Spencer Lee

They are to busy trying to have brands fired at the moment

You don't have anything to worry about. Lee is transferring to PSU only in the minds of message board posters who haven't accepted his decision two years ago. (And maybe a few people trying to bait Hawks into a flame war.)

Honestly, once he lost to Seabass, who really cares? You're not going undefeated and you only have to win 5 matches in a row in March. I get that Lee hasn't looked great at points this year, But we've seen that before (Mr. Wright), I wont get on him too much until he goes Bar-B-Q at NCAAs.

Spencer Lee might have been the most college ready recruit in decades (outside his Sr year injuries of course).

IF (and I truely believe this is a bump in the road) he fails to not win a team championship or return to his Freshman year post season self, there will be hell to pay in IC and on the recruiting trail.

Every coach out there, especially those with an ax to grind on TnT will use spencer in their pitches.

Spencers success I believe is directly linked to TnTs coaching legacy and furthermore to their future as coaches at Iowa.

Great points.

Especially since the HR mafia all believe “Carl” or “Bael” just simply signs college-ready #1 recruits, tosses them out there & the national title trophies just start raining from the sky.

No coaching required.

Whatever, if anything, is ailing Lee at the moment can't get him through a 7 minute match against top competition in a dual. How is he gonna hold up at Nats?

geez, throw more weight on his shoulders. imo, he has a shoulder problem they are trying to mask. love the kid but

It would be extremely difficult for me to believe that IOWA wrestling medical staff would permit someone to wrestle with mono considering how contagious it is and that it spreads via body fluids.

It would be utterly reckless and irresponsible for Lee to be wrestling with mono.

it spreads via saliva so he wouldn't be overly contagious but his liver and spleen would be at serious risk to be injured and so wrestling within 4-6 weeks of a mono diagnosis would be unheard of.

You must admit it is excellent bait...for trolling.

Yep, spleen is very fragile being packed with WBC and could easily rupture.

He doesn't have mono so not an issue.

In reading earlier posts on this thread, the example of Quentin came to my mind as well (Q's SO year, but he wasn't then a defending champ). It seems way too early to doing any writing off of SL IMO. Let's see how he does at B1G's and NCAA's first. I wouldn't bet against him.

It seems as though people have a short memory. Who was the last Sophomore returning National champ that went undefeated? Dake no, Tshirt no, Tomasello no, Imar no, Joseph no. Sophomore slump is a term for a reason. It is sad that fans place so much pressure on young men. Remember Q sophomore year? How about Mega's freshman year? We have been spoiled over the last eight years but I'm sure when one of our studs hits a rough patch we will have our share of negative Nelly's on BWI.

My guess is he is in the “after effects” phase of mono. Can affect him for weeks or months. Hopefully only weeks. Hate that this may be happening to him.

Cael of course. Yianni is on track.

I'm not understanding why is undefeated as a SO relevant. Several guys lost and defended. And Lee hasn't lost just once.

More pertinent: how many champs (regardless of academic class) successfully repeated after getting pinned?

Martinez -- and that was his only loss.

Anyone else?

That said, dismiss Lee at one's own risk.

You can look at Q's entire career and that redshirt sophmore year was a bit ridiculous compared to the rest of his career. Also, is Q a better two-timer than DT?

2,1,2,1 for DT.

But, Q went as a true frosh, plus he avenged his Honeycutt loss to win his first and took down the killer for his second. I know that the right answer is the Magic man, but I had forgotten how good Q was. the gap between the two of them is not wide, IMO.

Q hurt his shoulder his Redshirt Sophomore year at the Nittany Lion Open, that led to a
very uneven year. He finally rounded into his normal form for Bigs and Nationals punctuated by
his pin of Grant Gambrall. One of my all time favorite Penn State Wrestling moments with
Cael in the background slapping the mat.

There was also the reports that he was walking around the room with a baditude. I just look at Q's career and he wrestled with Ruth and Taylor yet he was an absolute buzzsaw in his own right. I would go as far as to call him a generational talent.

I remember an interview with Quentin where he said Cael, during this rough period, would walk
past him and say, “Quentin Wright, National Champion” over and over. He was the #8 seed at Bigs
and the #9 seed at Nationals and won them both.

yep - part of the psychology of this coaching staff.... the Win (wrestler) Win t-shirts. Nico with notes all over his life declaring himself National Champ... i am sure many programs do similar things but it is all part of their big picture.

Did anyone ever figure out what caused Andrew Alton's gassing issues? The situations seem somewhat similar.
I always assumed too much time injured and not being able to wrestle live to get into wrestling shape. You can’t just run and expect to be in shape to wrestle. Actually suspect something similar with Spencer in that he hasn’t been able to get into wrestling shape due to dealing with whatever he is dealing with
