What's an unpopular opinion of yours (as a PSU fan or in general)?

which of those years were we coming off severe sanctions?

That crutch is gone now. Now the coach has to be elite, it’s the mark he set for the program. Mark Richt like numbers are not good enough to meet that standard. Franklin has a way to go to catch up with Richt. Can Franklin be a Lincoln Riley? Can he even be Brian Kelly? We will see.

The crutch is gone now but you conveniently included 2015 in your comparison. It was not at all gone then.

Funny, but in one five year span (2005-2009) Joe had 51 victories. That was better than what Franklin gave us in the past five years, 49 wins. If you look at 2005-10 in those six years Joe had a 4-2 bowl record vs Franklin going 3-3 in his first six years. In fact over his first six years Franklin has two less wins than Joe had from 2005-2010.

I guess it’s how you want to look at things.

Exactly. I'll add that the team only had 1 loss in 2011 (to Alabama) before Joe was fired. And PSU also had a top 6 recruiting class until the crap hit the fan. I think the 2012 team had a great chance to win the BiG if not for Freeh agency.

Don't get me wrong, Joe definitely stayed too long. 2000-2004 were horrible and Joe couldn't even visit recruits. But he found a second wind in 2005. I think his recruiting at that point was all on reputation/legacy.

How did he know what was up? Before the grand jury presentment or after?

We have reports that Joe couldn't comprehend the accusations in the grand jury presentment.

If you think he should have known what was going on at the time, I would respond by saying that a lot of staff and players should also have known. I think it's more likely that Jerry was very discreet and fooled a lot of people.

If you think Joe should have done more based on MM's report I'd ask why Dranov and MM's dad didn't do more. MM had a lot more facetime with those two than Joe did.

My college roommate, and still to this day 35 years later my closest friend, really knows, lives and loves PSU football. I remember he called me years ago (2001?, 1995?) no clue when. He said there’s an awful rumor about Sandusky. He said it’s going to blow up. So I ask, if someone 3 hours away from campus and not involved in anyway in the day to day (he’s a way bigger fan than I am) hears such a rumor, how is that rumor not reaching joe paterno?
My other thought, and I don’t mean this in a judgmental way, is Joe was a devout Catholic from Brooklyn. This topic has been ignored for decades by this community. JMHO.

I think the defensive staff was running the whole program and the offensive staff was doing almost nothing, with maybe one person on that side recruiting hard.

Which camp Joe fell into was not clear.

Pretty sure that was not a mystery to anyone. Everyone knew that he was from Brooklyn and Catholic. What's your point?

I'm a Republican that believes in Unions and some Gun Control. Unions are necessary to ensure that the common man earns a living wage with benefits that can support a family. Also, our 2nd Amendment rights guarantee our right to keep and bear arms(I own 2 handguns), not the right to own whatever arms we wish and to amass a cache worthy of starting a small army.
In your opinion

Uh, the 2nd Amendment is for the purpose of having a well regulated (properly armed) militia, in other words a small army.

I had a friend who worked in law enforcement for a number of years not in PA. I asked him about his opinion on the Sandusky situation. His short cryptic response was that Joe was old, he was Italian and he was Catholic.

My unpopular opinion is that teachers are much more likely to sexually assault your child than a Catholic priest. I only believe this because statistically teachers are much more likely to sexually assault your child than a Catholic priest.

Oh man, I am going to get creamed for this, but the devil doesn’t like a coward.. .

I like Herbstriet and I think everyone who considers him an Ohio State shill or that his whole purpose of becoming the top college analyst is just to promote Ohio State from within is doing that due to a Penn State bias. He likes college football as much as any of us here, and calls it like he sees it - without a bias

There. I did it. I feel so much better now.
As I was watching last night, i thought he was overly-gushing for Clemson versus the other team.

I am indifferent to most announcers myself. Liefe has many, many other things to worry about or have fun with (thought the Fox guy who did the PSU-OSU game did grate on my nerves that day)

but only because he is over the top. In the 2016 Big Ten title game everyone on here loved him. Because he was applying his act in the other direction.

Since this is the unpopular opinion thread-

I think some kids are going to be processed out. Tarburton and Katshir come to mind.

I think suburban guys who drive pick up trucks are douchey

I think the phrase “blue collar work ethic” is stupid. Especially when it comes from college educated individuals who have no real idea what a blue collar work ethic is.

I think Taylor Swift is overrated in terms of her looks. I don’t know her music so I Can’t comment on it.

I think old white guys are the biggest group of snowflakes we have in America.

Good thread.

I'll start. I actually like Urban Meyer. Hate Ohio State but I'm envious of his success and don't loathe the guy like other Penn Staters do. I kind of like him.
1. I think we should stick with the electoral college.
2. I think that it’s ridiculous that my vote can be made null and void by a kid just graduating from high school who has done nothing. (I would like to see a system where all citizens get a vote, but you can vote twice if you’ve served in the military, 3 times if you’ve started a business and hire others, etc)
3. I think you can be a great PSU fan, even if you haven’t graduated from PSU. (There are some real jerks with degrees from great schools)
4. Joe was never proven guilty, so it’s clear he was innocent.
I guess that’s enough for now!!!

I disliked the JoePa statue immensely. The likeness was hideous, and the pose (raised “#1” finger) was not at all representative of who he was or what he meant to the university.

Don’t get me wrong, I loathe the cowardly administrators who took it down — but from an aesthetic and symbolic point of view, I’m not at all sorry to see it gone. The Paterno Library stands as a better monument to who the man was.

The "#1 finger" was not a gesture that he ever made. Also it was way too large and did not resemble a normal human finger. It was like a giant mutant finger.

Were you at the OSU game in 2001 when they wheeled that thing out and gave it to him? Joe almost burst out laughing when he saw it. You could tell that he thought it was stupid from the very first moment

How much shit have you boys eaten , thst it is your taste measuring stick ?
Just scrapple. I can’t think right now of any other food I despise. Brussels sprouts is up there but it’s above the Mendoza Line.

I remember how excited I was to try scrapple for the first time. I had read countless times on this God-damn board about how delicious it was and I was psyched to try it. I tried it, and thought I was gonna die.

James Franklin has just as many 11 win seasons at Penn State as Kelly has had at Notre Dame, and James has done it with four fewer seasons. Nice attempt, though!
