at 61 Magomedov is definitely the favorite as returning champ, his finals match should be real good though. Abdullayev is the kid who was beating Lilledahl at U20 worlds 9-5 with 20 seconds left last year before LL came back with the fall with 8 seconds left to seal itBouzakis is out. Kid who beat him got teched in the quarters
Nick Lee was fairly sloppy and go go go his first few years. He seemed to find a nice balance..You can do both. And he will. Look at JB, DT. Being more disciplined with his head is going to make him jump levels. Think about it like this - he can't get to a guys legs unless his head is lower anyway. So it's the same discipline.
It's not an either/or question. He lost the same way to Carr and almost lost to Hamiti, two excellent counter guys. Go Go Go is not always a wise strategy, and can be successfully defended. I love MM but there is always going to be one of those guys where his style doesn't work well against. That's when he needs to be satisfied with winning 5-0. Like Levi and Carter. So 95% of the time you'll see the MM you love, but 5% of the time he may need to dial back a little.Sure he can be more defensive but who the hell wants that? I love his style and hope he don’t change a thing.
I’d rather see a guy lose and entertain every match than win a 3-2 snooze fest
Yes, and the whole idea that he must sacrifice scoring in order to clean up his defense is a classic false choice. He can do both. This was my main takeaway, The first three takedowns for Taki were directly off a whistle restart where he got right in on MM's legs. That was the same way Carr got his first takedown against MM to start the NCAA Finals match. He is way too open off of whistle restarts and since he is so used to guys running away from him when someone actually handfights and takes a shot off the whistle they get in really deep
Mark Johnson, NCAA runner-up to Iowa's Chris Campbell in 1970s and later Illinois' head coach, would start every match the same exact way. Shake hands, and on the whistle stand there, do a loose little 2 step jig and then he would wrestle. He was wrestling a Russian in international competition and on the whistle the Russian blast doubled Johnson to his back and a fall. This was my main takeaway, The first three takedowns for Taki were directly off a whistle restart where he got right in on MM's legs. No shit. I was waiting for a face mush.
the time you put in these events to relay the info to this board is underrated. even if it has been said 1,000 times before.Mitch will be in the 16th match on Mat B tomorrow, which should be somewhere around 6am Eastern, +/-15 min. He will get the winner of Reza (IRI) vs Fulmer (AUS), which is the second match on Mat B.

Reza with a drag & he comes behind for the TD, 5-4, restart. Tying up, Mitch shoots, Reza backs away & the period ends. 5-4 Reza
Period 2:
Back to action. Tying up. Reza looking underhooks, snaps, but nothing, Mitch in on the legs on the edge & gets a step out, 5-5, restart. Reza looking a little fatigued already. Mitch in on the legs off the whistle, gets a TD & adds a turn. 9-5. Reza hurt now. Injury time. It looks like Reza's right foot or ankle. The magic cold spray is out, so he'll probably be ready to go soon, right after he gets his wind back. Reza has his shoe & sock off now, he's getting the full power of the magic cold spray. Now he's putting everything back on. Lol.
Back to action. Mitch shoots, nothing. Circling, Mitch shoots, Reza counters & gets a TD, 7-9, restart, 2-min left. Reza looking for blood time. Mitch shoots, Reza looking underhook, snaps, but it's a stalemate, restart. Mitch is like a wild man & shoots again & gets another TD, 11-7. He might be a little reckless, but he just doesn't stop coming. Back to center. Mitch coming forward again, reaches, nothing, then h gets deep in on a second shot & picks up another TD, 13-7, restart, 1-min left. Mitch snaps, then tries a drag, nothing. Mitch faking & Reza reacting. Reza down on his knees now, slow getting back to center. Mitch shoots off the whistle again, Reza counters, gets a leg, but is too tired to finish & Mitch gets away easily. Mitch back in on shot again, Reza's cooked & gives up another TD, 15-7, 17-sec left. Reza lying on the mat. The ref telling him to get up, but now there's a challenge for something, maybe just a lung challenge. Reza still on the mat catching his breath. Mitch bouncing around in the center of the mat. He's ready to go.
Challenge lost, point Mitch, 16-7. Back to action. Mitch coming forward off the whistle, Reza rested up, but has nothing left & that's how it ends.
Mitchell Mesenbrink DEC Ali Abbas Rezaeiaghouzgeleh 16-7
Mitch will face Magomedrasul Asluev from Bahrain in the Bronze medal match. The medal round starts at Noon Eastern. Asluev lost to Takahashi 5-1 in the semi-finals.
Thanks. Wrestling is the only sport I follow, so I'm usually watching the PSU matches anyway. It's been fun & I'm glad others enjoy it!the time you put in these events to relay the info to this board is underrated. even if it has been said 1,000 times before.
This!Great description of the action! Thank you Slippery, you're The Man!
Sure he is. Uh-huh.Magomedrasul Asluev from Bahrain
PK received two separate points for the Japanese guy fleeing the mat. I understand your point, but it's hard to put a guy on the clock who scored 6 points in the 2nd while getting dinged for fleeing twice. Point scoring, no matter how it happens, goes a long way toward not being put on the clock. Maybe the ref also considered the fleeing points as pseudo stalling/clock points.disgraceful performance by the japanese guy against kennedy. absolute refusal to wrestle in the 2nd period but kennedy took a couple bad shots and gave up some go behinds so the ref never put him on the clock.

So wait, you don't think wrestlers try to hurt each other? It's a combat sport. This isn't submission grappling weirdo.
Agreed. It's bad for the sport in general in a high level event.yeah, i have no issue with the ref, there was nothing he could have done. i was more commenting on the japanese guy's actions
He stalls as bad as NolfMitch firing shots like he is a bump stock. 100% bonus coming this year.
Conditioning being a US weapon leads me to believe cold spray lungers are a ways down the road from being addressed. There is gaming in every sport and every walk of life. Stay within in the laws or the rules to get an advantage. Wrestling is no exception. My lens sees more athletes gaming the rules in freestyle to get an advantage than folkstyle. I hope the governing bodies continue to work toward elimination of tactics which in a sense degrade the sport and the athlete. It is truly frustrating and way too subjective for my liking.
Definitely a great accomplishment. Takahashi is the real deal. Wish MM had a few matches coming into this tournament. Looked like he needed to knock the rust off early onU23 Bronze is a great accomplishment. I think he wins it next year.
