I guess it depends how you define elite. National qualifier? no doubt about it. All-American? Probably a good shot. But is he the level of his freestyle credentials? I don’t think so, but obviously still TBD. Maybe I’ll change my mind after his 2-1 TB match with Kane, but I doubt it.
multiple NY state champ so he knows something about folk!I believe top 10 in the country

Cole Mirasola just tech's Brown's starter in the first. For comparison, top 20 guy Corey Day beat him 5-0.

Too bad there's no room at the inn for these Mirasola guys. At least we're helping grow wrestling by investing in UW's future.

Been discussed (or at least mentioned) several times in this forum already, but agree that 174 looks to be Ryder's optimal weight class. He wrestled at 79 kg (174 lb) in the U20 World Championships only a few months ago (Sep 2024). Plus, Ryder isn't that tall and is already pretty well filled out.

I'm not sure why Ryder isn't at 174 right now, unless it's to better spread depth across the weight classes. If Ryder was at 174, not sure who the backup at 184 would be?
Do we already have a backup at 174? If so then you need a 184 backup. If not, then he would go 174 and back up both weights.

so EL have you forgotten where Ryder is wrestling?
Have you forgotten Busiello also wrestled at PSU?

This isn't about Ryder -- he's going to be good. It's about the idiotic notion that HS folk credentials mean squat in college. Ryder has so far spent less time in the PSU room than Busiello did, and is light years ahead of him. Busiello's FIVE state titles (3 more than Ryder) have not helped him at all in college.

Actually, Zach Ryder is a 4-time New York State champ, from grades 8 thru 11. He would have been a 5-time champ, had he stuck around for his senior year of high school at Minisink Valley (instead of moving to State College to train at NLWC).

But your overall point stands - high school folk credentials don't necessarily mean much for success in college wrestling. As noted, Busiello was a 5-time champ in New York. So was Greg Diarkomihalis, currently a senior at Cornell.

McHenry is the sole reason 114/115/118 should still exist.

Got big bothered by another 125 a couple of times, en route to a TF win just now. Other guy just horsed him. Looked like a 141 vs a 125.

I remember but not for long!

I’m somewhat wondering if the cut to 197 is bad for both Mirasolas and that’s why Cole has looked a lot more energized overall. Just eye test, Cole does not look like a weight class above Connor.
Think it’s more just the difference in athleticism between 197s and heavyweights is usually pretty vast.
