Wrestling: Penn State vs. Iowa Match Thread

you have nothing else than little unproven idiots getting challenged or overworked by competition that will prove to be driven by history

@mcpat will say rby passed desanto quite some time ago. More/less in the rules…but let’s be serious in realizing this is not good. Another freaking national championship without a takedown is a disgrace to the sport.

Clearly said in jest and yet still good enough to win by nine over the #2 Hawkeyes with the best wrestler their coach has ever seen in the lineup.
That really is the crux of the matter, isn’t it? That we beat the number two team in the nation by nine points and clearly didn’t wrestle our best match. And, frankly, the hawks executed their plan perfectly and nobody underachieved for Iowa for once. The crazy Hawkeye guys will continue to look for the little chinks in the PSU armor. The PSU guys will just continue to improve upon those little things. The.crazy (not all) Hawk fans will continue to look for hawk excuses or where we didn’t meet elevated expectation. I can’t wait for Tulsa.

I was smart, I didnt drunk post last night. Like some others. Lol.

My question why didn't the ref hit Brands for more stalling? Smart on Brands since the ref wasn't calling. A different ref and we see a different score.

Almost spilled my drink with Lee in a cradle.

Say it. Vespa cradled Lee.

I admitted Murin went offensive. Even if his hair is stupid.

Let's not run so far away. That kid has taken 2 of the 3 most awesome hairstyles of the 80's and combined them into one.

If I had hair, perhaps I'd try to pull off the Mullet/A Flock of Seagulls look. I'm actually a little jealous.

A couple of thoughts regarding the dual last night:

- It was nice to see Iowa get a taste of their own medicine when it came to crowd encouraged stall calls.
- Even better than that was the meltdowns I watched various Iowa fans have on Twitter last night when said stall calls were made. It just did not compute to them how they could possibly get hit for stalling when guys like Nelson Brands did nothing but handfight for the vast majority of the match.
- Listening to who I believe was Ryan Morningstar in the Iowa corner coach the lighter and middleweights, it’s no wonder Iowa has had such trouble against PSU guys. He did nothing but scream at the Iowa guys to “handfight, handfight!” and “smother him!” while the PSU guys weathered the flurries and still managed to create scoring opportunities. Pressure is one thing, but opportunistic wrestling is an entirely different animal.
- When DGK hit that mid level single on Cassioppi and finished quickly, it seemed like any breath the Iowa bench had was sucked out of them because Cass has been their closer and bailed them out of duals.

I posted my thoughts last night and admitted that I was a little bit more satisfied than many/most PSU fans, but came back this morning to read a few more pages of post-dual meet comments. The fact is that we're just damn spoiled. Yeah, I'd love to have seen a bit more offense from a handful of guys last night too, but it's not as if it should be shocking that Iowa tends to wrestle a certain way that prevents a lot of scoring, nor should it surprise ANY wrestling fan that most wrestlers (the ones not named David Taylor or Jason Nolf) tend to get a bit conservative against opponents that they know are fairly evenly matched. We won a tough dual and could have given up another match somewhere and still won the dual. A couple of our young guys (and Bartlett who's not really young anymore) learned something and will have something to concentrate on for the next month or so. Frankly, PSU is right where they need to be, they're the prohibitive favorite to win another title and they still have 9 wrestlers who could or should make All American (and 4 or 5 who could/should win individual titles). I'm good with that. If there's anything at all that I'm frustrated with, it's that we still don't appear to have someone at 125 that will likely qualify or score a point or three at nationals, but we all know about Howard's injuries and stuff just happens (and like every other PSU fan on the planet, I would have LOVED to have seen Vespa plant Lee into the mat last night. I used to like Lee and still respect him at least a little, but damn, that would have been enjoyable).

A few thoughts:
1. While I wouldn’t have been happy if the match had been this close, there is a tiny part of me that would have loved for it to be decided on the “first takedown” tiebreaker criteria. Really puzzled why SL just worked tilts.
2. IA stalls more at the beginning of a match to prevent losing, PSU stalls at the end of matches to preserve wins after scoring. You can make your own moral judgements about that.
3. There is a certain humorous irony to see hawk denizens preach the superiority of freestyle and bemoan stall rides, when their team scores two takedowns.
4. In general, this was ultimately a night for favorites, and the winners were generally those who were slightly more aggressive.
5. For those bemoaning a lack of o for young guts, see points 2 and 4.
6. Don’t like star’s dancing any more than brands.
7. A bit surprised that brooks didn’t make a final catch and release push for the tf.
8. Max was not stall riding.
9. cass looked like old fat mama cass. Kerk can handle that.

My take on the match, saw ALOT of guys from both teams wrestling not to lose. There were no real surprises and every match went the way I expected with the exception of Spencer NOT Getting the fall while RBY was able to grab one at the end. I know some are down on a few of our guys but I personally feel we are right on schedule to dominate at Nationals and will certainly threaten Caels highest point total there. This was a typical January match where his team didn't quite look as good as we thought they were but in the end make us all look stupid for doubting them. Look forward to the rest of the season and really looking forward to March where Iowa fans will be putting down their own wrestlers, calling for the Brands brothers heads and JS being brutally honest over on HR and calling things exactly the way it needs to be called as PSU will once again show the talent disparity between the two programs.

I will explain it again. This comment was based on conversations this week leading up to the match. If you didn’t read those then it wouldn’t make sense.
Read them all week. The back and forth of whether Star would or could major.

Still, end of the day the team lost by 9 and wrestled about as well as it could. I get the moral victories, but it has major PSU football vibes after a loss to Ohio State.

There are no moral victories. Just calling out one of the deranged posters on this board and responded directly to him. Seems to be a pastime over here as you guys have an entire thread dedicated to Ironbird. Shouldn’t be a big deal.

The difference in these programs is staggering. From results internationally down to how recruits conduct themselves. Like comparing Apple to Kodak.
I half wonder if he’s talking about Iowa.
For the most part, I agree. But Carter has put a few things out there in a way that someone was going to clap back specifically at him at some point.

Would you agree then that it's strange for so many PSU fans to be bragging about your 125, despite the fact that he got tech falled in the first period?

His tweet is mild compared to CStar’s posts. He’s a HS kid that was exciting watching his future team beating (at the time of his tweet) the #1 team in the country. Not a big deal…

Considering it saved the team a point in what everyone assumed would be an easy pin, I think it’s justified. It didn’t turn out to be as crucial as everyone expected by the last match, but that is hindsight.

When you have the wrestling dual meet Super Bowl, that might attract the casual fan, you have to take the opprotunity to try to grow the sport. See 2018 Penn State and Ohio State, great match, highly entertaining, had a few co-workers who are casual fans say how it exciting and entertaining it was.

Again, in terms of trying to grow the sport, last nights dual was an embarrassment to capture the casual fan. From 141 through 197 (sans 184), a Lawrence Welk show had more exciting dancing than last night. I understand Iowa was trying to win the dual they only way they could, keep it close and hope to score late on one move to win individual matches. The PSU guys were more than happy to go along with the dancing.

I will say Haines was at least able to generate some actual neutral offense and eventually converting. I understand Kerk, got the early takedown and then made sure he did nothing stupid that could result in him getting pinned to win the dual. Vespa showed what you are suppossed to do, overmatched, and he went out looking to score and got the TD. Had he not rushed the cradle, we might have saw the greatest upset in sports history. RBY was constantly looking for an opportunity for the big move and finally was rewarded. I don't understand why both Lee and Brooks were content to get techs instead of looking for falls.

What we saw last night is not a strategy to win a national title unless you are Kyle Dake. If you wrestle to keep the match close looking to win with one move at the end, good luck doing that 5 or 6 matches in a row against quality opponents. That's right, we see many Iowa wrestlers employ that strategy year after year after NCAA's witht he predictable results, i.e. Marinelli.

Overall it was a snoozefest. If I am Cael, I am not happy today with the overall performance of the team. Both teams missed a huge opportunity to grow the sport.

And as we post daily about who is overrated on Iowa’s team.

Maybe it’s more about the greatness of Ruth, DT, Zain, Nolf, Bo, Hall, Cenzo, etc., but I don’t see the same “score points” wrestling attitude as some of the Cael’s teams of years past.
I think Brooks has the same attitude as above, he just doesn't have to the back mentality.
I actually think Beau has a shoulder hunting arsenal but wants to do it off counters.
Shayne has to realize the power ties don't work as easy in college.

As in years past this is Iowas high water mark.

Dean Heil and Tony Nelson won multiple titles using this strategy. Not saying it’s the best but if you are really good at it you can win titles. I don’t think either coaching staff is focused on growing the sport when preparing for this dual. They prepare their guys as best they can and it’s up to them to perform based on their strengths.
