Lombardi: the speech...and the man

I have relatives who live in Cranford and spent 2 weeks a couple of summers there. One of our regular things was to hop in a couple of cars, get on the Garden State Parkway and head down to Asbury Park boardwalk on a Saturday night. The one thing I remember is getting on the Parkway near Cranford, Thomas Edison's lab was `near by and you could clearly see a giant light bulb on top of the lab.

Bruce Springsteen territory. It's a measure of Springsteen's greatness that some of his best stuff makes even New Jersey sound like a pretty cool place.

But seriously, New Jersey takes a lot of flak but I've got nothing against the state. In fact, I lived there for about a year as a little kid, 4 years old or so, in the 1950s and don't remember very much...or even what town we lived in. I think it wasn't too far from New York City.

One of the few memories I do have...definitely the most vivid...was of my little friend Patrick, who lived next store, rubbing dog poop all over his leg one day...for reasons that were never clear to me. Dude's probably running a government agency now...or serving a life sentence in some state penitentiary.

Cannon has some pedigree, he was a nationally ranked wrestler in HS before getting bone cancer. I think he was in the top 10 or 15 in the class of 2023 at one time.
Yes and that’s a VERY untold story. He has endured that fight throughout childhood, spending months at a time unable to walk. Flo, to their credit, has documented some of it.

PSU are a frean pin of LL away from being up 34-4 or something right now.
Yes just catching up with the board after last night. Took the wife to WWE for Valentine’s Day.

Genuinely surprised how much worry there was. Dual was over before it started and REALLY over when Bartlett beat that guy with a lot better skills.

Levi should get this W but Kharcala is looking closer to the guy who teched Mekhi than he has before
Yep, and that was also the last match where he actually had 2 good ACL's. His entire college career he was wrestling with a torn ACL. For a mat guy you may not notice it that much aka Spencer Lee but Kharchla's game is almost 100% Neutral on your feet.

Football Stan Drayton hired as Penn State's new RBs coach

No inside info, but I figure he's testing the waters where Seider left. He's probably having some big NIL passed his way and it's gotta be tempting. You know ND has to pushing hard and every other program listed are notorious for overpaying.
I believe that programs like ours moving forward will value hiring great coaches who also have previous ties (played for, alma mater, grad school, etc.) to PSU. Coaches with actual ties to the university will be more likely to have greater loyalty to the program. And if a coach chooses to leave the program it will be more likely because of a promotion vs a lateral move.

Coach Terry, Coach Barnes, Coach Connor, Analyst Andrew Jackson.....

Perhaps we are seeing a little bit of a trend in this direction already.

fun match! LL will be fine. Davis was really gutty but looked to limp at the end.... hope he gets 100%. Beau gets it done, big match. SVN - next topic (as far as I'm concerned). Sealey - opponent looked very good but Joe needs to create an angle. He'll be ok as well. Levi and Star looked solid and tough. Same with Barr. Had two good shots at heavy too bad the first wasn't converted and 2nd ran out of time. Future looks good (and crowded).
Minny looked good and Iowa was on a mission!

Not even on the same planet based on that showing.

Yeah, obviously, but geez, seems like something's wrong. I don't have any inside info on how Sealey has looked inside the room, but I did see him a bit in high school and he didn't look himself. It's easy to make excuses every time a PSU wrestler loses I guess, but I think it's at least possible that SOMETHING was going on there last night (illness, injury, weight cut, etc.). I guess we'll see. It always seemed like he was going to have a tough time finding a starting spot in the lineup at PSU, but you'd like to see him more competitive against a good but not great opponent.

Future PSU Lineup discussions

I get what you are saying, but I'll stick with Cael gets them to peak in later March, rather than more due to the other teams doing worse at Nationals.
It really is the other teams issue. The narrower field allows a national 5 seed to be 2nd at Bigs, for example. They aren’t necessarily doing worse, it’s that the other competition is in other leagues.

OT: Travel & Food ideas and advice

I was there 4 times since October. Love it there.

Me and my son were swimming in the ocean, when we got out a mother and daughter told us there was a shark right behind us. If your looking for a sports bar beachside tavern is the place to go great music, great pool, great people. The garlic restaurant is a must visit!

There is a very small pizza joint that I can't remember the name of off hand that has garlic knots that are right there at the top of the list as best ever.
Wouldn't it have been better if she had tried to tell you BEFORE you got out of the water?

It’s hard to see him AA without quite a bit of improvement on the offensive side. He is elite defensively but if every match you wrestle is a 1 td OT match it’s extremely hard to win 4 or 5 of those at 1 tournament against high level competition

Rocco's run to the finals last year: 4-2, 4-1 SV, 4-1 SV, 4-1 before losing to Star 2-0. Has anyone ever finished 2nd at NCAAs with 4 total TDs for the tourney?

If he and Gabe wrestle next year I predict matches will be won or lost by ride-out.
