgraceful performance by the japanese guy against kennedy. absolute refusal to wrestle in the 2nd period but kennedy took a couple bad shots and gave up some go behinds so the ref never put him on the clock.

PK received two separate points for the Japanese guy fleeing the mat. I understand your point, but it's hard to put a guy on the clock who scored 6 points in the 2nd while getting dinged for fleeing twice. Point scoring, no matter how it happens, goes a long way toward not being put on the clock. Maybe the ref also considered the fleeing points as pseudo stalling/clock points.

There is gaming in every sport and every walk of life. Stay within in the laws or the rules to get an advantage. Wrestling is no exception. My lens sees more athletes gaming the rules in freestyle to get an advantage than folkstyle. I hope the governing bodies continue to work toward elimination of tactics which in a sense degrade the sport and the athlete. It is truly frustrating and way too subjective for my liking.

74kg Bronze Medal Match - Mitchell Mesenbrink VS Magomedrasul Asluev (BRN)

Period 1:
It sounds like Michael Bisping is doing the commentary. Mitch is wearing red & Asluev is in blue. Casey is in Mitch's corner. Here we go! Mitch coming forward, drops in on a low single, Asluev countering & they go out of bounds, step out point Mitch, 1-0, restart. Mitch drops back in on a leg immediately, Asluev countering & it's a stalemate, restart. Circling, Mitch snaps, nothing & again, but nothing. Hand fighting & circling, Mitch in on a low single again, Asluev locked through the crotch, stalemate, restart. Mitch snaps, nothing. Circling, Mitch with another snap, nothing. Asluev looking underhook, nothing. Mitch in on a low shot, nothing, Passivity warning Asluev. Circling & hand fighting, Mitch shoots, nothing, Asluev shoots, nothing. Mitch in on a low single again, working, but Asluev kicks free. Tying up & hand fighting, 30-sec left. Asluev snaps, nothing & that's how the period ends. 1-0 Mitch.

Period 2:
It looks like Joe Russell in Mitch's corner with Casey. Back to action. Mitch shoots, nothing. Tying up, Asluev shoots, nothing & back to circling in the center. Asluev looking underhook, but nothing. Mitch back in on the low single, elevates it, Asluev trying to fight it off, Mitch keeps coming forward & they're head to feet now, stalemate, restart, 2:03 left. Circling, Mitch shoots, nothing. Passivity warning #2 on Asluev & he goes on the clock. Mitch shoots off the whistle, gets the ankle again, but Asluev kicks free. Back to center circling & hand fighting. Shot clock Point Mitch, 2-0, 1:23 left.. Mitch shoots a double & takes Asluev out of bounds for 2, 4-0, restart, 1-min left. Tying up, Mitch back in on the low single, Asluev trying to fight him off. Mitch keeps working & gets the TD, 6-0, restart, 28-sec left. Tying up & circling, a couple snap attempts, Asluev coming forward a little & he drops in on a low single, but time expires & that's how it ends.

Mitchell Mesenbrink DEC Magomedrasul Asluev 6-0

Mitch wins Bronze!

Conditioning being a US weapon leads me to believe cold spray lungers are a ways down the road from being addressed.
