US Open Thread

Fun on the backside, if they both win their next match, it'll be PD3 vs. Gabe Dean, with the winner taking on Bo.

If this happened to Pat Downey, 90% of ya'll wouldn't care.
Bravo Sierra. If it happened to Downey in a domestic match, nobody would care because he's an a-hole. If it happened to him in an international tournament (strains all credibility with the assumption Downey would qualify for one), then he's now Team USA A-hole.

If it happens to a non-US wrestler and nobody cares, some of it is homerism, but a lot of it is: nobody invests energy into something that makes zero sense or they can't comprehend.

If you watch someone like DT or Mark Hall wrestle freestyle you don't have a problem with it. Zain-Nolf-and Bo have wrestled great and in two years will own tournaments like this the way DT and Mark Hall are now. When that is happening no one will be complaining. Yes last night sucked and the calls amounted to a rob but the PSU wrestling ethos is that all you can control is how you compete. I love the way our kids competed last night and don't see that changing regardless of the style of wrestling.

Freestyle is fine and can be very exciting. The rule changes a few years ago were very positive for the sport.

However, the keep monkeying around with the thing and the two rule changes that you saw on display in Zain's match were a great example of it. Fortunate that they both occurred in one match to highlight it - unfortunate, for Zain I guess.

Moving both of these to 2-point scores has wiped out most of the good that moving a TD to a 2 point score did (TD still worth more than step-out, which is one good thing). Also effectively minimized exposure. They made the correct throw equal to a TD score (which blows my mind in the first place) which it was before the rule changes a few years ago.

And having passivity a caution and 2, when the shot clock violation is worth 1 (and refs are almost forced by the rules to give at least 2 passivities in the first period and often give 3) is just brain dead. You've made it easier to win matches without scoring because as CropDuster noted - passivity is not like stalling.

So effectively the puds at UWW just rolled back the clock to the rules that put wrestling on the chopping block - not exactly, but moving towards that. Only the scoreboard will read higher.

This rant is not inspired by Zain's loss. Although I'm a huge PSU fan, I would be happy with either Frank, JO or Zain winning this (big JO fan here) and honestly I would not mind seeing JO make a world team one time even if it comes at the expense of a PSU wrestler. Zain's still in college and will have his time, and Frank has already won a spot in the Olympics.

I'm with you Dicemen. We're trying to force action and scoring, thus, the shot clock. Passivity and 2 seems to only come against whomever is leading at the end. Should be there throughout and not judged by score. I think the passivity plus 2 is crummy and should resort to 1. Also, in the case of 'proper throw', I think is bad as it only rewards the desperate attempts one would make at the end of a match. Is that what we want? What I don't like about the proper throw in that it was clearly a defensive tactic. Pretty soon the diving under the leg and funk will be considered a proper throw! If it's a proper throw you'll score as appropriate (design of the move). In summary, I like the two 3 min periods; the push out; the 2 for a TD; the shotclock as long as the criteria is maintained throughout the match as stalling. The passivity and 2 needs to be clearly defined and as much subjectivity removed from its application. Simple application or rules.

My comments are irrelevant to PSU wrestling but freestyle in general. As a fan of wrestling, I want it to grow in popularity. To do that, I think, subjectivity needs to be reduced as much as possible and scoring must be simplified and understood easily (first time anyone has heard that!). It has been mentioned here, the subjectivity simply enables Foley to say things like Iran is safer than Iowa. If international wrestling likes the foreign antics with referee's and coaches, then they'll maintain the degree of subjectivity and keep increasing it.

This is the first I have seen Joe Lee----pretty much a stud..I am assuming that Joe will follow brother NIck to PSU? What weight does Joe project???? 149-157??? How old is Joe--- Soph?

I was surprised how physically mature Joe looks; more like a Jr. in college then high school. He is a little more ruff around the edges technique wise compared to Nick but you can see he has a lot of potential.

That's an outlier. I cared when Higuchi got hosed in the Olympic final and I'd never heard of the guy a week before. I probably stopped caring watching that abomination of a tournament.

Nah. Even watching it for years and have tried to like it. But it's a horrible discipline of the best sport in the world.

Still better than watching basketball however

I was not speaking to any particular post but to the bitching in general. The posts like yours expressing concern for the sport seem appropriate PSU fans losing it over the inevitable ups and downs of our sport not so much. I have had as much joy watching freestyle as I have had watching folk style. I heard a kid say recently " in the end it's not about what the refs do or what's going on around you it's about how you compete"

Jammenz - I've been with you on this issue from the get go.

Now if someone could join my crusades against the metric system, centigrade, and the use of chopsticks. ;)
Metric system and centigrade are the same thing. And I'm with you on that ... hence the Metric Football jokes about soccer.

Chopsticks ... I'll use them in restaurants whose Asian culture uses them. Don't give them to me at the work cafeteria just because today is Cafeteria Bibimbap day. Have been to Cambodia and Thailand, where they use fork + Asian spoon, so don't give me chopsticks in those restaurants here.

Bruce Moe is a bad man!
He sure was back in the day. After a great career at Winona State Moe won a couple Bison Opens at a time when it was a tough tournament. I don't have his brackets but this shows the competition:

Bison Open Champions - 157
1980–Ray Oliver, Nebraska
1981–Bruce Moe, Unattached
1982–Jim Martinez, Unattached

Bison Open Champions - 165
1983–Mike DiAnna, Hawkeye Club
1984–Bruce Moe, Beaver Club
1985–John Morgan, North Dakota State

Agree. It's hard to say what weight he'll project to. He's gone from wrestling 105 lbs in 2013 Schoolboy duals, to 152 his junior year in HS in 2017. Conversely, Nick was at 126 in 2013 so his growth hasn't been as drastic. Brother Matt, who just finished his freshman year weighed in at 131 this weekend and was at 91 3 years ago. He looks more like Nick, but may grow more like Joe.

I see Joe as more of a bulldog type and emotional where Nick, while still very aggressive and stoic, is more technical. I've also noticed that when Joe loses in a tournament, sometimes he falls in the consolations. Not sure if he loses focus or why that is, but that is something that can be fixed. Both are GREAT kids, very humble and intelligent. PSU will be proud of them, whether they reach NC level or not.

Easy 1st round win for Manville. He gets 2nd seed Jesse Porter next. Porter trains Greco full time in the Northern Michigan program and won the junior title earlier this week.

Of course I'm experiencing the dreaded FLO freeze today. Every match is freezing. So frustrating.

TBF, experiencing some problems with certain mats as well today although fixed some mats by going to 360p on fixed resolution. Comcast sucks this morning as I am also experiencing problems with the CBS sports draft tracker as well.

Ok guys...I watched yesterday's action too, including the late losses, and felt disappointment for the wrestlers.

It's "the process", so now we forget about yesterday, and move forward. The guys will be ready to go, knowing them as I do. Time to cheer.

Was at the cabin trout fishing the past couple of days, so big Thank you for all the info.

Finally home and got to see Manville advance into the Greco Semis. Love seeing him rep US Army.

Just don't know what to take away from a greco match. Horrible sport.

I'm actually quite impressed with Downey's performance. Dude backed it up.

Not yet. He's got Dean and then Nickal if he survives that. If you follow his twitter feed, he has to wreck them both to back it up.

Fair enough. But he certainly exceeded my expectations after what was basically a year off.

There is actually some merit to guys saying they didn't get much rest. Sanders just beat Delgado and is already wrestling again in 3 matches against NATO
