Spencer Lee

Oly red shirt while he takes on the 1 year sit out. Is the big10 rule a sit out or lose 1 year of eligibility? If the latter, I hear Suriano knows a good attorney.

Personally, I'm just not a fan of the undergrad transfers. I have nothing against Spencer Lee and know that he's better than anyone we have in the room at 125, but no thanks, he made the choice that was best for him and I'd just as soon see him stay at Iowa and for PSU to go it with Teske, Schnupp or whoever else chooses PSU.

Is spencer the hypothetical 125 lb transfer that we were reading about on the other thread o_O

But back to reality, against top opponents he has not looked the same. Whether it is health (and the cut being hard) or whether he has just lost interest in wrestling and needs it back, i do hope Spencer becomes himself again

It can’t help that it seems the whole weight of returning that program to its amazing heights is on his shoulders - at least these are the expectations from a lot of the fan base (e.g. The Spencer Lee Effect).

That should be the job of coaches, the admin and boosters, among others, not a 20 year old kid.

He is the soon to be AD, so he should shoulder some of this. I must add that Spencer Lee again proved to be pure class as he stood waiting for the handshake without any bad talk or poor behavior. The kid is a winner ever in defeat.

Last year at NCAA's, Spencer was wrestling lights-out. Now he looks uninspired, burned out. Perhaps he has some lingering illness. Or perhaps he's just uninspired, burned out. The previous poster may well have nailed it. The pressure of years of expectations may well have worn down his love of the sport. I've seen guys with great potential walk away from the sport just when it looked like the potential was ready to be fulfilled. Has the pressure of making weight and/or carrying the Iowa program on his shoulders finally gotten to Spencer? Or have the rest of the studs at his weight class finally caught up to him? I hope the answer to both questions is: no.

Last year Spencer never looked like a huge 125 pounder. Watching him wrestle yesterday, his freaking legs are huge and the rest of him looks like a healthy sized 125 pound wrestler.

I doubt he has lost his passion and there is no way he would be competing if there was a health issue that put him at risk. Knowing he always wrestled light in high school and has never had to compete while maintaining a significant weight cut I am left wondering if he has effectively outgrown 125.

Yeah I won’t count Spencer out, but at a time when you should be peaking in terms of stamina, there is ample room for concern. I’ll always root for the kid (normal PSU disclaimer). I’m not ready to say it’s a loss of passion or even a stagnation of development. If a coach said it was illness, seems to be the most logical conclusion. Credit to Picc, he’s jumped a level this year for sure.

He would have to buy new pajamas ;)
The S Fund can buy for him. :)

Lee Really needs to follow his heart and come back to PA! TnT are simply ruining him and PSU could use him at 125 :)

Can Cael fix him? TnT has him so screwed up now that I am not sure 2 years will get him back to where he was before he hit Ioway. Better stick with Teske.

Maybe the kid just needs to gut it out for a few weeks, then have a real meal (roast pork, mashed potatoes, apple pie) and then decide what weight he wrestles next. Some of these kids just need a great meal and acceptance they can no longer squeeze into a small.

I will never root against Spencer. Great Wrestler......Great young man. Total class. That said....He has definitely looked "off" much of this year. He has two weeks and then two more weeks after BIGs to get "it" back. I suspect you will see a better Lee going forward.

I have no issues with non starters transferring Gunther, Gary Wayne Harding, Chance and Lugo, who lost his coach. It was in their best interest to transfer. Even he who shall not be named did what he thought was in his best interest, although there was an investment in time and resources that were lost without repercussions... cost of doing business in today's world.

You don't have anything to worry about. Lee is transferring to PSU only in the minds of message board posters who haven't accepted his decision two years ago. (And maybe a few people trying to bait Hawks into a flame war.)

I don't disagree if you're talking about someone who has their degree or someone who realistically may never get the opportunity to wrestle otherwise (Shakur Rasheed for instance, had things played out a bit differently), but in this case we're talking about a sophomore who's a returning national champ. I'd feel about the same way as I did about "he who shall not be named". There are exceptions to every rule and if a kid is truly unhappy where he's at or if he's got some personal issues at home (death of a parent, etc.), then I'm fine with it. Obviously it's not a black and white issue.

Cue the happy photo of the Hawkeyes that has made the rounds.

It is FUN to think about, but it will never happen. Wasn't the rumor that he went to Iowa in the first place in part because he could manage his own training there? If he did transfer I would actually feel bad for the Hawks and their fans (a little). Can you imagine what HR would be like that day? Anger, hatred, and endless trolls, except worse than right now.

Would Mr. Lee want the binder back?

Like Pitt transfers, it is hard to wash the goo off in a short period of times. Often it cannot be done

goo
Dictionary result for goo
/ɡo͞o/
noun
INFORMAL
  1. 1.
    a sticky or slimy substance.
"he tipped the grayish Pitt goo from the test tube"
  2. 2.
    sickly sentiment.

Spencer Lee might have been the most college ready recruit in decades (outside his Sr year injuries of course).

IF (and I truely believe this is a bump in the road) he fails to not win a team championship or return to his Freshman year post season self, there will be hell to pay in IC and on the recruiting trail.

Every coach out there, especially those with an ax to grind on TnT will use spencer in their pitches.

Spencers success I believe is directly linked to TnTs coaching legacy and furthermore to their future as coaches at Iowa.

Rumor in Iowa, and only a rumor, is he has been fighting mono. Which looking at his performances, getting tired in the 3rd, being held out of matches, Brands’ comments about doing what’s best for him, would make some sense. He just doesn’t look like the same wrestler this year.
In my mind, it would have made sense to RS him this year if he is really sick. But it’s also possible he wins it all anyway.

It would be extremely difficult for me to believe that IOWA wrestling medical staff would permit someone to wrestle with mono considering how contagious it is and that it spreads via body fluids.

It would be utterly reckless and irresponsible for Lee to be wrestling with mono.
