Aiden Hutchinson

Yep 🥴 Any word on how he is doing?
All I know is that he required surgery and is out for the season. he had that surgery in Hershey PA with his coach in the building. So that means he must have had it the next day.

Next National Champ.

These CCGs need to go. For example, why should OSU get another shot at Oregon if it plays out that way? They beat Oregon in the CCG then they are the B10 champ. With that said, if we run the table and play Oregon in the CCG then at least there are two teams playing who have not played and it is settled on the field and not by some biased committee.

Overall though, the CCG don't serve a purpose beyond giving money to the networks. With a 12 team playoff that starts up I think around the 20th of December all the teams could really use that week off to recuperate. As for how they crown the conference champions if there are two or more teams tied, they just revert to a tiebreaker system like what the NFL does or something similar.

I just read the CFB playoff format and they talk about a 5th conference champion. What conference is this or is it the highest ranked team outside the power 4 and the conference could be any conference?
It's just the top 5 highest ranked champs. None of the P4 are technically guaranteed a spot though their champs will always be in.

And CCGs are and have always been dumb. Even worse now with the playoff. Not playing an extra game can be an advantage.

Does anyone else get 1986 vibes from this team?

I thought of this too but I personally do not. I am very concerned about our defense. I know we tightened it up in the second half but am mindful of several calls that went out way. Two where a weird blocking below the waist thing and two were non-PI calls. Now, I think the refs let the DBs be very physical for both teams. For example, on the Warren TD where he both snapped and caught the ball, there was blatant pass interference.

Regardless, our D was ripped defending the running game and screens. tOSU has a better offense and will expose us if Allen doesn't up our D--Game.

I agree. Saw a youtube yesterday with someone from PFF and he says PSU secondary is good but not great, probably doesn't have the players to match up with Top 5 teams' receivers in man. Says PSU needs to get comfortable playing zone because they're going to need it later if they don't want to give up big plays.

PSU's D-line is very good but not overwhelming. Linebackers are good to very good. Secondary is good to very good. The D played great at times against USC but they also got their butts kicked at times. Fortunately they played well when the game was on the line.

At some point you have to accept what the stats say about this defense. They can give up points in bunches. Which was certainly not true in 1986. That defense had great players all over the field.

Based on the first surgery being in January, I wouldn't be surprised if he started to do contact drills prematurely. I hope that's the case because if not, then you have to have concern that his body just may not be able to stand the rigors of this sport, and especially at that position.
Possibly.

But there are too many unknown variables to even draw an educated guess at this point in time.

I wonder if he plans on enrolling early and doing his rehab under the supervision of PSU's medical and training staff?

Linebacker Play & Injury Status of Wylie

What is the general consensus of how we are performing from this position group? I could not watch the USC game live until the last 6 minutes of regulation so I have not had a chance to do an evaluation of how the LBs played. Clearly the 75 yard reverse was not good but wondering about the game as a whole. I'm thinking they were only average as the USC RB Marks had a big game and they put up good offensive numbers. Was there anything the LBs were not doing?

How did Rojas look, is he improving or not? Who else played meaningful snaps beyond, Rojas, King and Deluca? Robinson, Nelson?

Finally, anyone have any idea on the status of Wylie?
IMHO the linebackers underperformed as did the DL. The secondary was pretty good.

  • Lincoln Riley is a great HC with a very good offensive scheme. He's got a senior QB that played really well. He's got a strong arm and makes good decisions. And USC's RBs are as good as we'll see. The announcers made fun of themselves the entire day as they got into a mild argument of the strength of USC's O. LR said the RBs and the announcers kept insisting it was the WRs. Regardless, it shows you how good they are at the skill positions. For example, they often let our DEs in with little blocking but threw it right over them to a RB who had a lot of YAC.
  • I thought the LBers had trouble adjusting to USC's speed. They often took bad routes and weren't well-positioned to make plays on good RBs. By that, I mean that you have to use your body and not your arms. If you are out of position, you are grasping. And that is what our LBers did all first half. They seemed to adjust in the second half but USC's offense is just good so USC was able to move the ball but didn't post a lot of points.
  • I felt the LBers were trying to make "that big play" and often over pursued. They were hopelessly out of position on several screen plays. This is a tough call because you want them to be aggressive but still defend their assignment. With the two points above, they were often out of position and didn't get to make plays on the ball. Sometimes, that comes with trusting your fellow player. When the offense is moving the ball on you, the tendency is to try too hard and that leads to being out of position. You can't play two positions. So you have to first take care of your own assignment. I think they needed the halftime to settle down and stop panicking.

Oregon OSU ending getting NCAA review

A couple things to add.

The Oregon 12 man thing is similar to the Bielema intentional kickoff penalty. The NCAA changed clock rules for the kickoff that year and they will change rules for 12 men, the only question is when. It sounds possible the rules change will be immediate, i.e. this week, because of the potential for this to really cause problems.

Another thing I read recently -- I don't know if it's true -- is that Bielema did the kickoff OB trick at Penn State not to hurt Penn State but because he wanted to force the rule change. He thought the loophole should be closed before it did affect the outcome of a game. He intentionally picked a situation where it would not matter. This actually rings true to me. At the time he did it, I wondered, why would he bother because it was just a few secs left of the 1st half, it wasn't a situation where PSU had any significant change of scoring.

I used to dislike Bielema but I've changed my mind about him after listening to some pregame and postgame interviews. He is a real lover of the game and respectful of opposing coaches. Spoke very sincerely about how much he admires what Franklin has accomplished at PSU -- it was almost like he was saying to PSU fans, you need to appreciate Franklin because what he's done at PSU, that kind of sustained excellence, is really hard to do.

Per NittanySportsNow, it appears that he had this shoulder surgery in January:

"I’m practicing three days a week with our high school team now and also have been doing personal training throughout the summer,” Tatsch tells NSN. “It’s been going well. I’m getting faster and stronger and have been able to get a lot of strength back. I had shoulder surgery in January and have been able to get a lot of my strength back. Overall, I’m doing good.”

“I’m not really training to get down to a specific time. With the guy I’m training with, it’s for explosiveness and speed overall. Change of direction, linear speed, vertical jumping, all that stuff.”

When he’s not working on getting himself better, Tatsch is working to make money at his job. Aside from that, Tatsch is living in the moment before life changes next summer.

“I have a job so I’m working but really just hanging out with my buddies a lot since this is our last summer together,” said Tatsch. “I don’t want things to speed up, just trying to take in every moment I can this summer. I’m going to enjoy the summer, enjoy being in high school and try to take everything slow.”
