Ryder Cup ?/Ryder Cup Thread

Most points ever in the current format. Didnt lose a session. 3-1, 3-1, 3-1, 2-2, 8-4. Honestly, it could've been worse. Guys seemed to lose focus after clinching and pissed away some holes.

I thought Stricker might regret not picking Kevin Na, but can't argue now.

Crazy thing is most of these guys easily have another 5 cups together. DJ at 37 is the outlier.

The guys who carried Europe the past 20 years look old. These kids for the US of A may have a run of their own in this competition. Lots of talent.

If I heard the announcers correctly, Dustin Johnson was the "old" man of the team. I believe Harris English is 32 and everyone else is younger (could be wrong_ - almost of them in their 20s. That has to be a scary thought for Europe. Glad to see they are finally getting away from that Woods - Mickelson horseshit.

I grew up watching Nicklaus - I'm a big fan - but I'm sold on the idea that neither him or Woods would come anywhere close to dominating today's PGA like they did in their times. Would they both still be all-time great players ? Of course. But the total number of great players - WORLD WIDE - is off the charts. There's dozens of players today that have a legitimate chance of winning now. And you don't see the beer bellies and chain smokers on today's tour. These young golfers just look like athletes now.

Didn’t expect that but I didn’t expect Rory to go 1-3 and sit out a session, either.

The Euros have some aging players in Garcia/Westwood/Polter/Casey. The US team is just the opposite, they’re a new generation and they seem to take the RC more seriously.

I don’t know why the Euros take this so seriously. Maybe they are subconsciously PO’d that they consider themselves so sophisticated and suave, yet the United States had to bailout their asses in WWI, then again in WWII, and then had to rely on the US protection for another 50 years.

I probably have that wrong. /s

Both were lousy Ryder Cup players and I honestly thought that Mickelson had a shot (somewhat) this year because of his Major win. Just glad to see them go with their best players

Plus, whether people want to admit it or not, Mickelson is an enormous Dbag.
Can't stand either Mickelson or Woods. Just keep those has beens off of future Ryder Cup teams - I just don't buy that "experience" BS after what the U.S. did this weekend with those hungry kids

neither will play another ryder cup, but both will be captain's

Yes, they were not as good as they were at stroke play. But if I recall, Tiger won some US Ams at match play. Two of tbe greatest golfers of all time. But yes, their Ryder Cup play left a lot to be desired. But also have to give kudos to the Euros of that era…they figured out the formula to dominate Ryder Cup.

My guess is no one missed Patrick Reed. Good job by Stricker with his captain's picks.
I agree entirely. The only “maybe” was Berger over Na but those were good picks. And Johnson was phenomenal.

I have only golfed two rounds in my life. But the last few years I have been watching more golf than ever. This was interesting to observe as the players emotions were over the top. Golfers are usually so reserved. When the big Irish guy hit his long put his celebration was wonderful to see.

Got to thinking why this is so big. It seemed that the players felt more pressure here and were more excited when a ball fell in. And more down when they missed a shot. It seemed to mean more than winning a tournament with a big purse.

It’s not really Europe vs the US. It’s the strange phenomenon of team dynamics and bonding. These guys usually play alone against the rest of the pack. They are on an island, by themselves, and have to beat everyone. With this team format they know the team is counting on them and they hate to let down their teammates. Amazing how much they bonded with their former ....and future....competitors.

Team sports have a powerful impact that no one can appreciate if they never played a team sport. These guys will talk about this and feel the connections for the rest of their lives.

Obli, played it about 10 years ago. Regular Men’s tees and got it on a very very calm day. Posted an 81 with no lost balls or penalty shots. Felt like I was dodging bullets all day long…..because I was.
Wow. Awesome day of golf.

BTW word is that lefty told Bryson, after he drove the first green on number one that he must have a dick a foot long

You did a heck of a lot better than I did. Played it several years ago - courtesy of our Milwaukee rep office. I am / was an OK / halfway decent golfer - low 80s on most normal courses. Our rep - that I golfed with - with was a tremendous Wisconsin amateur golfer and it showed on the course. He knew both Stricker and Jerry Kelly very well.

Anyways, to make a long story short, I ended up in the mid 90s. It kicked my ass ! You said you were dodging bullets ? I was dodging incoming missiles all day.

I turned off the PSU game and watched the Ryder Cup on Saturday. It was far more compelling and interesting. I also filmed and watched the post-tournament celebration. The euros are way cool although I have to wonder how many are really euros at this point (Rham lives in AZ, for example). The Euros were way classy. the US team had a lot of character and the QA at the end was really funny. Xander is a hoot. DJ is really funny and seems like your typical bohunk guy. He just wanted to go party. Because nobody in the press had the balls to ask for it, Justin Thomas (at the end) called for Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka to hug. They did, it was uncomfortable, but they made it work. apparently, they asked to be paired in one of the early events to show solidarity but the coach didn't want that to distract from the mission at hand. he thought it might end up being more than the event.

Rahm is clearly the best in the world but Scottie toasted him with several early birdies that made Rahm need to be more aggressive and this isn't the course for risk taking.

DJ was 5-0. Many of the young players played really well.

Koepka came off as a bit of a jerk. He snapped at a reporter in the post press conference and swore at an official when asking for a drop (but not getting it). He was afraid to hit a dug out drain that was made of soil. Official said it wasn't in the way and it turns out BK did hit it with his follow through. Bryson came off as a super star. He was the only one to hit the green on #1, big on the last day. And he drove a drive 417 yards to which Lefty told him that he must have a dick a foot long. At one point, he pulled a driver on a 340 yards par four with the wind behind him. His caddie convinced him that was too much club so he put the driver back and pulled a three wood. The fans jeered and he stopped, looked at them and said "look, I am still going for the green!" and everyone laughed. He hit the green, two putted for a bird and won the hole. He also came off as a good guy in interviews.

BK missed a hole in one by inches that would have closed out the match. Too bad it didn't go in because the place would have come un-freakin-glued.

Agree with you about Rahm being the best in the world. If I was forced to bet on one golfer to win a tournament, it would be Rahm although the field is so spread out today that anyone of 30 to 40 players could win.

I was really surprised by Cantlay's emotion throughout the tournament. Typically he's just very stoic but let it loose quite a few times. I look for him to win a Major in the next year or two. Definitely on the verge of super stardom - if not already there.

Same with Scottie. He came so close a few times this year and I'll be pulling hard for him in the next couple of years. Just a matter of time until he gats that PGA breakthrough win. Stricker sure recognized how good he is with the selection though. Just a classy kid

You nailed it here. Several players said that the Ryder Cup experience was bigger than major tournament wins.

Ryder Cup exemplifies the absolute best of sports. Players not being paid, but they are dying to play and compete in event. All around great sportsmenship. Euro captain went out of his way to compliment Stricker. Tommy Fleetwood very complimentary to Spieth and said that despite losing, which he hated, it was still a great experience for him. Super classy guy.

Will add that I have watched several interviews with Rahm and he is a really good person as well as a great golfer.

Great observations. The other is that these guys play a lonely, singles game for the most part. They play for themselves and only have to answer to themselves. Here, it is a team sport. When you fail, you let your teammate and nation down. Also, the crowds are allowed to be a bit more vocal. And this makes the players a little more chippy.

One player, back during the epic Ryder Cup known as the "roar at the shore", lost it. Mark Calcavecchia screwed up his last several holes allowing the Euros to get a half-point when he almost surely had a full point. He went to the beach and bawled his eyes out until teammates went to go get him to tell him that the half point didn't matter and the US had won.

This weekend, while being a blowout, was never really certain as most matches were close. And this was such a devilish course anything could happen. Several gimme putts were missed. And there were the subplots: Can Rory right the ship? Can Bryson and Brooks play together without ruining the team? Can the kids like Catlay, Morikawa and Scheffler compete? Can Scheffler not get embarrassed by Rahm? Will DeChambeau's drives intimidate the Euros? and so many more. Add to that the course being so damned difficult on Friday and Saturday with the winds. Sunday, while being over early, the shot-making was incredible from awful lies; often dozens of feet below the playing surface. Even after it was over, it was great to see the shot-making coming home as the Euros tried to keep from being embarrassed.

But from a high-level standpoint, every game played at the highest level is fun because of the drama. I don't know, say, PSU volley ball but when they play for the B1G championship, you can feel it as a viewer.

Going into the week, I thought the Euros could pull off the upset. While they didn't have near the pedigree or the high rankings that the US players did, they were comfortable playing together and I felt like they would play very well in the windy conditions. But this US team picked a great week for EVERYONE to play at their very best. By the time Saturday's AM session was done, the competition was over. A lot of credit goes to Stricker for cutting out all the normal BS that accompanies Ryder Cup week with the dinners and the speeches and the other get-togethers that go on off the course. But the players stepped up big time. There wasn't a weak link anywhere during the competition, which is a rarity in these competitions for the US.

Other observations from the ground in a 'random musings' format -- I avoided any splashes of champagne. Didn't have the rainsuit with me and I didn't feel like smelling of stale alcohol...That course is incredibly treacherous to walk if you're not in the fairway. I nearly bit it in front of everyone at the 9th green on Thursday while trailing the Euros practice and having to walk from 17 tee to 18 green yesterday while chasing the Morikawa clinching half point was like walking a slippery tightrope....The gasps of the crowd when Bryson's tee shot landed at 5 on Friday were great but the cheers that went up on 1 green both when his drive landed yesterday and when he buried the eagle were pretty damn good. Not as good as being greenside for Spieth holing out from the bunker at the Travelers in overtime but still loud...I'm not sure if the broadcast showed it but Westwood took a little extra time on 18 after shaking hands with English to sort of reflect on things. That very well could have been his last Ryder Cup match. He alluded to it in his press conference afterwards, saying that he hopes it isn't but realizes it very well could have been. Same with Poulter. He showed some emotion after he closed out Finau. Poulter is now 6-0-1 in Ryder Cup singles...After it was all said and done, there were probably 100-150 fans still milling around outside the clubhouse trying to catch a glimpse as players left. They were rewarded when Sergio came out and signed autographs and took pictures with anyone who wanted one. He also dished out a new Euro Ryder Cup headcover to a kid as well as a few other trinkets. Then the main event started with all but 3 US players coming through a makeshift human tunnel on their way to the parking lot (others took the team bus, these players left with their families). Bryson's tossing out RC pins to people, Schauffele's caddy had a handful of various things that he just tossed in the air for people to grab, JT was revving up the crowd. It was a lot of fun to see that even though I got assaulted by the mosquitoes once the sun set...Cantlay's gonna win a major next year and Scheffler will win at least twice between now and the end of calendar year 2022...And as I found out on my trip to Madison for the PSU win, cheese curds and Spotted Cow kick ass.

Thanks...great read.

These players will be so much better for the experience. I think Cantlay, Morikawa and Scheffler really matured this year. BTW, Morikawa's girlfriend looked awesome. You have to respect Poulter, he gave it his all as did Westwood. Playing 36 in those conditions has to be tough when you are 40+. And then coming back and playing 18 in such high stress has to be a grind for anyone.

One other note, on one hole DeChambeau went back and forth on what club to use off the tee; driver or 3 wood. The caddie insisted that the wind was behind them on Sunday, and a driver was too much. Finally, Bryon put the driver back and pulled the 3. The crowd groaned and he looked at them and yelled, "guys, I am still going for the green!" to great cheers and laughs. He then drove the green. The announcers talked about that caddie earning his pay that day and talked about how valuable it was to have someone you trusted and liked on your bag. I was a little disappointed they didn't get more post-match recognition. BTW, they also said that lefty was a hoot all week and always seemed to know the right thing to say. A twosome bogeys #12 to give up a lead and were really pissed and down. Lefty came up to them, pointed out the crowd and said "isn't this GREAT?!" They both laughed, thinking it wasn't great because they just gave up the lead, and it settled them down.

At Napa, Phil was asked about what he was looking forward to as a captain. He went into a story about Fred Couples saying something similar to Keegan Bradley in a big spot at the PC at Muirfield Village. He said that’s the type of captain he wanted to be. Sounds like he lived up to that.
