Spencer Lee

Spencer Lee was in deed at the match today. You couldn't miss him in his Young Gun's tee shirt.

Oh-oh. Do you mean the Young Guns shirt with an Iowa Pipeline on the front and a picture on the back showing the cornfield in Iowa his parents just purchased. Of course, let's not forget the placard he was carrying showing a picture of his Iowa mail order bride.

Did anybody notice Terry Brands was missing from Iowa's bench Friday night. Supposedly Terry is in Russia for a freestyle tournament. I heard a rumor Terry and his wife were in State College this weekend to purchase some State College property. Also heard Terry's son's girlfriend was with the Brands visiting Penn State.

For a recruit (any recruit) to be in Rec Hall, or the BJC, and watch the Penn State wrestlers, has to be impressive on 2 fronts. The fans are awesome, but the wrestling is unlike anything else in the country right now. I know there are great fans other places (Iowa and Oklahoma State come to mind first, Minnesota too), but the wrestling, top-to-bottom, sets us apart right now.

And if I was asked, I'd tell a recruit to wait until he commits. Enjoy your high school years, take your visits, take your time, make the best decision for you and your family. I'll stack up what we have to offer, total package-wise (academics, wrestling, atmosphere, etc.) against anyone in the country.

I agree with RoarLions (I normally do). The product you're seeing at PSU right now is head and shoulders above what you see elsewhere. You are seeing guys who come right away and dominate their weight, score a ton of points, and look like they are having fun doing it. What other program puts kids out on the mat that are so young who see so much success right away? DT was a runner up as a RSFR. Nico was a runner-up as a TRFR and sophomore. ZR was an AA and took 5th as a TRFR and is dominating after a RS year. Andrew Alton was 5th as a TRFR. Dylan took 3rd as a RSFR. Look at what Nolf and Nickal are doing as RSFR.

Guys come into this program and they make immediate impacts once they get on the mat. They are developed right away to do so.

Out of curiosity, why doesn't Spencer just commit? Maybe he will flip, but it would be nice to know he is in the fold.

So Lee should commit right away so fans would know he is "in the fold"? Because it would be nice to know that. Uh, okay.

First, you're assuming that Lee has already made a decision and knows where he wants to attend college. That may or may not be the case. Second, even if it is the case, what is the hurry to commit? He has about 9 months to decide (or to make his decision public).

Are you sure Andrew finished 5th as a TRFR? I did not think that Andrew every became an All American.

I thought Andrew placed 5th as a TRFR. I could certainly be wrong. I'll check it out and get back to you!

EDIT - I was incorrect. Andrew went 2-2 (RD12) and just missed being an All-American as a TRFR. He never made AA status.

Agreed Roar, one of the guys in our group said something yesterday that really stuck with me, "These guys are reinventing wrestling after 6000 years of the sport" and I have to agree.

Speaking of Spencer, anyone have insight on his return to action this season? I would assume Sectionals are coming up in a couple weeks and he'd obviously have to wrestle there to be in the post-season mix.

The WPIAL Section 1 Championship takes place on Feb. 27.

Franklin Regional's last dual of the season is on Feb. 11.

Well that's quite a statement. I'd have to disagree about the 6000 years part. If what PSU is doing is "reinventing wrestling," then I'd say it probably has been reinvented a few times in some on this board's lifetime.

His decision will impact the rest of his life, so why doesn't he hurry up and placate the fans a year early? Smh.

A verbal now will have no impact on the rest of his life. He can always change his mind. He seems to have a strong interest in PSU wrestling. Maybe a verbal commitment would take some of the pressure of the recruiting process off him. I don't need to be placated. I'm just a PSU fan. Plus, as an aside, my kids graduated from Franklin Regional High School. So I'm a big fan of FR HS wrestling and want to see the best stay in state, just not at Pitt.

Since you conceded t wice that he could flip later, then why do you care if he commits now?

"Pressure of recruiting process" is supposition. His father is an Olympic coach and college administrator, and his mother an Olympian. They know what they're doing.

Also, verbal now + flip later means he puts himself through this all over again later.

You people are making my post out to be a criticism of Spencer. I, unlike some posters, don't criticize potential recruits or current players. As a fan of all PSU sports, I want the best for each and every team. It seems he has been spotted at most every PSU home match. It appears he has the interest. If Spencer decides to go elsewhere, I would applaud the decision. My life is not hanging in the balance waiting for Spencer to make a decision. See my reply to El-Jefe.

FWIW, I can guarantee you that the sport is much, much older than 6000 years. If you want proof, go to any good zoo and watch the orangutans or other simians playing and you'll be in for a big surprise. I picked up on this at the San Diego zoo many years ago when I actually watched an orangutan go for something very close to a single leg takedown and the other ape threw a whizzer to block him. The attacker then used a modern day funk roll to counter the whizzer. True story.

AgSurfer.......1st time I have seen your post and your log on here made me picture you surfing the corn fields of Iowa!!! Tell me it's not so:eek:

My son wrestled at FR in the 90s. We had 9 varsity wrestlers but we still won more than half our duals. There was no Young Guns then except Vertis Jones Sr took a bunch of kids.

Ag = silver

Correct. Like Stan Lee, the Silver Surfer is my favorite Marvel character. No connection to Iowa whatsoever. I'm originally from Harrisburg. In fact, if I was still living in the old 'hood, the Ruths would be one of my neighbors!

However, I decided to bail out of PA right after I graduated from Penn State. My primary reason was to avoid the weather like you PA guys just saw, and accepting a job offer in San Diego was certainly a good way to do it.

I realized after I posted that the other poster was probably just having fun.

Now me, I "did" two years at Iowa (90-92) after Penn State as an undergrad. Just some fantastic people on that campus when I was there as a TA, (and some really nice, "real" co-eds, too!). I'm not as technically knowledgeable as many, but I've seen some wrestling here and there. I probably saw several Iowa matches before 74% of the HR posters saw their first. It makes me laugh when they think we're only recent fans. Many of them started being fans only after Dan Gable wrestled his way to a 4th title while wearing a Black/Gold singlet

Um, Dan Gable never wore a black and gold singlet. He went to Iowa State, the cradle of coaches.

I'm ancient enough to be able to say that I actually saw Gable wrestle (live action) maybe as many as 15 times. That includes the time he lost to Larry Owings as well as when he won the gold medal in Munich. He was a great wrestler and an even better coach. Definitely an icon that all of Iowa can be proud of.

Uh, no. No one is construing that your comments are critical of Lee. Rather, folks are saying that your comments make just about zero sense, for a number of obvious reasons.

Ummm, he was wearing a Cardinal & Gold singlet....and pretty sure he only won 2 NCAA Titles (and 1 runner-up), not 4 titles.

I'm sure your saying PSU coaches did all that, not they we're well coached in high school. When your winning your always having fun. PSU and Cael are for sure on a roll, enjoy it. Just don't act like you created wrestling, and the moves that your wrestlers are using to win is something new that never been used or though of before. Some of your posters sure act that way, keep it up and you'll jump into the most hated Fan base in the Nation (Iowa will really be mad then).:)

I never said anything about PSU inventing wrestling or moves. What I said was, and I'll reiterate it, is that the PSU program is putting guys out on the mat who are having immediate success. Nothing I said is untrue. Whether that's due to the pedigree of the kids they recruit, the coaching, or a combination of it, you can look at PSU and see young kids winning early and scoring a lot of points while doing it. There are some kids that do it at other programs, but not even close to the frequency at which it happens at PSU.

Penn State certainly didn't invent wrestling, but what's going on at PSU right now is awesome. Cael Sanderson is getting multiple blue chip recruits every year and they are performing at a high level early. If people don't like PSU fans then that's their problem, and not ours. I don't care if you or any other fans like me or other PSU fans. Why would I? You're some guy from the internet I've never heard of.

Hold on there jrd, are you telling me you never heard of Mike T. I bet if you saw him, you'd recognize him.

Yea, it's not like Pennsylvania-product high school wrestlers dominate the NCAAs every year in terms of qualifiers and AAs.... Looks like Cael knew what he was doing and what he was saying when he left ISU to coach in Pennsylvania where he was confident he could quickly build an unassailable dynasty.

Togs, you're reading disability is showing up again.

We're going to submit your post to Wikipedia to use as an example of a straw man argument. :D

Mike's a man! He's 40!

I'm not worried about being hated. Every so often Mike appears to remind us what a hated fan looks and acts like.
