Senior WT Trials Thread

Bottom line is you can't leave it in the ref's hands. DT looked great in the first match against Cox but didn't have enough offense in matches 2 & 3. Seems like challenge tournament took its toll on both DT and Dake.

Wait, is it true Cael was red carded? Doesn't that mean he was kicked out of the event?

Cox showed a lot of heart continuing with the injury however he did nothing but backup for 2 1/2 minutes. How was he not put on the clock? Between that and the condition of the mat, the last two minutes of the match was surreal. I feel for DT, he may have still lost if Cox didn't get hurt, but it was a 1 point match and at least he would of had the chance to win wrestling his style in a real wrestling match.

Those criticizing DT need a reality check. He wrestled a full challenge tournament including a very physical final with Heflin. He gave his all yesterday and just ended up in a crazy situation that you don't train for.

Very impressed with Gilman's run (puke)…. Really thought it was Dake's year; Great third match by JB but I hate that he has become somewhat of a dirty wrestler.

Zain is the freakin man! Oliver can talk trash all he wants but he was gifted his win over Retherford at the Open and I have no doubt ZR will beat Jordan IF he wins his appeal.

Overall, it was an awesome finals. One of the best group of matches I have seen in a long time.

That's such bullsh*t. This isn't folkstyle where you control what happens to you. This is freestyle where you have 3 active participants (2 wrestlers and 1 ref), whichever side has 2 of them wins.

Someone here mentioned before the trials that there was going to be a problem during the Cox match with sweat and there should be concern. Whoever it was, great call.
When DT goes against Cox, Sanderson and Cunningham should make sure Cox is throughly wiped and dried down (and as often as possible). Cox's body sweats like crazy (immediately and profusely) and his opponents often have a hard time keeping a grip.

They should at least bring back the church picnic games (the ball grab) and go full on David Lynch movie with all this bizarre crap.

When do the new weigh in rules go into place? Will there be any guys on Team USA that will be effected by this? Just curious as we hear a lot about it. Thanks in advance.

"Best drug-free team" then, JO, how's that? Nobody's buying the "innocent mistake" BS. We see this excuse used over and over again by cheat athletes, and it almost never stands up to scrutiny.

If ever there was a time for JO to go to ground and STFU it is now. Shocking lack of awareness.
Given the laundry list of things that can cause a bad test and the grey area between legal and illegal with regard to supplements, I don't feel comfortable speculating much about JO's intent until actual facts are known, but he doesn't know the result of his appeal either, and last night would've been a good night to sit on his hands.

I feel worse today than i did last night. Time for a lil tomatoe juice.

Also, im a lil peev still at clubbing zain took. I havent seen that since rocky 4.

Periscope has a full screen clear video for the Gwiz bout. Just showed the crowd, maybe half full.
Put this event in Pittsburgh and it sells out the Pete. Finally getting the NCAAs here. People will start to wise up.

I do not disagree with this assessment.

Outstanding tournament but I'm still not understanding why the defending champ doesn't wrestle like all the others. It is such a bias towards the champ. Give them the no. 1 seed and let them wrestle. That's what wrestling is all about. It makes the Gilman, Zain, Dake, and Taylor efforts even more remarkable.

I prevented myself from thinking how the Zain v Frank matches would go to protect against cognitive dissonance, hoping it'd be more collegial than their matches usually go given their prior coach-student relationship.

But if I had allowed myself to imagine it, it'd have gone like it did because how else could it have possibly gone? Why would they have wrestled each other any differently than what got them there?

They're both brutal junkyard dogs, Zain with a bit more offense, Frank with a bit more dog. I'm sure in the moment the competitiveness showed as and felt like hatred. But I don't think Zain has seen that level of fight at any point, and that'll serve him well in Paris. Frank wouldn't have done Zain any favors to pull (literal) punches.

Thanks to all providing updates yesterday -- it was exciting to follow. Too bad for DT, but it looks like Zain endured a battle for the ages. Very cool.

Now will DT still have another shot to be our representative or not ? Hard at times to follow all these qualifiers....You would think with 3 years to go....

The only way he can represent the USA is if Cox is unable to go.

I saved myself from replying last night when I figured I'd a stupid comment about the 3rd match between Cox and DT and try to make a reasonable assessment.

The refereeing in that match was OBSCENE. How does Cox go from getting a passivity call in the first 30 seconds of the match and never get put on a shot clock..incredulous. The ref lost all of his match objectivity after Cox was injured.

Being the champ and getting total 'sympathy' for being injured ..he allowed Cox to avoid wrestling and engaging the rest of the entire match. Understandable on Cox's part as he was doing whatever he could to remain in the match.

For all of those folks making comments about DT's lack of ability to seal the deal .. how would anyone be able to wrestle and engage with a championship level wrestler ..trying not to engage (until forced too by being put on a shot clock) ..on a mat that had the texture of ice ..for those folks ..I say you don't know squat and are talking out you know what part of your anatomy.

When has anyone ever seen DT or Cael exhibit 'poor sportsmanship'? The answer is ..never. So maybe folks can start to understand the level of frustration they experienced with the referring in that match..

I have no issue with Cox..he is a superb athlete and human being from everything I know of him ..was just doing what he needed to survive until the ref would (should) have put him on the clock and made him wrestle the rest of the match.

is that true??..I thot WTT's were held every year so you're saying Cox cannot be de-throned for the next 3 years? That doesn't sound right.

He was just tweaking Spyker, feeding the disinformation loop.

Nice interview with Zain posted on Alex Steen's OpenMat recap:

Zain says there's no bad blood and mentions that he's not wrestled Frank in practice in about a year because the coaches felt like "this would happen [they'd face each other] eventually."

If you were a father, meeting Zain for the first time, before taking your daughter out on a date, you'd think to yourself...this kid is such a polite, humble young man...almost boyishly shy with morals and integrity. You'd be pleased....

After a few weeks of dating your daughter decides to take you to see him wrestle. You'd walk out of that place seriously reconsidering if your precious little girl should be involved with this "killer".

First time offenders always treated differently

There's a lot of merit to this statement and I alluded to this in a rather long post on hr...my hope and expectation is that this is an isolated incident and DT goes on to carry himself as he always has before. I hope more than anything that he can find a way to break through and make a world team before he hangs it up - he really deserves it and if you're a fan of his or not, you can't deny that he's one-off the most exciting wrestlers there is to watch!

Nobody seems to making a big deal about the temper tantrum thrown last night. Can you imagine the outcry if Brands and Gilman did that? I guess its impossible to always have fun. Thats life!
Go to your own board. Get off of ours. You're nothing but a troll! Whaa whaaa whaaaaa

No, if we want outcry over their actions, we just need to go to HR!

Personally, I am ashamed with the way David and Cael acted and the wrestling community deserves an apology from them. With that said anyone making ANY excuses for the aforementioned actions makes them hypocrites in my eyes. The corner should of been throwing the tantrums during the match and not after David lost the second time.

Yes. Put this event ANYWHERE in Pa and it will sell out...USA wrestling will be very happy....Let's start the push for it now....For real that would be awesome....
