Football Penn State / Wisconsin on 10/26 will be a 7:30pm Kickoff

Wisconsin plays @ Northwestern Saturday at noon. NW just whooped MD. I expect Wiscy to take care of biz but that NW stadium is really weird now.
Playing at that beautiful, picturesque Lenny and Squiggy stadium (actually Lenny and Sharon Martin Stadium). Smaller than some HS stadiums, and I can't believe it gives them any bit of a home-field advantage. Pretty location if it weren't for a major D1 college football game. Can't believe they don't use a bigger local facility while their $$$$$$ stadium is being constructed. Going to be fun for them going from a high-school stadium to Camp Randall on a Saturday Prime-Time game. Love the TV exposure for PSU, don't love a night game at Camp Randall against a team that is playing much better several weeks ago. Should be a fun night, and hoping PSU can pull it out.

Mertz career over with torn ACL

Gloating? It is like you guys can't read. I never liked the kid. He switched HS because his coaches and team hated his attitude. He got to UW and immediately get some superhero logo trademarked right as NIL was starting. I am simply saying that hope he saved money bc ACL tear along with bum college career stats are not pro-material. I don't wish any harm. It is hard lesson
You absolutely are enjoying his injury and made that clear

I disagree. By the end of the season, we'll probably see 3-5 teams that are "it" when it comes to having a shot.

It's one thing to win a playoff game as the 10 seed (going to #7 and winning on Dec 21)...it's another thing to then go beat the #2 team in the country on Jan. 1...and then beat the #3 or #6 seed on January 9-10...and then beat the #1 or #4 seed. That's an incredible run...beating #7, #2, #3, and #1 in about a month's time. And if the team was only #10 in the regular season, they aren't going to have that kind of strength and consistency.

History tells us that there are 3-5 teams in any given season that truly have the talent/depth to make a run like this. 2008 was one of the few anomalies in recent history where 7-8 teams were truly qualified for a title run.
Agreed but that 10 seed might be Bama or Georgia or even Ohio State if things fall a certain way. 7-10 are going to have a tough path but that 11 seed could always be dangerous depending on who finishes 6th.

For sake of argument...let's say the 12 look like...
1 Texas
2 Ohio State
3 Clemson
4 Iowa State

5 Oregon
6 LSU
7 Penn State
8 Alabama
9 Notre Dame
10 Miami
11 Georgia (say 9-3)
12 Boise State

Is it hard to see Georgia beating LSU and Clemson to get to a semis?

I think we'll get more chaos then we think because those 3/4 seeds are far from locks to be elite teams. Those 3-5 contender could often include teams ranked 5-9 or even a surprise 10 or 11

Ohio State vs Oregon

100% disagree with Klatt. The close up shows that exact extension he talks about. The CB falls backwards at least a yard or 2 while Smith makes his cut.

Of any call I saw all weekend (and I watched from noon until nearly midnight before falling asleep), this was 100% right and textbook. This was more blatant than the Fleming OPI call.
I agree with you. My first thought was that the DB was play acting to get the call. But at that point in the game, that would be a heck of a risk. He had to fall down because of the push and it was fairly far down field. They were also letting the DBs and WRs play physical so I'd not have been shocked if they let it go. But by the rule, it was OPI.

In all seriousness, there are 8 to 10 teams that have a legit shot at the 2024 NC with the new 12-team Playoff. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 2-loss team win it

College Football Playoff Outlook

Are you assuming Miami loses before the ACC CG? Otherwise, it would mean a 11-2 Clemson (assuming they lose in the ACC CG) or 12-1 Miami (assuming their lone loss is in the CG) isn't included.

If ND loses once more, I would agree with you but if they go 11-1, hard to see them excluded in my opinion. Not because they are deserving but because it's ND. The Northern ILL loss should be an automatic disqualifier but it could be canceled out by the A&M win, if they continue do well.

I also think this 1st year, the selection committee is going to be mindful (consciously or not) of not over-packing the 12 slots with B10 and SEC teams. Imagine the screaming if they select 4 B10 teams and 5 SEC teams? Not saying the spots wouldnt be deserved but the there could be pushback.

It will be interesting weeks ahead...
Yeah I don't think an 11-2 Clemson is a lock...a 12-1 Miami is...they need someone other than Miami to win the ACC IMO to get 2

ND at 11-1 is probably a lock but I'm not counting on them to run the table. A&M continuing to win is important to their resume.

See, I think the opposite. I think the committee will be most worried about backlash from leaving out an SEC or Big Ten team for, let's say Clemson at 10-2, with their only quality win being Pitt.

Definitely interesting and this is why an expanded playoff is great. There's a ton of teams (even Army and Navy) with a shot.

Will KJ Winston be back this season?

This is him walking with just a slight limp on Sept. 21st. So we know it's not an ACL, achilles, or a broken leg or something where it's clearly season ending.

It just would be kind of surprising to me that a player with such a slight limp would be season ending. Any word on the injury/update?
Did the injury happen in a game, is there video? Without that, no clue really. Could be ligament and he's already undergone surgery. ACL repair can have a much faster recovery time now but still it's probably the season. Or maybe its a partial tear and they think they can heal it w/o surgery but that can be a long time too. A bone bruise or something I don't think they'd say "long term."

Klatt going for the biased douchebag commentator of the weekend award, but I think Cowherd beat him out.

Big Noon Kickoff - Oct 26

I assume Fox's Big Noon Kickoff only does B10 and B12 games. Based on that, are these the viable options?

  • PSU at Wiscy
  • Neb at OSU
  • BYU at UCF
  • Wash at Indy
  • Mich State at Mich
Really hoping PSU avoids the 11am start in Wisconsin given our slow-a$$ starts.
Remember that when people start freaking out over the night kickoff time. Personally I think it's more beneficial to PSU to start at night instead of at 11am central

Does anyone else get 1986 vibes from this team?

Yeah, Wisconsin's wheels came off against Alabama when they lost their starting QB early. Immediately changed the tenor of the game.

USC, meanwhile, is...don't laugh...the best 3-loss team in the country. I mean, they're just a few ball bounces and zebra calls away from being unbeaten. Plus Wisconsin was leading that game by 11...in LA...at the half.

Rutgers had only one loss before being blown out by the Badgers while Purdue played a good Illinois team very close.

I realize...all of these facts plus a couple bucks will get you a coffee at Starbucks.

My point is that Wisconsin appears to be capable of putting up a fight against us...especially in Madison.

We'll see how they do at Northwestern this week.

Sorry, I'm one of those Nervous Nellies that some here laugh at. I just think we better go into Madison not looking ahead to the following week's game. I'm confident the coaches won't be...and will make sure the players aren't either.
I agree with you. Away games are always scary against good teams. Plus, it is after a bye week and we don't play well the week after bye's for whatever reason. They key is stopping the run against them.

Their QB is completing 60% of his passes with a QBR of 132. Allar is over 70% with a QBR of almost 176.

They've run for 1159 yards versus our 1207. They have a 4.8 YPC average to our 5.2.

Probably unfair to compare USC stats but:

  • 289 total yards versus our 518
  • Gave up 469 total yard to SC to our 409
  • Gave up 161 rushing to our 189
  • SC had 3 turnovers to Wiscy's 2. SC had one against us while we gave up 2 (3 officially, but one was the Hail Mary INT)
  • Both games were at LA. Wiscy was winning by 11 as you said, at halftime while we trailed by 14.

A number of fans think we already know how good this team is. They cite the 6-0 record and #3 national ranking.

I think PSU deserves the #3 ranking for now. Who else deserves it more? But the fact is we only beat one team with a winning record (Illinois) and they just barely squeaked by Purdue in OT. So can we beat OSU? Can we sweep Wisconsin, Washington, and Minnesota? We'll find out one game at a time.
USC beat Wisconsin 38-21.
Alabama blew them out also.

Stop freaking out.

I think that 2nd bid for the ACC and ND is very much in doubt

I never really liked the kid as he was kind of arrogant 5 star douche coming out of HS. I was a fan of his critical INTS when playing PSU. He made a mistake playing for UW ie where QBs go to die. (Wilson was really NC ST product). Still, he ate some humble pie and ended up in cherry role as starting FL QB. Hope he saved NIL money though. Pro career is lost now.
He left Wisconsin after Chryst was fired just a few games into the 2022 season and they had the interim Jim Leonard experiment. I am not sure if he left before or after they hired Luke Fickell but his career was totally mismanaged by Wisconsin in those crazy years.
