Ryan Shazier update....

Thanks...just hopeful he can lead a normal life. Very odd injury as it doesn't appear anything hit him in the lower back...perhaps some kind of compression and that is where the back vertebrae gave out.

Not clear about paralysis, whether temporary or long term?

Yes, the description in the link would indicate the end of his football career, which is sad.

Shazier has apparently maintained a positive attitude and is thankful for the support and encouragement of teammates and fans. Best wishes to him.

Hopefully, he's heathy. I think everyone agrees on that. Assuming he is and can no longer play, the Steelers picked up his contract through 2018. According to internet sources, he'll make $3m this year but stands to make over $8m next year. I would assume that $8m is now guaranteed and/or covered by insurance (his and the team's). So he'll probably never have to worry about where is next meal is coming from.

I thought the same thing when I read it but was afraid to post in question like you. "Dilly Dilly" to you for having the fortitude to call into question the wording!

I certainly don’t mean to make light of the situation, but “teleported” jumped off the screen at me.

Bizarre choice of words. Probably a mistake (obviously not Star Trek) but I didn’t notice the error. Assumed probably helicoptered.

I was worried when I saw the incident on the field. His lower body just froze. Sometimes it’s nothing and others it’s serious.

Thoughts and prayers for that young man. Was great enough for the other team that it was easy to wish he played for ours.

Having heard the words once "it's much worse than I thought", one must recognize that there's no sugar coating to follow.
I have thought Shazier to be a player who seemed a very good fit at Pittsburgh and have each year followed him closely, wishing for his success. Now, I wish only that he be able to recover and resume a life that is not impeded by the injury he has incurred. The human will can overcome a lot, coupled with the medical knowledge and skills available, to achieve "miracles". I can only hope for him that a fully recovery is within his, and Medicine's power.

It sounds like he has almost certainly already had a spinal fusion. Those come with a recommendation to never do stuff like play football again.

They won't have a complete picture of what they're dealing with in terms of his injury for probably a week. The inflammation and shock from the trauma prevent it.

Best wishes to the kid. Tough one.

Can't figure out why they decided to operate days later. There were no changes that happened after Monday night, unless he tackled someone else since then.

Weird.
Not a doctor but possibly to allow swelling to subside? I shattered my pelvis and they waited 3 days before doing the surgery.

Important to note that I read somewhere today that a "spinal stabilization" procedure isn't necessarily a spinal fusion, and isn't nearly as permanent. UPMC, from what I understand, is really pretty cutting edge when it comes to these kinds of procedures, so he's in about as good of hands as one could ask for.

That said, this is certainly not good news as far as his playing future is concerned, and it appears to even be too early to definitively say whether he'll walk again. From what I've seen, basically all this news means is that the swelling in his spinal cord from the original injury has subsided enough that they could follow through with the surgery that prevents him from damaging it further. But it seems like it's still too early to tell what the extent of the damage is.

That's a reasonable laymen's guess, but it's a different situation. I don't see how he could have a scan one night that said no surgery needed, at that time, to needing some kind of stabilization procedure as soon as he hit Pittsburgh. Nobody is transporting someone with an unstable spine if they don't have to. It's just, well, odd. I get what you are saying about the pelvic fracture, but that's not relevant in this scenario.

Yeah, didn't Adam T. stay in Columbus for surgery when his injury occurred? And then get transported to Philadelphia for rehab?

I do not one to be a negative Nelly or anything like that we all saw the play. That is not how you hit people. You never never never never never never lead with your helmet. My mind goes back to those days in high school just hearing my coach and it's still reverberates through my mind 40Years later KEEP YOUR HEAD UP .
Let's hope the guy gets better to lead a normal and successful life.

Thanks...just hopeful he can lead a normal life. Very odd injury as it doesn't appear anything hit him in the lower back...perhaps some kind of compression and that is where the back vertebrae gave out.
Amen

Wont know for 4-6 months once he gets through rehab of anything, all speculation at this point. Wish him the best.
