PSU vs Minnesota Dual Thread

Disclaimer: I am the LEAST knowledgeable of all posters on this board.

I had the pleasure of going to the cities for the meet. Observations....
-Suriano is quick as a cat.
-Great effort by George C. All the way to the end.
-JIMMY... fought all the way and waited for opportunities. Loved to see him get the win.
-Zain is Zain
-Nolf put a "physical beating" on his opponent.
-Joseph... very patient and tactical
-Geno... like Joseph.. very patient.
-Bo
-Matt.... wrestled tough. Pfarr has so much length on Matt and seemed to have an answer for everyone of Matt's moves.
-Nick N. ... nice win against a ranked opponent.

Other observations... "The Pavilion" is a fun place to watch a meet... up close and personal. The Gophers fan were nice to this PSU fan. About 20 PSU fans in attendance. Neatest moment... met the "trainer" from PSU's 1962 wrestling team (he lettered as a trainer that year). He now lives in Ohio and was at the meet while visiting his daughter who lives in the Cities. Says he doesn't go to PSU home meets because they are always sold out.

Great night and well worth the 2 1/2 drive. NOTE: get there early for parking :(

Great job by Jimmy! What's up with Joseph? Leg wrapped up real good and kinda looked gassed at time

Not the first time this season that Joseph has looked gassed at the end of the 2nd period. Something to monitor going forward, IMO.

I am uncertain of the reason people believe Joesph was gassing. The announcers made mention of it when the Minnesota kid got the takedown and Joesph was stuck underneath with a leg tied up and he was stuck on his belly. On the restart Vincenzo came right out and almost immediately scored a takedown to secure the victory.

Not really sure what people thought they saw. I obviously missed it. Based on how Vincenzo finished he wasn't gassed. The announcers were basing it on his inaction on the bottom which was a direct result of his leg being bent up underneath him.

I thought the kid wrestled a good match.

Cenzo walked to the center of the mat with his hands on his hips.

That's it.

That was the entire basis for those to simpletons to claim he was "gassing", over and over again, that is, just before that blast double that ended the match, by Cenzo, of course. Guess he caught his "second wind",lmao.

Duster was there anything u didn't throw shade at MN for? Seriously it was like u were trying extra hard to prove you are indeed a PSU fan from MN. Just cuz Jammen is a tool doesn't mean u have to play MN like that.

Nice team u guys have. Congrats

Years of pent-up aggression, mixed with hearing the crowd only want stalling for Lizak had my blood running hot. I know that the same thing happens at Rec Hall, but I call it out, then, too. Was there a good-sized crowd last night?

thanks for posting...but about your handle... have had a couple of Labs and now a Boykin Spaniel.....they've done wonderful on grouse and they hunt near me! :)

Listened to Eggum post match - what an assclown making excuses that kids are tired and penn state well rested ......you got your asses kicked period! No need for excuses...you wrestle every day....going to next match after 3 days since last match, even a tourney, is no excuse. Yeah, and I hope your kids do meet PSU guys at Big because I don't think those matches will be "turned around" as you allude, except that maybe McCutcheon finds a way to beat Pfarr. Lizak stalled his ass off against Suriano as well and it wasn't called. Lizak was very happy to get off mat with a "close" loss, instead of getting decked.

That's interesting... no excuse for losing. In the "program" last night I did notice that most Gophers had records similar to: 17-1, 14-9, 12-9, 18-6, 9-9, 16-1, 18-5 as compared to PSU average of 8 to 9 total matches. Sure that the Scuffle is a big difference.

I would imagine Penn State having to travel almost a 1,000 miles to get there would balance things out a bit.

Tell you what, I was disappointed when the Gophers weren't on the schedule last year because I was looking forward to the beat down that was sure to come but the guys probably won by as much tonight as they would of last year. Great effort from the entire team.

He forgot the long bus ride, flu, and average officials.

I Agree. Joseph looked great all the way thru that match. No gassing whatsoever.

Come on Cropduster, we always call them right at Rec Hall.
Im thinking attendance was mediocre at best, you?

Some Gophers wrestled as many matches at the scuffle as some PSU guys had all season. Comparing a plane ride to competing in a two day meat grinder of a tournament? I do think with more recovery the Gophers compete better and put up more of a fight. Not sure that results in any different outcomes, but I do think it results in a better product from the Gophers. Cael has stated this as part of the reason for not competing at the scuffle this season.

Cael did not state that the Scuffle + Minnesota within 4 days was too much.

He stated that the Scuffle, travel to State College, travel to Minneapolis, facing Minny, travel to Lincoln, facing Nebby -- all of that within 1 week was too much.

Ok, I can't help myself but to add a couple of thoughts.
1) Suriano can take down Lizak at will - incredible on his feet! He could of easily yo-yo'd that match into a major if he wanted to, but that said, think it's good he spent some time on the bottom and will likely be better by nationals for it.
2) McCutch was in on a low single multiple times. If he can figure out how to convert those to 2 and avoid 45 second funk contest, he could be beating Pfarr ala McIntosh style.
3) Nevills with an arm bar. End of match almost turned Kreolls...and getting it in the first place is the hard part. Little more work on that to figure out how to roll those big guys over - they rarely roll back.
4) Nolf's headlock - soooo well set up! After all, to hit it on a #9 guy, it's gotta be.
Just some random thoughts...

I'm happy Suriano was under Lizak. A lot of people said he shouldn't go down (and he did choose neutral) -- but the dual isn't the goal. The goal is the national championships. The dual is training toward the goal. If current rankings reflect seeds that hold in March, then Suriano will face a tough leg rider in Dance in the national semifinals.

Trust the process.

I think the number of 197s that can pass the leg and scramble like we saw last night is smaller than the number of AAs in March. Cutchs work last night speaks for itself.

I'm thinking in the first half, the matches were over so quick, Minny didn't really have an opportunity to get winded.

I would the number at 2, Cox and Pfarr. I think Cutch has a very good chance of beating everyone else at 197. Sunday against Studebaker will be a great test.

I don't know if the low single is the answer for Cutch against Pfarr. We'll certainly find out. I was hoping Cutch would try a blast double. Easier said than done.

I saw some predictions of Pfarr majoring Cutch (which I thought were absurd). Cutch stays healthy I think we have a mid to high AA on our hands.

Am watching on BTN2Go.

Yes the Blue screen at halftime is normal.

It should come back when we start again.

Byers' radio broadcast is ahead of my BTN2Go by about 15 seconds, but I still like to hear his calls. He gives so much great info.
Posted this earlier in the thread but maybe useful to you too... if you stream Byers you can pause him and sync him up to the video.

First you have the Morrelli and Rasheed dilemma. What if Cassar comes back and can beat Cutch in the room. What does Cael do? Gonna be another tough call..
You send him to Opens and see how he fares.

But, unless he dominates Mouse, it doesn't appear to be all that tough of a call. Mouse looks like a sure top 5 guy at nationals. Unless Cassar is completely healthy -- more than just "cleared," rather able to withstand stress tests -- AND looks like a sure top 4 guy at nationals ... unless all of that is true, then risk > reward.

A few thoughts, without the associated quotes. I do believe some of them were a little fatigued from the number of weigh ins and travel. McKee looked fairly big (and he's young), so not surprising he looked the worst. And yeah, more secure coaches would probably keep the thought inside.

I highly doubt Cassar will challenge Cutch this year. Next year you shuffle the deck - Bo up, Cutch hold or drop, AJ, and Cassar make gains, and Stout? Gotta feel for Matt - could be solid #2 at 184 this year.

So impressed with Suriano. Gilman not likely to ride anywhere near that level. Ought to be a fantastic 2 or 3 match series.

Eggum said that his team was suffering from a Scuffle hangover. He didn't say what the problem was for the South Dakota State and Michigan State duals.

Not gonna lie, that's a tough turnaround for Minny. But I'll take it. Big seeding implications for Suriano, Joseph, and Nevills. And Gulibon now looking for a seed.

Suriano needs a 3 seed
Nevills needs a 4/5 seed... Unless y'all think he can beat Walz/Medberry.
Joseph needs top 6

Suriano appeared to be able to take Lizak down at will. Extremely impressive on his feet.

My suspicion is that this match does not prove that Suriano is "weak on bottom", but more so that Lizak is just a freak with how great he is on top.
