Basketball PRESS RELEASE: Peter and Ann Tombros Endow Men’s Basketball Head Coaching Position

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Peter and Ann Tombros have endowed the Penn State men's basketball head coaching position as part of their new $26 million commitment to the University. The Tombroses' gift will establish a fund to enhance opportunities for student-athletes through scholarships, travel, equipment and other needs.

"We are so thankful to Peter and Ann for their commitment to our men's basketball program," said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour. "It is so fitting to have their longtime support of Penn State Basketball recognized by naming the men's basketball head coaching position after Peter and Ann. Their generosity has impacted so many at the University, but particularly a wide variety of our Penn State Athletics programs."

Ardent supporters of Penn State Athletics, the Tombroses have a long history with the men's basketball program, playing an instrumental role in renovations to the basketball program's training table and film room, as well as the team's locker room, athletic training and weight rooms.

"Our entire men's basketball program is incredibly grateful for the support of Peter and Ann Tombros," said Peter and Ann Tombros Men's Basketball Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry. "In the short time I've been at Penn State, the Tombroses' love for Penn State and our student-athletes has been immensely apparent. Their generous support has and continues to impact and strengthen the men's basketball student-athlete experience at Penn State and make a true difference in our program."

In addition to their support of the men's basketball program, the Tombroses have also made significant impact on several other Intercollegiate Athletics programs, including men's and women's golf with the Tombros Varsity Clubhouse. The Tombroses have also been key contributors to the Football Excellence Fund, Panzer Lacrosse Stadium and Nittany Lion Softball Park, and they have supported numerous endowed scholarships.

"Penn State's Intercollegiate Athletics programs have been a source of great pride and pleasure for us and for so many Penn Staters over the years," said Peter Tombros. "Ann and I are glad to support both Coach Shrewsberry and future head coaches who will offer their leadership and mentorship to the men's basketball players who give their all for Penn State and who will continue to make us proud in their lives beyond the court."

This gift to endow the men's basketball head coach position is part of a new $26 million commitment from the Tombroses that supports Intercollegiate Athletics, the College of Agricultural Sciences, Penn State Health and the College of Arts and Architecture. The commitment places the Tombroses among the top five donors in the University's history.

Support from the Tombroses will advance "A Greater Penn State for 21st Century Excellence," a focused campaign that seeks to elevate Penn State's position as a leading public university in a world defined by rapid change and global connections. With the support of alumni and friends, "A Greater Penn State" seeks to fulfill the three key imperatives of a 21st-century public university: keeping the doors to higher education open to hardworking students regardless of financial well-being; creating transformative experiences that go beyond the classroom; and impacting the world by serving communities and fueling discovery, innovation and entrepreneurship. FC: Matt Rhule: Pros and Cons

There are a fair number of people on the board who, if they had the power to do so, would replace CJF with Matt Rhule today. For some, he is by far the top choice. His coaching record to this point is:

Matt Ruhle
Career: NFL: 8–15 (.348)
NCAA: 47–43 (.522)
Bowls: 1–2 (.333)

His Baylor teams never defeated a ranked team. I'm not saying that he wouldn't be a good choice, just that is not based on his coaching record to date. What is the best argument for making Matt Rhule the next head coach at PSU?

We Are ...

- feeling kind of nostalgic, as this is the last PSU game thread we're setting up on this site
- hoping that PSU will do something special in the game, and make the thread and the evening enjoyable
- anxious to see how PSU adapts their D to account for PJ's absence
- curious to see what drinks @Midnighter2 puts together and serves at the bar
- thankful to have created, and participated with so many of you over the years, in a PSU football game thread, and looking forward to doing it in the future at a different location

... Penn State!!!!!!!!

Tom McAndrew --- you will be missed

I hope there is a way that you will be able to still contribute in some manner to the changing board and ownership situations. IMO, you are a great guy and a class act who has a wide range of interests and knowledge combined with exceptional tact and common sense. We need to find a way to ensure that we can somehow retain and benefit from your considerable insights and contributions.

Here is your resume...YOU decide if he needs fired...

65-30 won loss record after the next game

1 Big Ten championship in 8 years

1-8 against Ohio State and the win was 5 years ago

3-4 in games after a bye with all 4 losses at home in what is regarded as one of the biggest home field advantages in college football

In 2017 with what was your best team, you lose to Ohio State with a 3 touchdown lead, then lose the next game to an underdog Michigan State

In 2018 once again you lose to Ohio St with a 2 score lead and once again lose at home after a bye week to an underdog team

In 2020 you set an all time school record for worst start and you finish 4-5

In 2021 the exact same trend continues as you lose to the worst team in the conference after a bye week to a 24 point underdog

In 8 years you have failed to develop a competitive, even average offensive line that is capable of moving defensive linemen, even FCS Villanova

You are 9-8 since 2020

You cannot develop quarterbacks

You are incapable of rational clock management during games and decision making in general during games

There. Is this what your penn state deserves? Or do want better?

New Allar - Ewers - Franklin Rumors-Info

To start with, I've picked the following info off of several boards in the last 24 to 48 hours. Take a stroll through several Buckeye and Texas (and A&M) if you don't believe me, take a look for yourselves.

Like I've mentioned on several occasion, IMO, Mullet (Ewers) will never see the field at OSU. He's a prima donna that expected to come in and set the world on fire - it isn't happening. He screwed OSU's QB plans up when he reclassified and Day wasn't happy about it. Day recently said he has a lot to learn and a long way to go . He's behind the 3 other QBs and won't see the field - at least - until Stroud leaves in another year or two. And both Miller and McCord are both in front of him - especially McCord. Ewers didn't make the trip - with the rest of the team - to Indiana last Saturday

The rumors are running wild - especially on the Texas and Buckeye boards - that it's a 100% given that Ewers will be transferring out (portal) and Texas A&M is his likely destination. FWIW, supposedly Jimbo is still in the kid's ear and wants him badly. I's all but a done deal at the end of the year. Plus, Ewers is homesick with complicates matters.

With Jack Miller probably transferring back to a West coast team - more likely Arizona or ASU - at the end of the year, that will only leave Stroud (1 more year) and McCord on the roster. OSU is really going hard now after both Allar and D. Brown (USC commit) and are using the coaching uncertainties of both schools to their advantage. Their really hammering Allar - who grew up a Buckeye fan - about the possibility of Franklin leaving. Supposedly he'll be at the OSU-PSU game Saturday night as guest of the Buckeyes.....not sure about this one - maybe someone can confirm this rumor. And Allar is starting to listen. The best thing that Franklin can do RIGHT NOW is deny all of the leaving rumors to keep your class intact.

James Franklin is exactly the person the BOT and AD want in a head coach

He runs a positive, clean and competitive enough program to keep PSU relevant on a national stage without seeming like football is all that matters. Franklin puts the mental, emotional and physical health of his players above the winning at all cost mentality that the perennially elite programs, in terms of playoff appearances, probably don't have. Don't underestimate the affect that the Sandusky scandal is still having on the perception of Penn State University around the country. It was that win at all cost mentality that was placed on PSU when the Sandusky scandal broke. The football program was predicted to take 10 years to recover from the devastating sanctions placed upon it. As an alum, I appreciate James Franklin and the way he runs the football program. I'm proud to say he is the face of PSU football and want him around for many years to come.
