Have we weathered this latest storm?

I actually expected more piling from the media but save for a few local and national sports journalists with an axe to grind, I didn't see come across any major national headlines. Maybe it will take a few days for the big media corporations to write their fiction--but perhaps the media and public have grown weary of this story as they've already made up their minds about what happened at PSU.

So let me get this straight. For those of you who believe the allegations against Joe Paterno.

You obviously think Joe is a despicable man. So focused on winning football games he was willing to do anything and that includes not reporting child molestation so his defensive coach can still coach….So that is your thinking right? Someone who is that despicable would certainly not chose to be that despicable only in child molestation reporting scenarios, he would also likely be despicable in many other parts of his life to gain an edge on the football field, correct?

So please explain to me why this “despicable” man had no skeletons in his closet regarding his life in any other aspect. Remember when it was discovered there was an FBI file on Joe that some media outlet get their hands on, that was going to be the Uhh Huh moment where the real truth on Joe would be exposed. Oh wait, what..That turned out to be absolutely nothing. There are more than 900 pages in Joe Paterno's FBI file, but not a single mention of Jerry Sandusky. Obviously the FBI was covering up for this despicable man otherwise we would all get to see those skeletons..... right...

Someone this despicable in their personal life no doubt had several marriages and cheating scandals. Oh wait, he married once in 1962 and remained married until his death in 2012.

This despicable man obviously willing to do anything to win no doubt would interfere with the local police when it came to protecting his football players from trouble… Oh wait…. District Judge: 'Never Once' Any Sign Paterno Tampered in Justice System I've lived and worked in State College for the past 41 years: 25 with the State College Police Department, one year of retirement, and 15 years as a magisterial district judge. The events of the past few months have disturbed my family and me, just like they have everyone else. Never once in my time as a police officer or judge has anyone in the football program asked me to cover up anything, withdraw a charge, or do something else unethical. I certainly saw a number of players get in trouble. Offenses ranged from simple summary offenses to felonies of the first degree.

When it was discovered there was a 98 incident and Jerry retired after that, uh huh.. We got you now Joe, you found out about the 98 incident and forced Jerry to retire. You hid that you knew about 98. What oh wait, Joe kept notes and a note was found before the 98 incident that plans were in the works for JS to retire before that incident.

That despicable Joe, in 2001 conspired to hide allegations against Jerry Sandusky…. Oh wait….Interview with state attorneys Frank Fina and Joe McGettigan, who prosecuted the child sexual abuse case against Jerry Sandusky. Asked whether Paterno was part of the "conspiracy to conceal," Fina said this."I do not. And -- and I -- I'm viewing this strictly on the evidence, not any kind of fealty to anybody. I did not find that evidence."

Penn State coach Paterno praised by Attorney General for acting appropriately in reporting Jerry Sandusky sex abuse suspicions

Based on the Feb. 2, 2012 subpoena directed at PSU by the US DOJ, Paterno was not a target or even mentioned. Nor did any of the information requested pertain to Paterno.

From the NCAA itself, Joe Paterno did what is required of reporting possible sexual assault.

Someone this despicable was not respected in the college football world, right and was all about winning above all else, right. Oh wait.

Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno has been named the winner of the 2011 NCAA President’s Gerald R. Ford Award.

“I am honored to present this award to coach Paterno,” Emmert said. “His ‘total-person’ approach to student-athletes, emphasizing academics and personal accountability is a terrific example of everything the NCAA stands for. Coach Paterno has distinguished himself to the world by his wins on the field, but he has endeared himself to thousands of student-athletes who have learned through his leadership that success in the classroom and in life is the greatest accomplishment.

"For me, Coach Paterno is the definitive role model of what it means to be a college coach."

Paterno’s program emphasizes academics as a constant companion to athletics. For the third consecutive year, Penn State led all FBS teams in first-team ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-American selections. He is known for requiring his student-athletes to attend class, devote adequate time to their studies and graduate. Under his leadership, Penn State football has an 84 percent graduation rate.

A five-time National Coach of the Year, Paterno began his career at Penn State during the Truman administration and has coached through 12 presidential terms. During Paterno’s tenure, his teams have produced 16 Hall of Fame Scholar-Athletes, 47 ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and 18 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Penn State has had at least one Academic All-American in each of the past nine years, with 13 first-team honorees during the last four years.

In 1998 Paterno; his wife, Sue; and their five children announced a $3.5 million contribution to Penn State. The gift endows faculty positions and scholarships in the College of Liberal Arts, the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and the University Libraries. It also supported two building projects, the interfaith spiritual center and the Penn State All-Sports Museum. The Paternos have also made a $1 million contribution to the Mount Nittany Medical Center, supporting an expansion of Centre County’s primary health facility. They have been active in the Special Olympics and in 2008 were inducted into the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Hall of Fame. Even Paterno’s iconic glasses have made a difference. In 2010 an autographed pair pulled in $9,000 to benefit Penn State Public Broadcasting.

According to the NCAA in 2011, there are 17 schools with major athletic departments (whose football teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision) that have never been found guilty of any major violation in any sport since 1953, when the NCAA began tracking rule violations. That's about 14% of the total. The bulk of these schools (13) are programs like Air Force, Alabama-Birmingham, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Florida Atlantic and Kent State that play in second-tier conferences where the pressure, the scrutiny, the level of recruiting and the expectations are smaller. There are only four athletic programs from major conferences on the list. They are Boston College, Northwestern, Penn State and Stanford.

So to those of you who think these allegations are true, answer this, if Joe Paterno was all about winning, to get an advantage why didn’t Joe do what the most obvious thing for major college football programs do to win, why didn’t he cheat? Someone so despicable would obviously cheat right?

Been away doing some things not unrelated to the main questions here

which we have struggled with for almost 5 years. Have not read all that much here, but wanted to stop in to say that better days are coming. Now, for example, some in the media are asking the questions many of us have been asking for so long:

"How could the BOT have paid out this much of the University's money with so little vetting of the claims?"

"Hasn't the BOT hamstrung everyone by spending this much money without vetting the claims?"

"Did they think nobody would ever see the records upon which they decided to pay?"

"How can the BOT have gotten PSU in the position where it paid $100 million +++ on the basis that the Freeh Report was true, and STILL be facing the effects of the Spanier vs. Freeh lawsuit, the premise of which is that the Freeh Report is false?" Remember, we indemnified Freeh.

"How can our coffers, whatever you think, possibly be subject to hits from claimants premised upon the 1)truth and 2)falsity of the same report?"

"How bad at governance do you have to be to pay 8 million dollars for one report that makes you liable both if it is true and if it is not?"

Patience, friends. There are some answers. Not sure any of them will get our money back, but someday the nonsensical nature of what the BOT did with Louis Freeh will be plain to even the most ignorant and blinded of our fellow citizens. I feel more certain of that now than ever before.

Good news about my little goalie.

Some of you know that my 11 year old daughter loves playing goalie for field hockey. Last night she was invited to play for the high-school team. She was very nervous the first game and lost 5-0. She gave up 2 bad goals from what she said.

The next 3 games she had a shutout, gave up 3 goals in a loss, and then gave up 5 in a 5-3 loss.

Tonight she played 3 games against Jr high teams and she shutout all 3 teams. She had about 25 saves, but I don't know how they count them.

I just wanted to add a little levity to the board. I hope all of you are well.

If there is any "good" in today's news

Its that both Tom Bradley and Greg Schiano were named as also having "witnessed" or "been told" of abuse.

These two, unlike Joe, are still alive and able to defend themselves. In theory, a very strong, and public refuting of these incredibly false allegations might help.

Or they won't say anything, both UCLA and Ohio State throw them under the bus and we are all worse off. What do I know?

Bradley Statement to Deadspin

Update (3:08 p.m.): A representative of Tom Bradley sends along the following statement:

“At no time did Tom Bradley ever witness any inappropriate behavior. Nor did he have any knowledge of alleged incidents in the 80’s and 90’s. He has consistently testified as such. Any assertions to the contrary are false. When he became aware of the 2001 incident it had already been reported to the University administration years earlier.”

You head is going to explode; Seems Penn State is a subsidary of the Pa Manufacturers Association

In the 1990's the Pennsylvania Manufacturers Association stacked the deck and took over control of the PSU BoT. By 2002, they re-wrote the bylaws ensuring their control of the school.

This article explaining how it all happened
, from 2002, was first linked by JimmyW in a prior thread but it is so shocking I thought it deserved its own thread. There is a lot of maddening stuff in it but this is a critical passage;

According to Paula Ammerman, Associate Secretary of the Board and Director of the Penn State Trustees’ office in Old Main, the university determines the qualification of each industrial society or association. Letters are sent to the acting secretary of each qualifying organization, which allows them to then nominate three delegates per county chapter. Ammerman could not provide an exact figure at the time, but estimated that the number of qualifying organizations was over 150 throughout Pennsylvania.
In instances where more than one society or association exists in a particular county, the nominated delegates from those societies must caucus and elect three delegates amongst themselves to represent their county.
Out of 150 qualifying societies and organizations, PMA Capital sends almost all of the delegates. Out of 65 delegates registered in the 1998 industrial election, 60 were registered as PMA delegates.......

.........
Horst talked with dozens of delegates at the 1996 election and discovered that every delegate he spoke with had been recruited from the streets and retirement communities of Centre County – an obvious violation of the 3-delegate-per-county allowance.
One delegate he spoke to was a resident of State College, the spouse of an elected State College official, yet she voted as a Clinton county PMA delegate.
“After the election, she asked me what the letters PMA stood for,” Horst recalled.

This is where it all started. The PMA rigged the BoT elections to get their own people in charge and now we are stuck with total corruption. The PMA represents huge manufacturers along with powerful bankers and financiers. And they all have major political influence.

Footnote; The article poorly explains the PMA. It is one of dozens of trade associations in Harrisburg that promote various industries There are such trade groups for just about everything from autos to coal miners to zoos. One of their primary functions is to monitor all proposed laws and regulations and lobby on behalf of their members. The PMA would consist of manufacturers and all related businesses like banks, financiers, suppliers, and retailers of manufactured goods like automobiles. That would include companies like US Steel, GE, Mellon Bank, Merck, and more.

The article talks alot about PMA Capital, which is the insurance division of PMA. During the '70s and '80s workmen's comp and insurance became huge issues for the businesses across Pa and the country. In response to member's needs, many of these trade associations formed for-profit subsidiaries to offer insurance to it members where members paid in annual rates and the subsidiary insured them, in affect they became self-insured. PMA Capital became very wealthy and very powerful.

Closing quote just to piss you off some more;

In the 1998 industrial trustee election, Horst discovered that a PMA insurance branch located in Blue Bell, PA served as headquarters for the “Penn State Project.” The project coordinated PMA Capital employees who were provided delegate credentials and accommodations in State College for the weekend of the election.

Besides the investigation in 1996, calls for reform have largely gone unanswered. After persistent inquiries from Robert Horst, former Chairman Junker eventually replied: “I will not respond again to further correspondence from you on this subject.”
Old Main has maintained silence on the matter as well. Officials declined an invitation to respond to Horst’s March 17th CDT editorial. Likewise, Penn State spokesman, Tyson Kendig, declined an invitation from Voices to comment on the specific allegations, but maintained that, “Penn State’s trustee election process is held up as a model for universities across the country.”

FC: Hershey board still living large

LINK: Still running up big bills

"It looks from a distance like the [Hershey Trust] needs a real housecleaning in the board room," said Randall Roth, a trust law expert at the University of Hawaii's William S. Richardson School of Law.

Roth, a national expert on trust law, said some Hershey directors seem to be treating the trust fund for poor children as a "cookie jar" for their own benefit.

NAH.

Check this out:

The highest-paid were Philadelphia-area money manager James Nevels, who received $1.7 million over the last three years, and Robert Cavanaugh, a former trust board chairman and a Los Angeles resident, who earned slightly more than $1 million.

I guess the money managing is just gravy when you have a board position that pays $567,000 per year.

OT: Water Heater Took A Crap/New One?

Our house is only about 2 years old, and as such, so is the water heater (we're the first to live there). Yesterday evening, I discovered that the water heater crapped out.

It's an AO Smith Promax 40gal gas water heater, and has a 6-year parts warranty. Several in the neighborhood have had the same issue that I'm having, and several have spent in upwards of $600 in labor costs despite having parts covered under warranty.

It's throwing an error LED group indicating an ignition/flame failure. It tries to ignite 3 times as per its safety settings but then shuts off and throws the code. Booklet says to power cycle, and have done this 2-3 times to no avail. I can see it trying to ignite--there is definitely a flame--but it never kicks on.

This happened all of a sudden and was fine yesterday AM. There's been no leakage or other problems.

Long story short, but plumber is on the way.

My question is.....there's no way in hell I'm spending $500 in labor to fix it. I'd rather buy a new one, preferably non-AO Smith if their stuff is this shitty and quits after 2 years.

Does anyone have any experience with tankless gas hybrid water heaters or tankless gas ones? I can't see getting a plain tankless gas because of the drawbacks--wife and I take showers at the same time in separate bathrooms, and it's not uncommon to have dishwasher/shower running at the same time.

So, the tankless hybrid intrigues me. Does anyone have any experience or insight as to what the installed cost is?

Tips/tricks and other advice is appreciated.

Naming names. What happened?

Tom Winter, who wrote the piece about the 6 assistant coaches who may have witnessed JSs actions, responded to a BWI poster chrism1965 with the following:

"I think you'll see in the coming days even more of our reporting that will name names and make this issue even more clear."

"in the coming days" generally means within a week. It's now been over two weeks since he promised a follow-up with more details.

Has he produced that follow-up? Has anyone in the MSM called him on it?

Here's the thread:
