PSU Lineup Look from FloWrestling

A nice and fair write up from Christian. That's how I see things going as well. The biggest question to me is 184. I honestly don't care who wins the spot, but will be interested in the battle for the spot. Probably at the Scuffle.

Actually I am hoping Rasheed wins the spot and here is my reasoning.
A healthy Matt McCutchen is pretty darn good, and if he stayed healthy I figure he could place fairly high at nationals. If Rasheed is beating a healthy McCutchen that should mean at 84 we would be better than fairly high at nationals.

In the battle for #2, does anybody feel it might be MJ over the Hawkeye?
I'd have to see how Micah handles 149, but I agree with you. I think he'll handle it well. Not a slam dunk Sorenson makes it back to finals. Also, Tsirtsis will be a year removed from his tragic season and may return to form. 2-4 at 149 will be competitive next year.

I thought M Jordan looked like a scarecrow last year; I have to think he should naturally be at 149 (or higher).

Oh, I agree completely. He needed to be 149 last year. But length and musculature of opponents changes from weight to weight, and how he reacts to that is what I want to see first. I expect no issues for Micah, but...

I'm really looking forward to seeing Cassar at 197. Flo has some videos of him drilling last summer with Snyder, Valencia, Downey, Courts, Burak, etc. and he looked pretty good. Fit, athletic kid with a nice blast double.

I'd love to see him, or whomever is at 197, learn that bow and arrow series from Morgan (or Zain) that was used to turn many for back points. I think that took him to the next level this past year.

At 184, I think Rasheed with his length is a problem for McCutchen. If he can go up 20lbs and still have that quick, penetrating first step, he will be a handful.

Count me as a minority who believes a healthy Cutch is one tough hombre. I admire Rasheed and his skill set, but I really think Cutch will rise to the challenge. I have been proven wrong before, so the crow though not tasty will at least be familiar. Time will tell.

I don't know if you recall, but at this time last year, Cassar thought he could beat McIntosh for the starting position. If he can wrestle even close to McIntosh's ability, we will be pleased.

Anyone wrestling on our team is one tough hombre. Every one of the guys has my utmost respect. I think Cutch and Rasheed will be a battle royale this fall. I hope Cutch rises to the challenge, and I hope Rasheed returns it in kind. In the end, whomever is our guy will be tested and serve us well.

"Handful for teammate" doesn't score any points at nationals. The starter will be the guy who the coaches think will do best outside the room, against the rest of the field.

Jefe-I agree and understand that premise.

I think Rasheed would score the most points at nationals next year if he is the starter at 184. My position (and I maybe I was not clear enough) is that if Rasheed can go up to 184 with his length and can keep his quickness that he will be a handful for everyone, especially Mouse. I saw that at 165 last year with some pins and bonus point wins (4 MD, 1 TF, 6 pins in 17 wins). I look forward to hearing if he can do that.

How many points did PSU score at nationals last year at 184? This is my bias but I don't see Mouse as a potential nat'l champ or finalist. I feel like with his big move possibilities, Rasheed can upset anyone. Not saying it is likely but I think he has more margin for error than Mouse does. Mouse is very good but more of a grinder. With the bonus point mentality of the team, if it is close, I think Rasheed gets the nod. Just my 2 cents.

Obviously I am assuming he can beat Mouse in the room, excel against opponents in duals and tournaments, keep his weight and fitness in check and stay healthy.

Loved this article.

I focused on two points. First, no expectation for Nolf to move up next year. I think that's what everybody has been saying, but I'd think he may move up the following year, causing a logjam at 65.

Second, no good answer for where Manville fits in. But if he redshirts in 16-17, could he be the guy at 57 if Nolf moves up?

The way I see it, we have 3 awesome wrestlers at 57-65, Manville, Nolf, and Joseph. I'd expect we see Hall at 74, and Bo at 84 in 17-18. I don't think any of Nolf, Joseph or Manville have the length to move beyond 65, so hence the logjam at 57-65.

The best part is the composition of the team. One senior, two juniors (w/ McCutcheon at 184), two freshmen and five sophs. If Rasheed is at 184, one less junior and one more soph. There is some filling in to do at the light end, but no rush except maybe at 141.

There has been some speculation that Manville would gray shirt, then red shirt, then spend one year at 149 replacing Zane in Nolf's and Nickal's senior year. No idea if there is any validity in this.

Regardless of what Cael does, he'll never replace Ruth and Taylor.

I haven't seen anyone confirm Jimmy staying at 141 yet. I still think it might be best with Jimmy at 133 and Jered at 141.

Ask yourself: How do we maximize points, in the combined 133 and 141? I think we have more points in St Louis, with Jimmy at 133 and Jered at 141.

. . . no expectation for Nolf to move up next year. . . .
By trying to stay at the same weight, Nolf would be depriving himself of Retherford's "watermelon plan" that involves becoming insanely strong in the weight room. Is it a big sacrifice to not be able to use the watermelon plan? (I ask because I don't know.)

"Everything will be alright once Taylor and Ruth are gone"

HR, for 4 straight years, until Zain, Jason, and Bo rolled in.

as an aside I turned on the western channel this afternoon and an Audie Murphy movie was on (never did catch the name). One of the villains looked familiar but I couldnt place him; turned out it was the Professor.
An old friend of mine was a classmate of Mary Ann's, but I never got to meet her.

She was Miss Nevada in the Miss America Pageant in 1959.

Oh yeah!

You don't hear the "Cael can only win with a double class" canard any more either.
There is a ton of "I am just a really big stupid head" garbage not coming from the clown section anymore.

While the Cael can't win without a double class crap isn't uttered anymore, Tommy Brands has yet to win a championship without a double class. I wonder why we don't see much on that subject.

I may get yelled at for this, but good lord PSU and Iowa battles in 2017-2020 are going to give me ulcers. The Hawks are going to have their best lineup in a decade or so come 2017 and PSU isn't backing down. Gonna be some wars

Iowa always has a tough as nails team and the dual this coming season will be intense and entertaining, but PSU wins at least 6 of the 10 matches and scores all of the bonus points.
Since Iowa has won 3 national titles in the last decade and in that time has had individual competitors who won multiple championships - I find it nearly impossible to even remotely propose the 2017 Iowa team as one of the best in the past decade let alone the best.

Please list your proposed Iowa lineup for 2017.
