Stanley Cup Playoffs: Flyers vs. Pens Round 1

Went to the Flyers game tonight. First time ever going to a game in Philly as a Pens fan. Here are my general observations:

1. Really blue collar crowd. Not knocking working class people at all. I’m from Pittsburgh which is the definition of blue collar. But a much larger percentage of the Philly crowd is truly blue collar (say 70%) where as I’d say it’s 30-40% at a Pens game. So I think that brings a much different dynamic. Hockey tickets aren’t cheap, especially playoff hockey. So when you have a larger percentage of the population who spends their take home pay on hockey, it definitely ups the level of aggression.

2. Very whiney fan base. Ive always read on these boards how Pens fans complain too much, always looking for penalties, you can’t hit their stars, etc. Everytime a Pens player completed a hard clean check it was bloody murder. You would have thought someone went Todd Bertuzzi on a Flyer. Ironic coming from the fans of the Broad St Bullies.

3. Disappointed in the overall lack of knowledge in the game by a decent sized portion the fan base. Just subtle things you notice (like when clueless idiots at a baseball game yell balk when the pitcher fakes a pick off throw to 2nd or 3rd). And these people weren’t “corporate clients” there on the company dime either.

Overall had a good experience. Didn’t wear my Crosby or Kessel Jersey. Went from work with a few senior people so I kept it low key in order to not get verbally/physically assaulted. Sad that you have to think about that though...was never once a thought for the 25+ games I’ve attended in MSG and a dozen or so more in Newark. Definitely not a place to take kids. The 20 some year old female behind me must have yelled f*ckin c*nt this or that at the refs at least 100 times over the course of the game. I use colorful language all of the time and even I felt embarrassed for her. Seemed to be the norm, which ties back to my point #1.

I've been to away games as a Pens fan in MSG, the Verizon Center in D.C., and Wells Fargo in Philly. Take a guess which one was the ONLY place I had a problem.

Been a balk since 2013. if you are going to use a rule a least use it correctly

And while I am not a blue collar worker. Your comment is dripping with snotty prick tude. "went to the game with some seniors." Good for you. After pointing out all the blue folk in attendence.

It's like saying I am not a racist but man were there a lot of black people at that place. I dont know maybe you are also an anti-dentite.

Never in my life have I had a bad time at a Philly sporting event. Wearing Penn State clothes. Pens gear or even colors of the teams the eagles are playing. Would i take my kids there nope, but I wouldn't take them to a Steelers game either.

And before you call me a flyers a fan. I was at both games for the Pens in Newark and I try to make it out to PPG for a game a year. I didn't make it this year.

Maybe that chick just wanted to have someone f^&k her c!nt. You should have a been nice and offered. Maybe she would have stopped. And when I go to games, I go with blue collar workers all the time. My friends don't yell f÷ck!ng c^nt. It's not the norm.

Was not aware that they changed the balk rule in baseball....thanks for the heads up! And by seniors, I meant I literally went with senior citizens (3 guys...65, 67 and 70). I didn't say anything bad about being blue collar....I come from a blue collar middle class family. There's just a larger percentage of working class people at Flyers games than anywhere else I've ever been for a hockey game and I think that drives the intensity of the arena. MSG is like 80% corporate clients so you aren't going to get that atmosphere. Pittsburgh is somewhere between NY and Philly in those regards.

And yes I'm an anti-dentite. I also club baby seals and push down women and children while running from fires.

Very well said. I am a Pens fan. If I went to a game in Philly, I would not wear any Pens stuff, for the same reasons you stated you didn't. Went to the game at Heinz Field last season. Sure, we chanted Philly sucks, but I would never be abusive to Flyers fans, or use abusive language. There was a Flyers fan in front of us with twin boys, about 7 years old, so we especially tried to be respectful. I doubt a Pens fan in Philly would get the same consideration.

I was at the game in Pittsburgh when the Russians made the Pens look like a minor league team.

Mario Faubear (sp?) also hurt his leg in that game and was never the same player after that.
Don't forget, though, that those teams were not true club teams from the Russian league. Both Russian teams had 3-4 players added from other teams in their league. Kinda like the Canadiens of those days adding Bobby Orr and Bobby Clarke to their roster.

Based on the agreement with the North American side, CSKA was reinforced with Alexander Maltsev, Valery Vasiliev (Dynamo Moscow) and Slava Solodukhin (SKA Leningrad). The Soviet Wings had four ringers from Moscow Spartak. The results of the series were sensational in a way that both sides were able to celebrate emotional victories. The Soviet clubs dominated over the NHL clubs with overall victory (5W-2L-1T). The NHL claimed that the face-off between the NHL and USSR Champions, Philadelphia vs. Red Army, was won by the North Americans. The same happened in the game between the leagues' vice champions when the Sabres won in Buffalo.

Interestingly, one of the logos the Red Army used later, as I recall, was a penguin....

Time for my story about going to a Pens-Flyers game in Philly. I went with my (grown) son, a big Pens fan, who wore his Malkin jersey but I dressed neutral. The Pens scored a goal and, I made the mistake of standing with my son when it happened. The guy behind me poured his beer on me. I really didn't understand it but he probably felt a 60-something wouldn't do anything about it and sadly, he was right.

Well summarized.

I can remember just a few years ago the same nucleus of flyers (Giroux, Simmonds,..) getting down in a game by 2+ goals and come storming back to tie the game or some times even win it. And that is what I was expecting in this series, even if the Pens got off to good starts in individual games. It's really been a big disappointment, as far as playoff intensity and expecting a competitive hard fought series, which playoff hockey usually is.

What happened to Simmonds? He's used to set the tone of play for the flyers, but in now playing like he has 2 bad knees. I had to look him up on Wikipedia to find out he is only 29 years old, as he is playing like he is 40.... If he is healthy and playing like he is, I don't expect him to be with the flyers next year.
You want intensity, watch the Caps-Jackets series....

I'm still a bit tired from Tuesday night--thankfully you can pretty much get anywhere in Columbus within 25 min, so we were in bed by around 1 am.

I have been watching it (and rooting for the BJ's)...... and that's what I was expecting from the Pens/Flyers......

I completely miss understood. I am now not offended!!!!

In that case one of seniors should have asked could they "f#%$ her c#nt#

I hate that PPG doesn't let you bang on the glass. Drives me nuts.

Don't feel bad about pushing women and kids. I did that yesterday multiple times. But if you are anti-dentite I cant be seen with ya!

Simmons has been a complete non-factor. He is always the guy that gives the Penguins fits. If I could take one guy from the Flyers and add him to the Pens, it would be Simmons. Imagine having him and Horny as your bangers in front of the net on both Power Play units? Definitely a guy you hate because he's on the other side, but one you would welcome with open arms to your team.

Simmons was mixing it up a lot last night and looking to agitate the Pens, which is nothing unusual. But our guys simply skated away every time. After nobody took the bait the first 2-3 times, he kind of gave up and was a complete non-factor the rest of the game.

So was I. I think the Flyers wore themselves out getting to the playoffs, while the pens know how to manage a season and the long grind it is.

And some of the comments that have been made that the Pens are old and the minutes played by their star players are bunk. Crosby looks fresh and he is playing less minutes in the blowout wins (and losses). The Pens have some very young players that get big minutes, such as Maatta, Dumoulin, Runt......, and their "old" players are not very old - Letang and Crosby are only 30.

This thread is way too complicated. The Pens are a MUCH better team than the Flyers. I don't believe for a second that surprises anyone. The Pens were going to win this in 5 or 6 from the start. Philly doesn't have the goaltending needed to beat a team like Pittsburgh. Nor do they have the offense or defensive core but goaltending trumps all. Same reason why smart money will be on Pittsburgh (if they advance) to beat Columbus or Washington. Bobrovsky's nightmare is playing the Pens and the Holtby/Grubauer platoon isn't good enough to steal 2 games.

In theory, anyone can beat anyone...often times it's just very unlikely.

I won’t defend some Pens fans here, but I’ve been around long enough to have known plenty of Flyers fans who are more than capable of serving up their own unique brand of douche-baggery. Put another way, Flyers fans are not necessarily known for bringing “class” to the table.
Not everyone can be as cool as sports fans from Boston...ehh?

Vegas was the ideal situation for Fleury. No one expects Vegas to win it all and he’s having fun. I worry about Fleury moreso when expectations are high. Btw, Matt Murray is doing just fine
Well, the Golden Knights finished with 109 points and allowed 22 fewer goals than the Pens. They just swept the Kings as well. Just amazing for an expansion team. I expect them to give the Sharks some real trouble.

Fleury's issue was never and will never be performing on the big stage. His problem was a weak defensive system that consistently hung him out to dry. What he did against the Kings wasn't surprising. That's the goalie he always was. A goalie can only bail out a defense so many times. Fleury's performance during the 2017 playoffs proves this as well.

With my best Langer rasp ... Its a Hockey Night in Pittsburgh!

Times are good for fans of the Pens. We are so spoiled.

Sorry Philly it is just not your time. Better luck to the Flyers next time. The Devils and Jackets knew what they were doing in game #82 of the season.

What does this mean?

I'm afraid it screams "blue collar".

About 4 years ago, a Flyers/Pens game in Philly was on national tv. There was a pic of a young lady, maybe 24, who lifted her shirt to show an arrow pointed to her nether regions, and written on her abdomen was "Crosby is a..." with the arrow pointing to the answer.

I thought about that young lady's parents and cringed.

Welcome to America, where we all have a right to an opinion. However, speaking as one who has attended many games for the Flyers, even at the Spectrum, I know of what I speak.
You just classified a huge section of the city and half of the State of NJ as uneducated. That doesn't seem like a very intelligent opinion, but whatever fits your agenda I guess. Not to mention that Flyers fans are spread out across much of the city and suburbs.

Just because it's an opinion, doesn't make it correct.

I guess it doesn't matter. I haven't admittedly been to a Flyers' game in Philly in at least 5 years. Maybe they are all Penn grads at their games these days.

Or, maybe not.

I find it funny what some people's moral compass is.

I'd rather have that as a daughter than some nerd on his phone that has no clue what is going on. But maybe I'm just too blue collar so I'm uneducated.
