"test message of emergency system?"

I'm not getting recalled to duty at my age, and I'm very well stocked up on ammo, so there is really nothing that is going to get me running in circles worrying about something that I can't have an impact on - and anything that I can have an impact on I'm already ready for.
Counting on you to take out a few ICBMs. :(

"So Russia launches ICBMs aimed at the USofA.
In approximately half an hour the land-based ICBMs should find American soil. These will make up the bulk of both sides’ arsenals, and would, in the event of a “nuclear apocalypse”, be the biggest danger to civilian targets.

HOWEVER In the event of a war, this massive attack will be preceded by a sneak nuclear attack, because whoever starts the conflict will hope to minimise enemy retaliation. They know that the moment they launch their main attack of ~1000 ICBMs, their enemy’s Early Warning Radars will detect at least some of these launches, and trigger a response. The aim is to take out as many enemy ‘High Alert’ military units as possible in order to minimise that response, before the 30 minutes is up and total destruction of the enemy occurs.

That is why they will manoeuvre air and naval assets closer to the enemy to strike, minutes before the main launches.

Marine and aerial launches are a different story. A volley of SLBMs from an undetected submarine, or a squadron of long range fighter jets firing HGVs (Hypersonic Glider Vehicles) flying at Mach 8 or above, could hit the enemy nation in just a couple of minutes.

The good news is, unless you’re unlucky enough to live near a missile silo, Navy base or major airfield, you’ve probably still got 10–15 minutes to run for cover after the alarms start blaring."

got it 15 minutes ago. Article I read this morning says it will hit about 75% of cell phones in the US. Why not the other 25%- no idea !
Consider me part of the other 25%...never got it even though my wife - who is on the same plan - did get it. Looks like I’m going to be stuck fending for myself come the next big emergency.

Some may have had cell phones off or in a location without a signal. Some may still have phones that don't have that feature built in. And some are probably burner phones that were broken in half shortly after use.

I would prefer they just send pics of Diane Lane. I'd be real interested in that.

"Duck and cover"? If that happens we are all going to die- no warning is really going to make any difference.

I just want them to stay off my lawn- and out of my phone

Were you really that invaded? Don't have a cell phone then. Its a real invasion to be warned of a national emergency and guess what? You still don't have to do anything if you choose not to.

my phone only rings if the call is from somebody in my contacts because I really don't want to hear from anybody else- and that most emphatically includes anyone in Washington DC

Doesn't Hawaii have something like this, an alert system and didn't someone trip a bogus 'North Korean missiles heading our way" message?

I'm not sure you understand the whole point of those alerts. Just because it's called a "presidential alert" doesn't mean it's coming from the president. It just means in some extreme situation (like, another 9/11) that you'd get a text about it. No one wants that text because if that text comes, there's a really bad thing going on.

I get it- but I'm opting out- or at least wanting to

I was in a room with around 15 others on the same corporate VZW plan, some with the same phone as me. I was the only one in the room not to get it.

We already get these. I get alerts for emergencies on my phone.

The question is why presidential alerts

I don't know about others on this board, I'm approaching 70, but I grew up on several S.A.C. bases in the US of A, and "duck & cover" was the dominant religion.
I decided in the sixth grade that I wasn't going to duck and cover under a desk on the third floor of our school- I was going to at least make a run for home and a basement. I figured that being out in the open wasn't going to be any less safe than the third floor in front of a bank of windows.

Apparently Samsung Galaxy S3 on the AT&T network is not configured to receive this message and there is no way to enable it.

Seems like a major oversight by AT&T. Not sure why this particular phone would not be enabled.

anybody else get this? and is there a way to block them if you are not interested- because I'm not
So I've got my phone set to "Do not fing bother me" and my headphones on music blaring and i'm throwing weights around having a good old boy time... then suddenly my ears are on fire and I'm doing a WTF to all the startled bystanders... most annoying. Obviously Trumo did not get the memo...

I'm not the one who answers the text... I'm the one who texts, dammit!

Now, where's my damned ammo??

Funny, the other 15 sent out a message that you NEVER get it!

You're a moron dude. It's the emergency broadcast system that has been apparently been making your life hell for the last several decades. It has been expanded from radio and TV stations, to include cell phone carriers given the changes in technology and how people access info today.
