Post Match Mood Thread

I'm not going to speculate, but we gotta remember, your first (or second) semester as a freshman on campus is a wild ride, all by itself. Kids have a LOT of adjustments to make, and that's well before you start talking about starting for the premiere wrestling team in the country. Patience is always worthwhile, and I'm gonna continue to root for Devin.

I can't say who told me, but I was told this by someone who has a track record as reliable as yours and says he was in the room for the match.

I never doubt your insights to the program, but this time while I hope you are right I believe what I was told.

If that result is accurate, tells me Teasdale is simply too big for 125. Not the end of the world, he was only going to be there for 1 year anyway.

I thought winning by fall in your Rec Hall debut might be pretty rare. Then I looked back through the last few years and found Keener and Cortez both won their debuts by fall, if I'm not mistaken,
So did Nico, also as a true freshman.

While I love DT, I mean... No entertainment for intermission?

After RBY got his pin, I said to my brother "we may see 7 or 8 pins today". The guys really got after it yesterday. That may have been the best performance in many ways that I've seen in an opening match. 9 wins - 7 by fall and 2 by tf. Geez. Talk about a buzzsaw.

I'm long past the panic stage. I was there when I saw the 3-2 Colton Camacho result last year. Teasdale still managed to have some good moments (beating Glory), but I've accepted that there's a decent chance he's a non-factor for PSU wrestling. Teske was a good pickup and now I would love to reel-in Howard.

You hear the way Cael talks about RBY? Yeah, compare that to when he was asked similar questions about Teasdale a month back.....you would have thought he was talking about junior/senior Gulibon.

Too early for much speculation about Teasdale but I really don't like the sound of him not being in the stands with the team. It could be something innocent like sickness. Let's see if that repeats before we sense any smoke here.

I never thought he was going to go this year anyway.

Hopefully we'll see him in some open tourneys soon displaying some college level development. We'll see if he makes a serious run at 125 this year.

If Howard signs in the next few weeks I think the speculation will jump back to full swing.

Agree. Anything we get from him is a bonus in my book, we've got enough recruits coming in each year. Not as focused on Howard as many are, to me he's not like a Brooks, more like a Starocci. We're going to get some of those guys every year, some will pan out, others may not. If we don't get Howard, we'll get someone else of similar ilk sooner or later no matter what the FLO rankings say. Don't get me wrong, I like Howard and, yeah, he could end up being real good, but I could say that about a lot of guys. Well maybe not a lot, but you get my drift.

The way we are recruiting we can absorb a hit here and there, which is absolutely going to happen. We brought in a bunch of lightweights this year, good chance at least 1 goes bust. Next year we will bring in a bunch of uppermids to uppers and good chance at least 1 goes bust. But we are bringing in excess and that's the key. The only team I see doing similar things right now is tOSU and they are going to be an issue over the next few years. Iowa is recruiting better, as well, but they are still thinner and they can't afford much in the way of busts - which is playing with fire. They might be able to contend for a year here or there if everything breaks right, but tOSU is recruiting to be a long term PITA. Fortunately, I think we are still ahead at this point looking down the road.

For sure. There’s no lightweight Aaron Brooks available. Hawkeye fans seem fanatical about Howard, but I’m not there with him at this point.

Edit: Figueroa might be that kind of recruit.

Hawkeye fans are also fanatical about Austin DeSanto, Patricio Lugo, Max Murin, Nelson Brands, Patrick Kennedy, Abe Assad, Jacob Warner, Tony Cassioppi. They're all going to win national titles while at Iowa. Hopefully, for their sanity, they'll get two from the above list. Honestly, I'd put the over/under at 1.5.

Honestly, except for Iowa starting from a much higher floor, Iowa fans and Rutgers fans (other than the few reasonable ones) are a lot alike. They both wildly overestimate the ability of wrestlers just because they wear the "right" singlet. If Penn State were the same way, they would be guaranteeing 4 NC's from RBY after yesterday's match.

Sending out positive vibes for Gavin and wishing him well.

Mrs JA and I have a son who is adjusting to life this year as a college freshman. So perhaps I have some emphaty to adjustments college kids go thru....let alone one's with the pressure and spotlight that Gavin has.

I'm looking forward to watching him wrestle...[/QUOTE]

Thanks for "humanizing" the young man, ja. No two situations the same for those arriving at totally new and different surroundings. Some adjust quickly, others don't.

And best wishes for your son. May the college experience, every aspect, be a good one.

Agree 100%. Reread my above post, don't mean it to be a dig on Gavin. Just a general outlook of 18-20 year old kids, no matter how good of wrestlers they are. Some of them are going to have trouble adjusting to the next level in one or many ways. No idea if this is the case with Gavin, and sure hope for the best and wish him well. But I can guarantee it will be the case with more than 1 of our recruits over the coming years. Just a statistical thing. One thing that we have going in our favor here, is that either through identification or something going on in the program, Cael and Co. have shown a lower "bust" rate at all levels of incoming talent over his tenure despite some opposing fanbases and select fans vehement denials of this.

I'll go with Youngguns on this one. I have no doubt you were told something, but I don't know anyone closer to Gavin than Youngguns

On a side note..I've watched Teasdale a ton over the years and have watched Schnupp for past year. I would be absolutely shocked if Schnupp was within 10 points of Gavin.

I'd give 'em 2.5...which is of course still consistent with your basic point.

That should tell you something.
Yes, that his BWI chauffer dropped the ball.

Or he was in the locker room squeezing out a Downey when the one poster looked.

Or any number of reasons that could range from benign to personal and confidential.

I'd prefer to get some verification before getting lathered up about this.

I thought higher because I really like Cassioppi, but Gable is rs'ing, plus some of the other talent coming in, lowers his factor significantly. Normally, I would say odds are pretty good for a guy like that to win at least 1, but that's a real roll of the dice. Still could happen though. Warner, maybe also. Lots of tough sledding for the other guys, but one could surprise.

Maybe Teasdale & Morgan McIntosh were both home sick & decided to go on a road trip together this weekend ?

My only beef with the match yesterday is that it took me longer to get there than to watch them demo Kent.

Always really enjoy your posts Dice, and was definitely not saying you or anyone was taking a shot at Gavin. I apologize if my post implied otherwise.

As I was reading through this thread it just occurred to me that my son and Gavin were the same age, so I have some extra incentive to really pull for him.

No worries. When I wrote "reread" I was referring to myself, not you. I could have worded the first post better.

How does one get lathered up lol.

I remember when Cenzo was a redshirt and missed weight a couple of different times and several posters speculated that he was struggling with the adjustment to college and lacked discipline. He has turned out ok for the most part. I wouldn't give up on a talent like Gavin no matter what early struggles he may encounter. I have heard from a source very close to Brody that he is working his butt off and getting better by the day.

First, this is again, attempting not to start anything about Gavin. No idea if he in fact is struggling, nor if he is having any adjustment issues.

Just addressing Cenzo. In my experience, Cenzo is pretty unique. Wouldn't expect what works for Cenzo to work for everyone. Actually, to me, that's what's so great about him!

Well said. That's the thing, isn't it? Every situation is different.

I very well could have missed or over looked him. I was near the area where the team walked in and out so I tried keeping a close eye. Wasn't trying to start rumors, just an observation.
